Played here on 2/22. The course was still drying out from the major rains we had over the past month. The greens were about as slow and bumpy as I have seen them ever. I had one of those free coupons for the survey I filled out so it was worth seeing how the course was. Although the course drains well , I would not recommend playing there until the rains let up.
Played last Sunday and what a glorious, sun-filled day amongst a week surrounded by rain. Outstanding treatment of bag guys, proshop personnel. You can tell the guys are proud to work here. Course was a little soggy, not a lot of roll on the fairways but the greens were fine. Work is being done to some of the bunkers but with all the rain, that's to be expected. The front bank on 18 is tarped, due to too much rain but the rest of the course is outstanding, as usual. The NCGA deal here has been a huge, huge hit and it has been extended to April. Unbeatable deal right now for a Top 100 golf course. Julie Inkster came out in the afternoon after we finished and started off the No. 1 tee to play a round of golf. She's totally cool. Can't wait to get back..
Chalk Mountain has been the poor sister to SLO County owned courses Morro Bay and Dairy Creek the past few years. That said, they have made a lot of improvements to the greens and bunkers (a legit complaint in a post dated a few years ago). Drainage has always been a problem but that's improved too. I used to skip this course for years, but since the improvements it's a fun place to play. Not a great course, by any means, but not bad, especially for the price.
This is, IMHO, the best course in the area, certainly north of Arroyo Grande. Interesting layout. You have to think yourself around the course. Always in great condition. During the summer mornings are best as it can get hot in Paso.
Really nice gc. Have to adjust for elevated tee boxes or greens. Fast greens and very undulated. No. 17h; you have a chance to win 10grand. Nice views and right at the edge of the Pacific. Better if you walk it.
For how well this course is kept I was really surprise how inexpensive the greens fees were. $15 on the weekend! If you're a golf pro you'll probably be yawning on some of the holes from lack of a challenge but for excutive course its acutally on the harder side. There's two water carries to the green and a couple holes that anything hit past the green will be OB. Green's are FAST. I didn't have time to practice on the putting green before we teed off and it was a mistake as I watched my first putt fly past the hole. Overall a great excutive course, well maintained and very reasonably priced.
Played last Sunday after years of driving by it to play Spy, Spanish, Poppy, etc. Have played here before but not since the redesign. Wow, it is really, really a pleasure and a joy to play a golf course like this. Exceptional conditions and unbelievable facility. First of all, when we drove in, there were 10 cars in the parking lot. Where is everybody at 10am on a Sunday? Basically had the course to ourselves. Pro shop guys were nice, starter cool, but no cart girl. Range is exceptional, balls are all NXT Tours. Tees, fairways and greens are hard, tight and fast. Turf is very nice! The redesign is similar to what they did to Industry Hills, cleaned it up and cut away trees and underbrush. What's left is still an absolutely brutal golf course but if you could hone your game here, you'd be a + player. Can't wait to return and play the BlackHorse. The hot chili bowl at the turn was yummy.
Place is a pretty good value; $29 to walk on the weekends but imo you definitely get what you pay for. The course is pretty mickey mouse with several holes being short but having trees come into play immediately off the tee box. There are at least four holes where power lines come into play and there is a trailer park inside the course. On the plus side the greens were puttable albeit hard and slow (a tough combination) and there are some really nice holes with 7, 14 and 17 coming immediately to mind. If you happen to be in the sanger/reedley area it might be worth stopping by but absolutely do not make a special trip to go play this place.
