For an extremely long golf course, the South course at Los Serranos stretches over surprisingly rolling terrain, incorporating hillsides and gullies into a layout that is somewhat challenging to walk. Other than its length, the course is not terribly difficult, but at 7470 yards from the championship tees (which can only be played with pro shop permission and only on weekdays), all the way down to nearly 6000 yards from the forward tees, length is certainly a formidable defense.
The layout is adequate without being overly memorable. Undoubtedly, the course would benefit from a better playing surface than the kikuyu that seems to dominate the course. The fairways and rough, especially in the areas close to the greens, are mostly spongy kikuyu which is a less than ideal species of grass for a game of golf. The greens themselves are decent, though they don't hold particularly well due to their resilient spongy nature. They are mostly consistent though, which is a huge plus, with speeds that I would characterize as average.
Overall, Los Serranos South is a course that is a decent choice for a round if you want to change the pace from your normal rotation. The price is right, especially for twilight, and you'll find a course that is in decent condition and a layout that, though featuring some almost comically manmade lakes on the back nine, bucks the trend of affordable golf being flat, repetitive, and featureless.
