played mid-morning Sat Jan 16. The course is in great shape. The greens are very slick right now - gear down and stay below the hole! The rough is very lush as well, so keep an eye on those tee balls because it'll be hard to find your ball in certain spots.

played fri morning Nov 5. The course is back to its usual good condition. Things aren't A+ yet, but it is getting there fast. 2nd stage of Tour qualifying is around the corner and the pros will see a great course.

played morning of Oct 22. The course was in surprisingly good shape considering it's football season, and the greens in particular were in terrific condition. They were smooth and fast. The fairways were in very good condition as well. They are re-doing many tee boxes, but their condition shouldn't affect your play.

Played morning of Oct 24. The course is in fantastic shape. The greens are rolling very, very fast, and the entire course is playing hard and fast. Beware, however, as the rough is high and tough. You will need to watch your ball very carefully off the tee as the rough just swallows up the ball. The bunkers still lack sand, but other than that, everything else is in top shape.

Played the morning of Oct 2. This was my first trip back in here in nearly 6 months, and today, we weren't disappointed. The course was in fantastic shape. It is well groomed, and since it appears that even more scrub has been cut back, the course appears more wide open. The ground and greens are VERY hard, so adjust your game accordingly. I was curious about the changes the new owner would make, and I did notice a few. First, a number of bunkers have been filled; I see pros and cons, but ultimately, they never could keep any sand in them and perhaps fewer bunkers will speed up play. Second, the range maintenance appears deferred. Third, there seems to be fewer staff present to assist customers. Thankfully, Starter "Keith" still is there - he's a good guy.

played afternoon of Oct 16. Considering it's football season, the fairways, tee boxes, and bunkers were in much better shape than I would have guessed. It was very playable. The only significant problem is the greens. They still are bumpy and full of holes, although there appears to be some healing. I know there always are a lot of complaints about Brookside, but the facility does have the best beverage cart girl in SoCal (Heidi) and the marshals did a great job today being of service to me.

played morning of Oct 17. They're done w the overseed and aeration, but the course is in terrible shape. They're supposedly getting it ready for QSchool in mid-Nov, but right now, I can't see it all. I would strongly recommend avoiding this facility for at least 2-3 more weeks. The tee boxes are hairy as hell, the fairways are like the first cut of rough, and the rough in many areas is 5+ inches high. The greens on the front 9 are slow and bumpy, and many of the bunkers don't have any sand. Plus, there's a temp green on one of the holes. This always has been one of the best maintained courses in SoCal, but right now, it is pitiful. If you do choose to play out here, stock up on refreshments for your cart because there is no beverage cart service. It was a beautiful day, so that was a plus, but the course conditioning was just awful.

played morning of Aug 29 2009. I haven't played here in a long time, but came away impressed today w the superb tee to green conditioning. The course looks great and plays great. The' greens are maturing; their holding shots better, although they're not as quick as they once were. The bunkers here are terrific too; accelerate through the shot, because the heavy sand will punish any decel. This course is a bargain, and may be the best conditioned course I've seen this year. My only complaints would be the disgusting aroma from the nearby mushroom farm and the pace of play - 5hrs.

Played super twilight on 8-28-09. I haven't played here in a while, and was curious to see the course conditions. As expected for Aug, there were some brown patches in the fairways, but for the most part, they were fine. The rough wasn't too high, and most of the tee boxes were fine as well. I noticed that some of the bunkers need sand; a couple of times the bounce on my sand wedge just rammed the hard dirt below. The greens were pretty quick, fairly smooth, but splotchy with fungus in some areas. Now that football season is here, I'll take my Brookside break until late Jan.

played afternoon of 8-11-09. My virgin round on this track, and it was a mixed bag. The Good: the service is top notch, and playing next to a beautiful ocean and beach is unbeatable (especially since there were a lot of nice sights on the beach...if you know what I mean). The Bad: because the property isn't very large, and really is just the side of a big hill, the routing isn't very good. A lot of short par 4s, a lot of doglegs and a number of blind shots. Plus, there are 6 holes where you can't take the golf cart out onto the fairway, so the flow is affected - and it isn't a walkers' course either. The Ugly: the conditioning. For the price, one would expect first rate conditioning. Tee boxes were a little shaggy, and the greens weren't smooth either. They rolled on the medium fast side and there were a number of ballmarks. Conclusion: The whole St Regis Resort vibe is very, very nice, but the golf experience is lacking. There are much better tracks for the money in SoCal, but this is a good place to have a drink on the patio.

Played early morning Jul 18. I hadn't played a full 18 on this course in over 15 yrs, so I was looking forward to playing it again. The course is in above average condition, and for the $28 prime time weekend walking rate, I'd say it was a bargain. The greens were medium fast and smooth; they were relatively free of ballmarks and were much better than I remembered. There were some brown patches in some of the fairways, but it wasn't a major annoyance at all. The front 9 is flat and uninspiring, but the back 9 plays like a different course. The back has significant elevation changes and is a bear to walk on a hot day. While it is a short course, it plays longer and the slope rating should be much higher than it is. There is a lot more trouble out there than the course rating suggests. The grill is small, but the prices are incredibly reasonable.

Played afternoon of Jul17. The course was in average condition, although the greens were just fine. I didn't expect superior conditions anyway as summer is taking its toll...as it should. The course plays fine though, and for $28 bucks to walk at twilight, it was a fine time. Expect the fairways to be a little hard - your ball will roll further, so club accordingly.
