Los Robles Greens Golf Course has had its up’s and down’s these past years. It went through some major renovations in 2002 – 2003 where the course was closed for almost a year as a new driving range, golf holes, and clubhouse were built. The once solid par 5 ninth hole was reduced to a so so par 3 then redesigned to be a measly par 4 to make the course a par 70. On the flip side, the 18th hole, once a par 3 was redesigned to be a very fun par 4. Under much pressure to get the course open, it reopened a few months premature and turf conditions suffered. In fact up until now, Los Robles’s playing conditions were among the poorest in the Ventura County. I’m happy to report, that over the last few months, things have significantly improved! The greens are still pretty bumpy because of disrespectful golfers not fixing their ball marks, but the rest of the course is as lush as I have seen it in years. I think the biggest improvement is the tee boxes. Once very thin and divot scared, they are now very lush and well cared for. I also noticed more water stations and better on course service.
For those who have never played Los Robles, it’s a tight hilly track that showcases beautiful oak trees in strategic locations. The greens can be very challenging, especially #13, and are often well guarded by bunkers. The course only measures 6274 from the black tees but plays much longer due to doglegs, elevation changes, and forced lay-ups. If you take on the back nine from the black tees, be prepared to play one of the most difficult nines in the Ventura County. You’ll need to get your birdies on the par 5’s and survive the par 4’s. Hole 10 from the back tees is actually more difficult to reach in two then the directly adjacent hole 1 par 5.
Overall, I’ve always liked this course. With the resident discount it’s a great deal. At the standard rates it’s still a good value. Enjoyable for all skill levels and one of the few you can walk.
