Teed it up with fellow GK’ers rgm2525, Nickequire and GDR23 for a GK Review Guru round at The Mission Club. This was our second round of the day following our morning round at La Purisima. The course recently changed its name from Village Country Club to The Mission Club and is now open to the public. Now public but still has that relaxed CC vibe. Nice cozy practice facilities and clubhouse with friendly people. As GDR23 mentioned in his review, for you bombers, the driving range is going to be a little short so be careful.

I ended up loving this course after playing it for the first time. It had just the right amount of challenge, interesting holes, large variety of holes, elevation changes and excellent conditions. It’s a very thought provoking golf course off the tee that require well position shots that does not take driver out of your hand. Many doglegs in both direction with strategically placed beautiful trees. Green complexes were challenging yet fair and small at times. Approach shots straight forward with the occasional bunker coming into play. I think if the course could do one thing to improve, it would be a bunker renovation to make the approach shots more challenging and visually appealing.

The course was in great shape with the highlight being the greens. Super healthy dense poa, rolling very smooth with a decent pace and holding well stuck shots. Fairways were mostly lush providing good firm lies all day. Rough was cut down to 1-2 inches and pretty easy to escape being mostly lush. Bunkers greenside were very firm and close to hard packed in some I experienced. I was able to putt out of the bunker on hole #16 since the all have a ramp-like lips. One hole #17 that approach backfired – lol. Fairways bunkers were in actually better shape with firm and no hard-packed sand. Tee boxes were very good shape with full coverage, groomed and cut.

In all previous visits to the Lompoc region to play golf I would just play La Purisima. But now I’m always going to try to do a carbon copy of Monday with La Purisima in the morning and The Mission Club in the afternoon. This course was the perfect complement being unique in comparison and providing a different less challenging but fun experience. Its only 10 minutes from La Purisima and can played in easily under 4 hours. Highly recommended.

Played the Mission Club yesterday 4/10/2017 as a part of a GK Guru round with buddies Nickesquire1, JohnnyGK and RGM2525. We rode the blue tees (71.9-128-6546) in breezy conditions with a POP of 4 hours 30 minutes taking our time. For 3 of us this was a first look at this course which I believe used to be private and is now public. It's semi-tucked away winding through a very nice housing complex/development in Lompoc. The clubhouse is small but welcoming with friendly staff and a very laid back I would say retired folk vibe. Very peaceful out here. They had a grass driving range that Ron and I discovered might not be for drivers after hitting a couple drives on the range up the hill into sloped backyards. The sloped putting green resembles the greens on the course. Their snack bar was closed on Monday afternoon. The carts were in very nice shape but did not provide GPS. You can tell that this used to be a private course in that I felt everything was in at least above average to good shape other than maybe the bunkers which were at least average. The greens were the highlight of the course. Holding shots like darts, putting medium speed and not a blemish on them. I thought they were in great shape. Rarely do I rate poa greens this high but I would say they were close to an 8.5/10--very well done. Some of the green complexes have some undulation to them and I thought the coolest thing about the green complexes were some of them especially on the back nine were tucked around a circle of housing complexes. Usually I don't like to see houses close to the golf course for peace of mind but these greens had a cool Palm Springs feel with a natural amphitheater vibe to them. The fairways provided nice ample cushion, very little to no problem areas at all. Rated 7/10. The tees were in good shape, mostly all level and only the par 3's contained some divots. Rated 7/10. The rough was thick but did not seem that penal at all after playing La P. It was in good shape mowed between 1-2 inches. Rated 7.5/10. Was in greenside bunker on #14 and a fairway bunker on #16. The fairway bunker was perfect with hardpacked sand to hit out of. The greenside bunker that I was in had enough sand but playing partners commented that possibly the bunkers could use more overall sand in them. Rated 6.5/10. The layout reminded me of so many short, tight, semi-hilly dogleg courses I have played in the past. Only difference here is this course had OB or red staked areas at the perimeter or corners of almost every hole unlike some of the other dogleg courses that come to mind. Both 9's flowed well and it is a fun layout. If you like to work the ball big time both ways around treeline fairways this place is for you. I would recommend this course to any type of player. Very unique enjoyable semi-tough and fun layout.

Played 12-14-16 mid morning in about 2 hours and 45 minutes in a cart with a little jumping around. Tee boxes were in good shape mostly level and semi-lush. Fairways were in good shape, a little yellow/green but very nice lies. Rough is about in the same shape as fairways with some minor bare spots a little farther from the fairway, and not to difficult to hit from. Was in one greenside bunker that was a little thin with firm sand. Greens were in very nice shape, holding shots real good , and rolling medium speed and smooth. Very fun medium length course with semi-narrow tree lined fairways requiring you to move the ball both ways. Jeff in the pro shop was great letting me tee off on the back first and recommending I jump around on some of the loops on the front side to get past some slow groups. If you are in the area I recommend playing this course.

Played here on 8/18, after a very nice round at LaPurisima, I would rate Lapurisima, but, there have been a number of reviews the past month or so, and, I very much agree with their ratings,now to the Village, it is open to play to the public, but, I would call to check on tee time availability, lots of member events at all times of the day, so call ahead to be sure of being able to play. A real nice Ted Robinson designed golf course, not overly long, but, makes you hit golf shots, especially when dealing with the wind that comes up in the afternoon. Greens in very nice shape, fairways a little thin, rough sketchy in areas, tees in good shape, no bunker shots, so no comment, if you are in the area, check it out, rumor has it that the owners of Lapurisima are looking at buying this course, and with the demise of Marshalia, things could be happening, play well, stay healthy, CGG...

This course is beautiful with fast greens, narrow fairways lined with houses/condos in some spots.
The clubhouse where we received our cart key, etc. is small.
The driving range is as well and needs work.
The fairways were cut short and relatively green throughout.
Tee boxes were in good shape and the greens were running at about a 9 on the stimp meter per my guess.
The course is worth playing if you are in the area and I would play the course again hoping for a few upgrades to the clubhouse and range.
Last but not least the food in the bar/restaurant is excellent.

Today was the first-time I played this course. The occasion was a SCGA Outing. I played from the whites with 10:53am tee time. Lots of interesting holes with tree placements in the middle of the fairways and big trees at the corners of the doglegs. You have to shape the ball around this course. The greens were great. The PGA Head Golf Professional, Bob Kotowski , went into great detail before the round tell us "How to play the course". I wish I could do all those things. I did appreciate it. I can't wait to play this course again.
