On a day when everywhere else was sunny and warm, Los Verdes was cold, windy, and foggy. Never saw even a glimmer of sun until I left the course, and drove into a beautiful sparking day. (It was so cold and overcast, it felt like it was evening for the entire round even though we tee'd off at 10:30am. The greens were the best part of the course, very nice. The fairways were lousey, thin and patchy, always leaving a bad lie no matter where in the fairway the ball came to rest. (Makes for some difficult shot making from those lies) I really like this course, despite the incredible slow pace of play, but when you can't even see the ocean once in 5+ hours due to the fog and your hands are numb from the cold, it makes what could have been a beautiful day into a struggle to endure.

Overall, yes, the course is in okay shape for LV, but the greens are begining to take on that bumpy 'brocolli' look that comes around during cooler temps. Make an extra effort to read them properly or a three putt awaits as they are not rolling very true. Hopefully, some rain or other weather changes may help but I don't know its cause or remedy. Poa greens: we've just learned to live with it. Of course, this tends to slow play just a bit more on a course which is pitifully slow already.

Played Los Verdes on 19 Nov. Slow play as usual (5 hours and 20 minutes) but the course is in very good condition. I know it will be slow play and I plan for it and the game goes very well. Beautiful weather, golf at 75 degrees in Nov. Why go to Hawaii? The tee boxes were great, the fairways a little thin, the bunkers were good, the greens were fast and as usual hard to read, even if you know the butts are going toward the ocean. Great staff and great place to play. Did I mention the price is right? So plan on slow play and you wil enjoy the course very much.

Played today with Swing18, Paisano and Pbryce.... Thanks for coming out guys.. it was fun. Weather was really strange, Hot and very dry for this time of the year. Greens are in really good shape. They do roll true. Fairways a little faded but very playable. Tee boxes flat with very few dips. Great place to play during the week but weekend very long round. Tee time was for 12:04. Finished 17 in 5 hours. Pace was slow and we waited on every hole. Wish we had at least another 30 minutes of light but not in the cards this round. Best advise for this course is to play EARLY. Tee times around 7am - 9am will get you done and ready for rest of the day. Teeing off when we did... wowzers.. jailtime in a long samba line that never ends.

Played 11/15 @ a bit after noon. Course is in great shape and scenery is amazing. Only problem is the pace. Took about 5 hours to finish, and we weren't able to finish the last hole due to low light. There are plenty of 5 somes playing which makes a good wait at each and every hole.

This is an unbelievable course for the money. We started about a half hour late because of a tournament I was told. Other than the slow playing time, I think because of the greens, it is a great course. Lots of challenge for your dollar. There were some low spots in the fairways that were a little muddy but no other course issues. Any putts towards the ocean on a down slope can easily roll 6 feet (or more) past the hole. Great greens, good fairways, and an ocean veiw... Very nice

When there were 4 groups waiting on the tee box at #5, I called the clubhouse about the ridiculously slow play, there was no marshal on the course. Why have a snack cart if you don't send it out on the course? The course needs to be taken away from American Golf and run by someone with a clue. Teed off at 1:30, when the sun went down at 6:30 we had played 14 holes.....shameful!

Haven't played this course in a couple of months. Played it Wednesday 1 Oct. It is in better condition than the last time I played it. Still some maintenance going on (did not hinder our play) but it looks like the irrigation project is done. The greens are in great shape. Very fast and you have to think about your shot due to the slopes and ocean influence. The fairways are in better shape then in quite awhile. Tee's and bunkers are good. Overall a good day of golf. Still very slow but not as bad as some days. Very hot and limited water on the course, not good. At 1:00 the water station on tee 7, both water buckets, were empty. No beverage cart.

I played on Mon 9/29 around 12:40 and finished in 5 hours so I guess I got lucky. It's been almost 4 years since I made the trip up the hill. The greens were punched on half the green and the other half was smooth. Smooth side was running very fast. Give it another 1-2 months before all the cart path is completed and the greens will be perfect. The view is awesome and for $23 to walk on a weekday, you can't beat it. The only complaint was the greenside bunkers have too much sand. I'm used to muni with little or no sand so I was strugglin LOL...

I hear you, melnick. It is what it is. Slowest play in the west ... I walked on yesterday (Monday), took a hour to get on (teed off at 9AM) and the round was 5 hours. Maintenance and construction all over (cart path repair), greens were aerated (they're doing half of every green which is actually not a bad idea), and there is still much work to be done. But ya know, the course was not in THAT bad of shape and I played with some real nice people. I guess I'm saying it's all what you make of it. I guess the buck you lost was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I live adjacent to the course - haven't played it for 3 years and don't intend on going back. Conditions, even for an LA County course are awful. Tee boxes have virtually not grass, fairways contain many types of grass and greens are very bumpy - surprisingly since they are also very, very soft. The staff has no training in golf sourse etiquette. They never stop their mowers when you are taking a shot and drive right through the fairway when you are on the tee. They added a low budget GPS to the carts and if you don't want to use it you 'cancel' it at the beginning of the 4th hole and you are supposed to get $1 back. I did this since I have a laser finder but at the pro shop they claimed that I continued to used it. Big argument ensued over the $1. Oh, did I mention - round took 5 3/4 hours after a 1 1/2 wait on the waiting list. This on a Monday morning. The views were excellent but if I wanted views I would have walked along the PV cliffs.

I think Los Verdes is one of the nicest golf courses the county offers. They just finished a major irrigation upgrade. I was told by the superintendent that the county will be upgrading one course a year. Los Verdes was the first with the new sprinkler system along with a pricey computer (controls watering levels) that goes with it. The course and it's players a reaped the benefits. It's lush and green and the old dry spots are going away. The fairways that used to be thin, have grass on them now. The greens are doing great as well. The greenskeeper there has done a fantastic job. I've played this course the last 15 years and it truly has never looked better. The sand is tough there. I play in the morning during the week and sometimes they haven't been raked when we are out there. Some are soft and some are hard. They plan to grind the over-grown tree roots and fix the tee-boxes in the next phase. Over-all, they have done a fantastic job.
Now playing the course. First, let's just start by saying DO NOT play on the weekends there. It is loaded and extremely slow. If you can, play during the week. Come out early and put your name on the waiting list. I'd suggest 5:30-5:45 a.m. You'll be out in less then an hour. Make a tee-time for the following week then. There is some course knowledge needed. The greens are tricky. Sometimes you think you're putting uphill and it ends up you're downhill...and vice versa. The greens usually break towards the water...keep that in mind when reading the break. When the greens are at their normal speed...they run between an 8 and a 9. Spend sometime on the practice green. This will help immensely. Good luck and enjoy one of California's best public golf courses with oceans views.

Played Los Verdes in a Saturday tournament held by my college fraternity alumni group (LA and OC alumni chapters of Sigma Chi) Well-planned tournament and great to see all of the guys.

The "good": Course is in remarkably good shape compared to the last time I played here. Fairways were great, greens rolled true and were consistent. And consistently GOOD! Great views. Well designed. Lots of elevation changes and a true test of golf.

The "bad": Our first group off the tee was 15-minutes late, I should have known what was coming up.

The "ugly": There are fivesomes of walkers all over in front of us. After the full half-hour wait at the second tee, we just laughed and joined-up with the foursome in front of us and (yes!) made an "eight-some". We STILL had to wait on just about every shot for the almost FOUR HOUR FRONT SIDE.

The "marshall" said to us: "Hey...you can't play as an "8-some"!!

Our answer: "Why not?? Are we falling behind??"

The answer was clear and he said: "Well...you have a point there!"

If I'm lyin', I'm dyin'! We played as an eight-some until the 10th hole where we decided to start drinking heavily.

Total time to play 18-holes? Six-hours and twenty-minutes.

You have been warned. This is the slowest golf course I have ever played in my LIFE.

Thank God the company was good and all eight of us fraternity brothers got along so well.

N.B. to Los Verdes management....seriously, dudes....that was ridiculous. Do something!

Gotta say LV is coming back due to the irrigation system improvements. All contruction is done ... the range is next, whenever that might happen, who knows. The fairways are improving and look better than ever. Greens have always been great but now they're cutting them a little shorter and they can be quick, at least for LV.

Still the slowest playing course in SoCal, so stay away if you like fast rounds. I might start playing here again more often.

Expect more than 6 (yes, Six) hours of playing time on weekends. Bring enough patient to play at this course. No Marshalls at all to control the speed of players without any knowledge of golf course manner. Many players don't know how to wave the next group to play at Par 3 holes. It was too bad that course condition was so good!

teed off at 6am today. course is exactly the way i remembered it 3 years ago - everything breaks towards the ocean.

it's a typical muni where the teeboxes are slightly unlevel and have divot holes around them. The greens roll pretty well but people aren't fixing their ball marks! the fairways are hit or miss; i'd have to say they're slightly on the thin side.

the view was awesome but the course wasn't very challenging; pretty simple setup of just hit straight.

Just moved out here and played Los Verdes on 5/16. There are many ways to look at this course. If you are looking to play serious golf and like a steady pace of play then this might not be your place. Backups and 5somes made pace very slow. If you are looking for golf at a bargain rate coupled with the most gorgeous surroundings ever no matter how slow play is this is your place. The course was in very nice shape and greens were fast and breaks difficult to read. The mixture of holes is nice and the course while not long is quite challenging. The carts have GPS in them and the pro shop is nice. For me, this is great since its 5 min away from where I live and I can be happy just looking at the ocean and hitting an occasional shot. The back nine views are truly out of this world and coming from the east coast as I did, you just never see anything like this and for 29 bucks how the heck can you get mad for a little delay here and there.

Played course on march 16 in a tournament. Course played very slow. Started at 12, finished at 6:15. The repairs are coming in nicely, but I can not believe how hard the greens are rolling. Barely tapped a putt from 5 feet on number 15 and the putt rolled 10 feet by. The wind is a major factor on the course. I would say the course can be very nice if the play speeds up and the irrigation gets fixed. The tee boxes were good, fairways- good, greens- very fast on some. I am a 6.1 and shot an 83. Overall a tough day when you have to hit and wait twenty minutes per shot.

Good, golly, guys ... it's been 6 months since I made a comment on LV so I thought I'd give you the straight poop. The good: irrigation is completed on the back nine and, believe it or not, it actually looks like a golf course again. Some unusal selections of sod (Bermuda) but, hey, better than bare dirt. Bad: The front nine is still under construction and so it's still a complete mess (muddy) but should be done sometime in March. It may take until summer to come back to playable conditions, but that's what it is: an AmerGolf run muni ... take it for what it's worth. d%mn , they need to repair the tee boxes something awful, and the driving range blows ... at least the poa greens are consistent and the beer is cold.

Still under construction, but playable. The fairways in many areas are muddy and/or sodded. The greens were alright at least. I could see this place being favorite if the course was in better shape with the nice views. Pace of play was slow, but I guess it's that way there all the time. The layout was decent. Only few holes had severe dogleg/blind shot type tee shots. You will definately play better the second time around.

For some reason they sanded the greens again today for the third time in the last month??? Course is still very torn up from the new irrigation system that is being installed. Hopefully it will be worth it in the long term. I would wait at least 3 or four months for the course to recover!!

Normally I would say Los Verdes is a very good course to play if you can get a decent tee time but things have changed over the past 10 years. This course is getting worse and worse over time, I don't know if it's poor management or cut backs on the maintenance. The overall course is in terrible condition except for the greens which are a little bumpy from the punch marks but they are very green and healthy. The views of the ocean and surrounding area are beautiful, Catalina was crystal clear but as much as I like a great view it's really all about the golf and this definitely wasn't it. This round didn't start off very well so perhaps I'm being a little harsh... we weren't told that it's "cart paths only" until after we'd paid and were actually on the 1st tee... I don't play courses that I can't drive to the ball because of my bad knee. Anyway, I would keep an eye on the ratings for this course to improve before I would play it. I'd rather pay more for a decent course than suffer through another round at Los Verdes... "Thumbs Down" for me!

CARTER - Los Angeles
Played there yesterday 1-2-08 and after reading a couple of reviews here about the awful conditions, i should have stayed away from this course. But with spectacular views and a $36 green fee, what could go wrong......

Well, i got what i went for. Spectacular ocean views. This is the poorman's Peeble Beach. You have a view to the ocean on about half the holes. The 15th green alone is worth the price - it a par 4 green that uses the ocean as your background. Reminds me of the famous par 3 course in Peeble (i think 13th hole?).-----

So now for my review. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COURSE until next year when they are finished with their irrigation system. The fairways are all torn up. Temporary tee boxes in the middle of the fairways to accomodate digging equipment and crews working. The sod grass to replace the one's they've taken out are all dried up and very hard. I spoke to the contractor and they are expected to finish construction around April 2008. So i would go back there when everything is settled.-------

Another thing i didn't like about this course was the pace of play. I played on a weekday and it took us 6 hours to finish and we had a 40 minute delay in our tee time cause of the back up. I had a 10 a.m. tee time and the guy i played with had a 10:01 a.m. tee time. I asked the starter why 1 minute apart and he says that they do this cause just in case the the other group doesn't show up that they have another group ready. AND I'M LIKE - ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Why do that? this course would be spectacular if the management changes their policy of over booking. The starter told me that they do overbook just like the airlines. MY GOODNESS. I can't imagine playing here on the weekends. I heard from my playing partner that it sometimes takes them 6.5 to 7 hours to play. They pack everybody in there. We had a 5 some in our group and the group in front of us. THIS IS RIDICULOUS.--------The only thing good about the course that day were the greens.

Please whatever you do... do not play this course... I repeat DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE!!! Is is a waste of your bleeping money! The course is in as bad of conditions a golf course could ever be in. The greens fees should be adjusted to no more than $15/round. Played today and it was unbearably slow and was hitting off of dirt lies all day. Tee boxes look like mine fields. Construction vehicles all over the course. Unruly course workers joy ride up and down the fairways... It is amazing the course is still open. Please heed this advice.

We played twilight on Christmas day. We ended up starting about 1/2 hour than our scheduled tee time. The pace of play was SLOW. We only managed to get in 8 holes before it was too dark to play.

Course is not in great shape. Fairways are all torn up (but covered up) with recent work on the course. There are numerous vehicles on the course. A lot of the fairways were very thin in spots (more dirt than grass). On hole #7, you are hitting off temporary tee box. The tee boxes were mostly torn up from tee shots. Sand in the traps were fair. Greens were in fair condition. We saw a lot of unrepaired ball marks on the greens.

With slow play on the course, we just enjoyed the scenery and watched the sun set in the ocean. Great views of the ocean from the course. Otherwise, it can get too aggravating waiting to hit your next shot. This is not an easy course to play. Greens have a lot of grain to them.

Second half of a double header with Gerdaldq18.. I liked the course, even if it is under going some work. Some of the fairways are being torn up, and their are construction vehicles on a few holes. But the layout is fairly challenging and you can't beat the price. If you like fast greens with plenty of break, and nice views the course is for you. Worth the green fee, but beware it is going to take awhile to finish the round!!

I heard this was the cheap version of Trump for awesome views, too bad it was overcast and after the 9th hole it started to rain. We got to 15th (view would have been spectacular) and called it a day. Tee boxes were fair, some uneven and some barespots. Fairways were pretty much wide but at times thin. Seems like they were working on their irrigation, some dry, bare spots, sod areas and machinery was all over the place. Greens were in great condition, though the rain slowed some holes but they were rolling pretty true. 11th hole was pretty nice with the elevated tee box overlooking the hole and part of the ocean as the backdrop. Would love to come back here on a clearer day and after the maintenance is completed.

I drove up for my annual round at Los Verdes, yesterday. Lots of construction on the course. The first tee had been moved to the bottom of the hill, so the first hole played as a 310 yard par four. The eleventh tee had also been moved to the bottom of the hill, making it a 30-50 yard par three. So, on this day, the course became a par 69. The fairways were mostly hard with lots of thin and bare spots. I think the mens club is playing winter rules. They also were putting a thin layer of sand on the greens, but the greens still putted well and were the best part of the course. I guess they are upgrading the irrigation system, so the course should be fantastic down the road. For the near future, though, there will be a few headaches so give them a call and find out what you're in for before you drive up there.

Played Los Verdes this morning in a public shotgun for $40 which included a $5 voucher for the snack bar. Great time but the fairways were awful. There was hardly any decent grass...mostly bare. Balls took a lot of bad bounces. Greens were fine, but tricky. The weather and the views..awesome. One tee box was under construction.

Teed off at 2:04PM on 9/7 and finished 17 holes before dark. Cost $54 for our twosome with cart(got twilight rates). Since the only other visit here was over 20 years ago, I was very hesitant after reading other reviews here but decided to give it a try.
Overall, It's the most scenic public golf course in So. Cal. Even with slow play and rather poor condition of the fairways, I would strongly recommend golfers play here at least once. My wife was so taken with the view that she wants to go again next week. If you can tolerate 5 1/2 to 6 hr. round, and poor condition of the fairways, you'll be rewarded with a nice scenic golfing outing.

As the previous post says, pretty sad. Played our Club's monthly tournament here Sat 1st tee time was scheduled for 10 am , went off at 10:20. They put in two groups ahead of us, a female 4 some that was slow, then an all male 5 some that was really slow they were at least a hole behind the girls. Tourney is usually 4.5 to 5 hrs, today it was 5.5 hrs.

The course was OK, give it a 5. Tee boxes were OK, some had divotsl The fairways were decent, although many had dry areas and muddy areas. The greens were kind of fast, not too many ball marks (have seen worse). Everything breaks to the ocean, your mind tells you otherwise, but heed my words.

Beverage cart came by to the group ahead of us, we were within a chip shot away then she took off. Came back around when we were on the 16th fairway and passed us up. No water on the course except at the restrooms, holes 4 and 12.

Highlight was the scenery, great vistas and the weather was a balmy 78 or so. Would not go out of my way to play here on my own.

Gad, I hate to say it but these guys are right. I've played here regularly for 10 years and never, ever seen it this bad. Other than the greens which are just fine, well, I think you know what's happening by reading the previous posts. It might not be until 2008 when things can begin to return to normal. Sorry to have spread the bad news but it is what it is. If anything changes, I'll be the first to let everyone know.

It's not run for the hills, its run from the hills. The hill that Los Verdes sits on. PlayedThurs Aug. 16th., and trust me Bad service is not the word. Also the back nine has major construction going on and the 5 temporary tees. Fairways were horrible big mudd track all over the cousre. Really bad. A far cry from it used to be. JUST NOT WORTH IT

You play Los Verdes for the tremendous views -- Not the lousy customer service. Allow me to poopoo the staff on Sunday. I was playing with a group of senior citizens (50+) two were riding; one walking. The riding twosome's cart was down on power by the 14 tee box. They called it in. In fact they used my mobile to TRY to get a replacement. No replacement arrived. In fact those poor gentlemen had to walk 17 and 18 only b/c their cart died on them. Now I am not blaming the starter that answered the phone; nor the non-response from the cart barn of young kids workign there. I am peeved at the fact no one bothered to do ANYTHING! I mean he gave the cart number, the starter said he would send a replacement, in fact our guy gave him the hole we would wait for him with the replacement. Someone should have had the courtesy to get out a replacement. One of the twosome nearly threw out his back as he tried in vain to push the cart up a hill. And there are more than their fair share of hills on that bloody course. Now me, I walked. No biggie but I sure felt sorry for the two that had to shlep their bags for the remainder of the course. As one of them put it, "I don't mind walking so much on a course, in fact I love walking on the course. I ride to conserve my strength so I can play 18 holes." Now if that wasn't a bloody crime I don't know what is.

Ok now for the golf course, greens are great. They run smooth, true, and towards the ocean (downhill). Fairways also in great shape except for 11. Rough is thick but manageable and a bit sparse in spots. Tee boxes has more than their fair share of uneven tees so you may need to adjust your drives. Overall course played slow -- 6 hours. Terrible but the folks in front may have been awestruck by the views on this great day. BTW staff better get a bead on their water dispensers on hole 6. They were completely out. No cart girl and this was a weekend! It was hot around 85F with a cool breeze, and don't tell me I could have held out from taking in any water. I am only glad I brought my own. I mean great golf but lousy facilities and service if you ask me. If you want to play an exceptionally long round or just want plain lousy service well I would recommend Los Verdes. It's a far cry from what it was when this was my HS home course.

First time to play LV,Very challenging layout and Yes ... the greens were hard to read(I read many reviews from here GK and my golfing friends before I went to play). Very difficult to play for first timer and the beginners. You need someone to help you guide this course. Hole#18 was very soggy around last 100 yards and green area. As I said the greens were very hard to read but all those unrepair divots (what a shame ;; ) making some grees very bumpy. Half of the teeing area were very uneven and in bad condition. But like to challenge this course again.
After the round, the starter ask us to pay GPS fee??!! What GPS fee??
Didn't know they charge one buck per player to use GPS even though the GPS was attached in the cart (Bad business, what's next$$$.. score card, pencil, bathroom??!! very cheap golf club) By the way our GPS was not working and I had to tell a starter they should remind us before our tee time. For this time we didn't have to pay that unreasonable extra fees.

Played 7/18. Tried to walk on as a single, took well over an hour, got there at 7:45 did not get out until after 9. Saw a threesome go out around 8:15, when I finally asked about it, was put out right away. Course was in horrible shape, lots of dirt on the fairways and tee boxes, no sand in the traps, took way to long, was only on 15 after 2PM had to walk off. Reminded as to why i never play there, even though it's my closest course, way to overated, views are not worth it.

Well, I've heard from a reliable source that the new irrigation system begins at LV this month, so be prepared. Best to call first but be ready for a few temporary tee boxes and greens ... the project should roll over into 2008 as they will only work a section at a time. Also, no construction on weekends but the GIR areas and temps will still be there. Green fees going up, too, but only a few bucks.

Played this course for the first time after many tries and were not able to get good tee time. The course was as good as what I heard from my friends. The fairways and tee boxes were very good. On many holes, you have to be familiar with how the ball would roll. The GPS were great. It give some tips on how to play the hole. The greens rolls real nice, but were very hard to read even you know the balls will roll towards the ocean. My only regret is that the marine layer blocked much of the ocean. I really did not get to appreciate the beauty of this course. You cannot beat the price. Any place else this course would cost 5 times more.

Played today, got out @ 0804 on time. Took a little over 41/2 hours. Only waited on the par 3's-(No waving up today). Fairways good condition. Greens in very good condition, rolled smooth and fast. Just tough to read as usual-(Always toward the water, right?)

The course is getting over the Winter blues and coming along nicely. The greens were in very good condition. The fairways were thin in various spots. The sand traps need some work. Very slow pace of play.

I can't believe I am writing this, but I've played here for nearly 40 years and this was the first time I ever played here where I did not wait every hole. Not once!! Granted we had a fivesome and a couple of the players in the group are slow, but the group behind us never even caught up to us either. While I do not consider a 4 1/2 hour pace good, for this course on a perfect weather day is incomprehensible. So playing in perfect sunny weather with no wind, no wait, decent conditions. (greens still a bit bumpy from recent punching) for $21.50 is the bargin of the year.

For $33.50 riding you cant beat this course anywhere. Them having GPS sure is nice as well. Extreemly beautiful view. Much better than any (under $100) course in So cal. We Tee'd off right at 8am and finished at 12:30. Pace was great.

Greens were pretty smooth condisering they punched them 2 weeks ago. Still lots of seeds everywhere ont he green slowing them down a lot. Very few ball marks (if any).

Fairways were very nice considering its still winter conditions.

Rough was cut very nice. I would say this is the first place locally that actually had a light rough that wasnt crab grass which was actually cut nicely.

Teeboxes were the only part which i didnt like very much. Lots of them were not level. But divot damage was to a minimum.

Traps were sorta wet. Some were very hard and some were soft.

Overall i really liked this course and will definitely play again if i can get a tee time here, which is very hard to do.

Played 3/18/07 sunday at 1;00 p.m. Of course I did not reserved tee time just a friend of my friend gave him cause his group simply couldn't assist to golf course. We totally appereciated.
Paying just $40 to enjoy golf with nice view, where? only here,LOS VEREDES GOLF COURSE.
Was cloudy & humid day blocking the general view to ocean but today's great surprise was pace of play.Normally weekend's time take more than 5 1/2 even +6hours without exaggeration. But today we finished only 4 hours 45min.Incredible but true.
Tee boxes & faiways lush green offering generally good lie to hit but little bit wet & greens are shaagy but still with tendency of ocean break.
Was really perfect day.

Everyone who's ever played golf in So. Cal knows what it's like at Los Verdes. The starters have no motivation whatsoever to show courtesy or any professionalism whatsoever. Pretty much the only way to make a tee time is to show up at 3 or 4am and get in line. Even then, when you get to be the ninth person on the board, how is it that all the tee times are all taken from 6 am to 10am? They know that their rates can't be beat and people still show up and wait hours trying to get on. If you try to call, they don't bother answering the phones because they have others that they just place on hold to block your calls. I know this because I used to have a buddy that worked there. Bumpy greens, no grass in fairways, skimpy bunkers are constant conditions on that course.

Played the course on Thursday 3/15. Can there be a couple of suggestions to all of you. You must really want to play this course if you get on the waiting list. 1 hour 35 mins for a single to go out. Not only that it might have been longer but, I had to tell the starter that he passed over me on the waiting list. WTF. He claims he needed a two some to complete. If that is the case then he should have added me and another single instead of passing me over.
Now that I got that out of my system.

The course is in good condition. The ball rolled on the fairways and also rolled on the greens. The greens did not hold very many approach shots so come in short. The greens rolled a lil bumpy and slow. Several greens on the course are differently cut in order to play with your minds. At least it seems that way.
All of the uphill putts are slow and the putts towards the water are fast. Uhhmmmm.
The wind did not show up until the later part of the day and she brought her friend cold with her. It helps on some holes, back nine, due to the direction of the wind. however, a very good day indeed.

PS.
Again if you really want to play this course be prepared to spend alot of time on the phone (trying to get a tee time early) or a couple of hours to walk on. It is worth it if you have the time.

Course might have the best views of any course in southern California! That being said, it is less than $30 to play so imagine how crowded it gets. Along with average playing conditions but what do expect for $30. Well worth it if you have the time!!!!!!!

Teed off at about 11am as a walk on single. Everything was pretty normal except that the greens had an unusual "bubble wrap" surface that drove me nuts. I can wrap my little mind around playing a left-edge inside putt right-edge inside because of the ocean break, but when every 2 to 3 foot putt bounces an inch or two in an undisclosed direction its too much for old stickboy. I actually gave myself a couple three footers on the back side. God have mercy on my soul. The greens should be great in a week or so.

If I were to tell someone it takes almost 6 hours to play a course with bare fairways, suspect tees, and patchy rough, i'd be asked why play there? But for $21.50 to play this course.... what a bargin. The greens and traps were fine, everything else, not so good, but you overlook a lot of flaws just to enjoy the views. I know EVERY group is a 5some, but still don't understand why this course plays so slow. (No hazards, trees, etc to slow play) Oh well, it is what it is.

Walked on 11/15. A very enjoyable experience. Back nine is more difficult with three good par 4's on holes 13-15. Pace of play is way too slow, the only real negative. I tee'd off at 12:30 and only got 16 holes in by 5:15PM before it got too dark.

OK, so you want to play at LV on the weekend, eh? Don't want to be on the course for six hours? Pick a number and spend the night in the lot, cuz that's what it takes. Plus, the conditions are not the best right now with lots of bare areas, some right in the middle of the fairways. And who knows when the new irrigation system will be installed. At least the greens hold up fine. I'd just spend the extra $ and play a high end OC or RC course ... plus you get a good nights sleep. Or you can try Trump's extravaganza down the road :-)

Played this course for the first time Sun. 10/15/2006. After hearing a lot of good things about this course, I decided to sacrifice some sleep and woke up the prior Sunday at 4:55am to get a tee time. IT WAS BUSY! at 4:55am and redialed til 5:15am before i got through....my tee time.... 1:15pm. Yup 1:15! I still took it. We actually teed off a little after 1:30. This is 5some city! I never saw a group with less and trust me..I had time to look! We finished 15 with decent light and a California Sunset! It was priceless. Played 16 in the dark and that tooke us 5 hours and 15 minutes. Even with all the slow play the views makes this course absolutely worth playing. With all the time we had available to us we played a little game of..."how much do you think that house is worth?" on every shot. The course is a steal @ $40 with a cart on the weekends, even if you finish only 16 holes. The sunset alone is worth the price to play. Greens have come back perfectly from the aerating. One of the best greens I've played on in the last 6 months. Fairways are typical muni, rough and bunkers likewise. I'm already planning to sacrifice my sleep for a future tee time. Next time hopefully I'll get lucky and I'll get through by 5:05am and get a time with atleast 6 hours of daylight left.

Played on Friday as part of a tournament. We were able to finish the round in about 5 hours. The fairways were bare in spots. The greens are starting to recover nicely from the aeration from a couple of weeks ago. But the views from the 2nd and 15th holes were fantastic. We could see Catalina island from the 15th hole. We would play here more often if it wasn't so so busy.

This was my first time playing the course. I walked on as a single with no wait at all on Tuesday. The course was in decent shape, some bare spots in the fairways. The greens are coming around nicely after the aeration a couple weeks ago. The views along with the ocean breeze make up for any frustration with slow play or your golf game, I loved it.

Booked tee time for Friday at 1:45pm but got on the waiting list at 12:15 and we were called on at 1:00pm. Haven't played this course in 4 years and last time did not finish. I was worried that we would not finish but finished the round in 5 hours flat.

This course is a true TREASURE of southern california and I feel awkward posting this review because thsi course is worth the price for the VIEW in itself.

Sure, they were AERATING the greens but we WILL RETURN when the greens are better. Our round PLUS THE SUNSET at 6:39pm was simply put AMAZING!!

Since its the closest golf course to my house, I usually try to go out for 9 holes whenever I have the opportunity. I rarely play 18 here since it will take a good 6 hours regardless of day, although an early tee time would definitely bring that round time down. conditions here never really change much since the amount of players and rounds here are constant from week to week: good fairways, pretty smooth greens here, very fast putts. tee boxes are uneven for many holes which is unfortunate but still playable. good course to walk though hilly, since the views are nice and the round will be slow regardless.

Had a tee time for 1:16 pm on Thursday. We started about 1:45 pm. Took us about 5 3/4 hours to play. Barely managed to get all 18 holes in. It got real cold, windy and foggy on the back nine. The greens are in great shape. Greens tends to break toward the ocean and have some grain to them. Fairways were very dry or bare in spots or very wet in other spots. Loved the course and layout of the course. Course is a challenge to play.

Played 8/5/06 saturday at 2;15 , reserved at 2;00 just 15minutes of delay ,not bad. Los verdes despite of being muni course of $40 always conserve much better conditions than one expect .Some tee boxes beated up but fairways & greens in medium-high conditions. The only contra of this course is loooong time of pace of play.More than 6 hours of play(it was record for me) even we could not finish the 18 th hole cuz of darkness. The layout help slow play especially back 9 ,#11 par 4 310 yard everybody waitng to get out of green front group's players cuz average golfer could get in 1 on green with driver. after #12 hole par 3 .

I played as a single with a guy from New Mexico and two women, both of whom were GOOD, knew how to play in a cart, and didn't slow us up. The course was typically crowded, and the grounds crew were treating the greens with a wetting agent, which didn't affect play. It was overcast until the back nine. Greens were in wonderful condition.

for the price, probably the best deal in all of CA. golf in this city is now a mandatory 4.5-5+ hrs, weekends are probably longer. If you can accept this (I still have not), this is a nice course to spend a day. You use most of your clubs, have a variety of holes that test your game. A little local knowledge on the greens will definitely save you some strokes (everything breaks to the ocean). Some holes have fantastic views (on a clear day), especially tee box on 11 and approach to 15 (one of my favorites).

Played saturday 5/6/06 at 1;00 p.m.Absolutely worth the green fee.Nice greens(not aerated) medium/fast,smooth,holding well.If they cut shorter gonna be fantastic greens. No complaints about fairways, good shape. You have to say "thank you" to slow play here cuz you have more time to appreciate the tranquille sea view.If you want fast play & spectacular view go to near Trump golf club but you have to support $195-$300.From the 1st tee par 5 dog leg left if you are long & accurate driver hitter passing over green & o.b.zone could try 2 on to green to try at least birdie opportunity & another interesting hole is #11 par 4 305yards downhill,my tee shot was short 5 yards to get on green finished birdie here. And # 15 par 4 dog leg left 'to the sea'green placed on edge of the end of barranca 2nd shot aiming to the sea.During the round I thought the market value of this course as golf course or as terrain. Viva los verdes!!!

Why anyone would play this course is beyond me. Every time I call to see how busy the course is, i'm lied to and told to come on down. ONce I get there, they tell me "oh we're pretty busy it might be a while." This is happened numerous times and I WILL NEVER play there again. The course isn't very well maintained anyways. If it wasn't for the views the place would be a joke. Six hour rounds are normal. If you want to enjoy your day of golf I recommend going somewhere else.

Play time has shown some improvement with better marshaling and a pace of play policy but play early to avoid the 5 hr. round. Greens are still slow and bumpy ... on the plus side, they will hold about anything that lands on them. Polite/professional staff for a muni. I hear a new irrigation system is planned for next year so the patchy fairways should improve. Still a great golf value if that's what you're looking for.

An 85 Degree day and awesome views. The greens were lumpy and bumpy, the fairways were in fair to good condition, the roughs and bunkers were mostly poor. You're paying for the views.

Our foursome had a 1:15pm tee time, I know what your thinking they will never finish, but we did, as we arrived on the 18th green at 7:15 (yes 6 hours) we were treated to a spectacular sun setting on the ocean. We couldn't have for a better ending. This will always be a special course, so relax and enjoy the views and remember you can't ask for anything better at this price.

Played course on Monday (8/29), and while the views were as beautiful as ever, the conditions weren't quite as beautiful. There were a lot of bumpy greens -- I watched my playing partners' putts become airborne on several occasions. There also seemed to be a lot more beige on the fairways than I've remembered there, possibly a testament to August's elevated temperatures and not enough watering to compensate. Pace of play wasn't as bad as some rounds I've played there, so that was one positive.

Beautiful day, 8/22 after the marine layer subsided. Course in pretty good shape, greens fast. Only complaint is some of the pin placements were in hideous positions.

I have played this course a number of times in the past but it has been awhile and I was really impressed with the conditions, considering it is a county course. I feel for the price, it really is one of the best bargains in SoCal. Challenging, with some difficult doglegs and wind-influenced holes. We tee'ed off at 4:30pm and the wind started to howl on the back nine. A par 3, 137 yarder, got knocked down off the tee for all of us. Everyone laid up, even one group member who hit a wood! But even still, this course is in great shape with difficult ruff and hard-to-read greens, for a muni.

Played here on Tuesday afternoon. Teed off a little after 3pm and didn't finish until well after 8:30 pm due to the fact that every group in front and behind us played as 5-somes. On one par 3 (I believe the 8th hole), there were 20 people on the hole at one time. Simply unbelievable. The pro shop has no shame. Anyway, I would readily submit this golf course as having the worst golfers of any regulation course; describing these players as hackers would be generous. The course is also marshall-free.

The course itself is looking good; the bunkers have good, fluffy sand that doesn't bury. The greens are nice, a little soft perhaps, but get very bumpy later in the day. The wind off the ocean was brutal, but made the course more challenging.

Played twilight on father's day with the 50% discount. What a treat! Course condition is the best I've ever seen since I started playing here, probably because of all the rain we got. Wow the greens were fast, it was really US open week. Overall it was great playing, though pace here is always slow.

One of the truly great pieces of SoCal golfing real estate. Too bad it's an L.A. County course and run by American Golf. What a waste of a fine layout and tremendous views. Course is in marginal shape at best, greens are bumpy and slow....(perhaps they had been recently drilled and sanded....that is a possibility) Fairways were far from "lush" - kind of thin and weedy. Views of the Pacific are great - not qute "Pebble Beach" - but still very pretty. If you like the "view" of three fivesomes backed-up in front of you on every hole, then Los Verdes is for you. My friend had a gift certificate and treated us to the round. I gotta say, even for free, it's just not worth it!

Fine course, and a great value, if you have much more time than money. If it doesn't kill you to spend $50 or more, skip this one. If it does kill you, then bring something to do while you wait on every single hole, especially the first 5. First 9 on a Thursday afternoon was finished in 3 hours. Back played relatively fast in just under 2 1/2.

The best golf value in all of Southern California! Ocean view golf for 40$? Who would complain. Wide open fairways which slope towards the ocean. Many elevated greens which also play optical tricks with golfer's. Only problem is golfer's need a camper to get teetimes there.

Consistantly maintained public muni course with fantastic ocean views. Well worth the price but slow play (5-somes) makes it a grind. Getting a weekend tee time is very competitive.

Played Sat, 1/8. Decided to go out and see if I could play and dodge raindrops at the same time. Got to the course at about 8 am, and was sent off immediately as a single. Because this course is usually so jammed, I really only try playing it during inclement weather - usually only a few of us diehard knuckleheads willing to deal w/ the conditions. One benefit of all the sidehill lies on this course, is that it drains pretty well. Finished nine holes in less than two hours, and called it after that as I caught up to a couple foursomes in front of me. Fairways were pretty beaten up, but the greens were pretty smooth, and despite all the rain, were running fairly quick.

This used to be my home course. The views are magnificent and the holes fun and somewhat challenging. The challenge comes in at negotiating slanted lies on just about every hole. It can get annoying but did I mention the view? The two major reasons I don't like or recommend this course any longer is that they have become greedy with Tournament play. I seem to remember just a couple of years ago when signs posted no weekend tournament play. This course seems to go out of its way to book them and book them early on both saturday and sundays. Like it wasn't bad enough you had wait in the parking lot at 2:30am just to get a decent tee time for the following week! The second major complaint is mostly one of preference. The greens at this course have always been the single most challenging feature. People tell you that they break towards the ocean which is a riot since the course is on a peninsula. If the greens were not tricky enough they got a new greenskeeper who decided to practically double the speed on them. I'm serious. It seems as though you exhale on the ball and it rolls forever. Bad call. The bottom line is always gonna be that a course with this kind of view for $28 is a steal but if you want better and more enjoyable golf look elsewhere.

Played the day after the big rains on Oct. 27th.....the course was in wonderful shape.....smooth fast greens and fairways relatively well drained. But best of all was the pace of play. Finished 18 holes in 4hr 15min. I have never played any quicker than 5 1/2 - 6 hrs. Too bad it could not always be that quick. Also walked on with no waiting list! Definitely one of the best public courses around.........I have not played here in several yrs mostly due to the slow play. From now on.....I might be playing here more often....especially after the rains when everyone wants to not go out and golf!

Played on October 16...greens good...the rest of the golf course looked like the mowers are broken...kikuyu grass around greens very thick and not maintained properly...rounds are always slow but could improve if course was cut at same height to save time looking for lost balls...probably one of the quietest golf courses in LA County...

Agree with 1scgolfer. This course did not live up to expectations, except for the spectacular views. The greens were good but everything else was mediocre at best including the tee boxes which had very few level spots if any. I'd rather play Eldorado or Rec Park which are lot closer to home

I used to play here 15+ times a year, but since moving to Coto de Caza, I don't have a chance to play here very often. Nothing has change! Over 5 1/2 hours to play!!! The greens were recently punched, so they were not as good as I'd hoped for, but the fairways were decent, as was the rough and traps. I really love this course, but when you factor in how hard it is to get a tee time and how long it takes to play a round, it will probably be another year or two before I return.

Played there 9AM on 9/26 Sunday. This golf course has very nice view. The speed was pretty good on a Sunday, we finished in 5 1/2 hours, same everywhere in county course. The fairways have a lot of yellow spots and it's not maintained in excellent way. Greens are hard to read though, most of them break to ocean no matter what slope it has! Overall, good course to play. Will come back again if I can get morning tee time again.

This course rocks. Very beautiful views of the ocean on nearly every hole, and large sloping greens that'll punish you/reward you accordingly. One thing is that it's REALLY slow. So if you're expecting a 4 hour round, you might want to look elsewhere.

Played Mon. 8/2/04 A very fun course for the money. Only problems: fairways have many bare spots, as I have seen them much better. The greens were very slow and soft making it easy to stick anything on the green (I do mean anything)and they were bumpier than I have played in the past. Oh Yeah a little note If You think your stuck behind a group that's playing slow make sure it's not the group in front of them patience is key. example if there's a group just getting on the green ang a group on the next tee box you might be waiting some right?

Played 7/18 at 6:12 in the morning. The greens have been better but I cannot complain. They're better than most County courses. Fairways are a little sparce and some of the tee boxes are in need of repair. It doesn't help when the blues are at the very back of #12 so you are teeing on an up slope. All this does is creates a situation where a hacker can gouge out big divots. This is probably the worst tee box too. The solution is to fix the tee box, not find another area to ruin. My partner and I won our match so it's not that I was unhappy. I just know how beautiful this course can be and I'd like to see it back in the pristene conditions it used to be.

I like the layout of this golf course and the mild weather is always welcome in the summer along with the ocean views. Los Verdes used to be known for their lightning fast greens but they were pretty tame Sunday morning. Could have used a mow. Some fairways run like Britain since the ground just can't grow much grass. Seems to be getting worse every year. However I can not blame course conditions for the way I played and I knew 1scgolfer could not play like a dog THREE weeks in a row. How about proof-reading your feedback, knucklehead.

Wow!! Great course for the buck. Today the forcast called for more sun than clouds. No sun at all and a little misty at times was the real forcast. Nice and cool. Great ocean views. The greens were in good shape but a little slow because of the weather. We started at 10:45 and ended at 4:45. It has been a while since I played a 6 hour round of golf but those of us who use golf as an escape from the real world do not mind. Great starters very willing to help. We did not have a tee time and waited about 15 min. to get on. Lucky timing I am told. Can't wait to play here again!

I had no tee time today, showed up at 8:30am. Starters were very helpful to me, I have never had a problem like at Rancho! Los Verdes HOME OF THE 6 HOUR ROUND!!!!!! The weather was perfect, greens were best I have seen here in a while. The group of 4 I played with were all very nice gentlemen. Forgot the kind of lies and shape of shots needed to play this course. You need a bag of tricks to score well here! No tee time then expect at least 8 hours to complete a round of golf. I survived the day and left with a smile? I can't say I enjoy rushing to wait and then rushing to wait for the next shot. But hey this course is worth it!!! $21.50 what a steal! Thanks Verdes for slaping me again , I will see you soon.

Typical round at Los Verdes. Very surly starter. Course was in okay shape. Fairways and greens good, many tee boxes not level, tough to get a tee shot not above or below your feet. This course and Victoria are the two closest courses to my home, and I rarely play both due to the attitude you get from the starters, and length of time to play. Also, with this course, I always feel it should be in better shape than it is, just because they have such a great location. But with their “1000’s” of regulars, they won’t miss me

Got to the course at 12:00pm on 4/20 and got out in an hour. Pace of play is slower on the front 9, almost 3 1/2 hrs, but the back nine played a little smoother. Course is in good condition with only a couple of holes with aeration marks still on them. The view is awesome and the greens definitely break towards the ocean regardless of what u see on the greens, it totally messed up my putting the whole day. Tricky tricky tricky!!!

Played this course today at twilight and I only had to wait 30 min to get on, which is really rare for this course. The course is in fair condition even with the greens arerated. The pace of play was pretty slow and the marshall was nowhere to be found. The wait wasnt as excruciating due to the awesome view of the ocean; it made the round much more relaxing.

First off, the starter got the groups mixed up so that caused some confusion on the first tee. Secondly the entire day was foggy with visibility on every hole about 80-100 yards. This course plays slow to begin with and the fog didn't help. If it wasn't for being with friends this day would have been better served at work. As a previous reviewer said, they are doing a lot work to the traps so there a lot of debris scattered about. Still like this course and need to go back after the weather gets better.

Los Verdes is by far the best Public golf course in Southern California. Yes it takes 5.5 hours to play but the views are well worth the wait. For all of those not from SoCal if you have visiting friends this "Poor Man's Pebble Beach" is the place to take them. They will leave so jealous that you have courses like this for this cheap in your own backyard. Just remember every putt breaks toward the ocean
