Walked the Blacks (6548/72.7/134) in 4H, 15M on their midday rate of $20 on 10/28. Paired up with 2 local seniors for an enjoyable round. The weather was VERY windy, overcast and around 70. Last time here in early 2012, the rough was thick and punitive. Fast forward 3 1/2 years, and there basically is no rough here. Chatted with the guy in the pro shop, they use reclaimed water and concentrate on the tees, fringes + greens and it really shows. They do not concentrate on the fairways and rough, which is obvious from 1/2 mile away. The parts they concentrate watering are well above average, the parts they don't are very poor. The tees were very good, lush with few unfixed divots. The fairways were very poor, basically hardpan, weeds and occasionally a grassy area. Tight lies on almost every shot AD from the fairway unless you were relatively close to a green. The rough usually had more grass than the fairway, but it was also very thin. The sand traps were flat out excellent. I was in 3, and all were very well maintained with an adequate amount of fine, high quality sand. The greens were very good. Smooth, medium speed consistent from green to green and very receptive to holding iron shots. These greens have more break that you would think on 1st glance. This is a challenging track that will test your game, especially in the wind, which always seems to blow here. Constantly up/down hills, it is a very challenging course to walk. The customer service was excellent, I got some tips from the pro shop beforehand on where to aim on certain holes that came in handy in dealing with the thin fairways. I like the layout, good variety of holes (five par 5's, six par 3's, seven par 4's, par 71). While also thin, a decent practice range that includes a green to practice sand/chipping/pitching shots. I would play here on a regular basis if I lived in the area. Recommended IF you can tolerate very thin fairways and rough with the rest of the course above average.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the conditions at Dairy Creek. This course was a gem several years back but the SLO Park and Rec Dept. has REALLY done a poor job maintaining this course. Pro shop staff should inform all golfers of the extremely poor condition before they arrive or before they pay their green fees.

To say the fairways were thin would be a severe understatement. There was no grass on any of the fairways. Green complexes and tee boxes were the only areas on the course that appeared to be watered at all. If you want to blame the conditions on the state's drought, one does not have to look far to see courses experiencing the same limited resources but our still in fair to excellent shape. If you were a zero use facility using reclaimed water already, shouldn't the course be even BETTER capable of handling the state's current drought? I feel it's more of a sign of poor management from the municipality.

Played Saturday 5/17 at 8:30 am for the second round of our two day guys' getaway. This course sometimes gets a bad rap, but I found it challenging. The driving range area is large and in good condition. Hitting off the grass you hit due west toward the ocean. Nice. Was required to play from the blue tees for this competition, though I am much more comfortable from the whites. There are many elevation changes, blind shots and barrancas cutting across the fairways; course knowledge would be helpful. The greens had been sanded two weeks earlier. Though they had recovered nicely, there were still some bumps and they rolled medium/slow. They rolled true however. The bunkers had compacted, wet sand in them. For me, not necessarily a bad thing as I could usually escape in one shot. Fairways were lush with some tight lies. The wind really blew up on the back 9 creating a three club difference at times. There are many forced carries where the wind creating problems. The staff was fantastic and took great care of our group. If you're on the Central Coast, this is definitely worth a play.

Built into the hills there is plenty of elevation changes and valleys to hit over. Dairy Creek provides water hazards and ravines to challenge your distance control and sensibility on whether to go for broke or play it safe. Staff was friendly and helpful. The course was fun and challenging at the same time. There aren't many risk reward holes, but play it safe and you'll find yourself in a much better mood. This is an accuracy first track, not for long drive contestants. The course was in great condition. Very scenic, and lush. There are wide turkeys, jack rabbits and sheep to keep you company. POP was a non-issue. I went out at 4 PM and finished before 7PM on a Monday afternoon.

I enjoyed the challange of this course on most holes. The only issue I had is the lack of rough. On several holes (hole 12) even good shots are penalized and roll right directly accross fairway and hard pack rough into the hazard. In my opinion Dairy Creek needs to grow a little grass to stop all but the worst shots from rolling OB or into hazards. This also affects pace of play when you expect a ball in left fairway and you end up finding it in the right hazard over 50 yards away.

Our group voted immediately to NOT return for our annual trip to the area.

Played up here this morning. Had a 6:30 tee time, but there was a 2-hour frost delay (apparently a rarity here). Me and another single teed off first at 8:30 and finished in 3 hours, so still not bad. $47 walking fee (they charge $17 cart fee per rider, which seems excessive) and this course is definitely a workout to walk. Very hilly. The course was in really good winter shape. A bit soggy early on as the frost melted off, but it dried out quickly enough. Fairways and rough in decent shape. Mostly green and good lies easily found on and around the fairways. When I looked at my pictures, it appeared more green in the pics than it did in person, but overall very nice for winter. Bunkers full of great sand. Tee boxes mostly level. Greens in great shape. More receptive than I would guess they normally are because of the wetness. The greens here are big and feature a lot of undulation. Many are elevated, as well, making for some awkward approach shots and chips. This is a fun course. The front nine is a bit more open and forgiving, but the back nine tightens up significantly with narrower landing areas and more environmental hazard areas in play. Kind of a scenic little valley and the back nine especially has a number of nice views. I'd definitely recommend the course as a solid Central Coast option.

Played on SAT, 8/25. This is a hidden gem with great value in SLO! They have a $39 special after 1 pm with cart and a beer. If you are student, it is only $27 bucks. What a great deal and pace of play was 4.15. This is a tough course, right away the 1st 4 holes will bite you. Fairways are very tight tie and if you miss the fairway the balls will keep on running to the environmental hazards with snakes and other animals lurking. We saw a baby coyote twice. Unique elevation changes and reminds me of Lost Canyon - Sky Course @ 1/4 of the price and much better conditions. Many forced carries on 1st and 2nd shots. Driving accuracy is a premium with some blind tee shots if you miss the fairways. Greens were in great shape, because no one can hit a d%mn green...so very little ball marks. They were running around a 9.5/10. Clubhouse gives out free yardage books. Like mentioned before by longball23, walking this course is a tough tough task. Will definitely return to this course; great value for the price. Good work Dairy Creek!

Good views, little waiting, easy to get tee times, especially on line. The food is very good too. Prices on golf and food can't be beat, and are a great value.

Played Dairy Creek this afternoon 3/4/12 with Nickesquire1 from gold tees at 1pm. First comment you better be in good shape to walk this track. The course is a lot more difficult on the front nine vs the back nine. It has very hilly terrain and reminded me of a shorter La Purisma. Wind can be a factor here probably on most days I am assuming but today we lucked out a bit and it only got as strong as 10-12mph. There are two challenging par 3's from the gold tees. Many elevated tee boxes here as well as some smaller green complexes with not a lot of depth depending on the hole. I would not call this target golf but for sure many holes where numerous ravines, lakes and crap come into play. The greens were smooth poa annua surfaces that ran fast chipping wise and semi-fast putting wise. The fairways did not appear that green to the naked eye but had enough coverage for the most part. The tees were almost level on every hole and provided enough lushness and coverage. The sand was raked and in decent to good shape. Pace of play was 4 hrs 15min. Staff friendly and $25.00 Twilight deal for the weekend was a decent deal. If you can hang on through the first 5 holes here there are some scoring holes to take advantage from later on in the round.
