Played for 1st time in late November, about 9 a.m. temps in the high 40's to start, mid 50's to finish and the wind was nearly non-existent. No driving range, but a net/shed to sort of loosen up. Visually beautiful course. Right near the ocean, though no real views, but true links style golf with tight, comfortable fairways, rolling mounds and pretty fast given the amount of rain this area gets. Not a long course, and that's probably a good thing because it is a pretty small footprint for the entire course and oncoming golfers from other holes are definitely in the line of fire for wayward shots. Keep an eye out for them and just wait a few seconds for them to clear to be sure no one is in danger. It is a shot making course with small and beautiful greens which rolled exactly as they should on the Pacific coast. Bunkers, tee boxes and greens were perfect for looks and play. Greens are tricky and even though I had a good ball striking day I misread a bunch of makable birdie putts inside 10 feet. The rough (not the first cut, which is green and lush) is a little weird in that the locals call it "long grass" and you aren't supposed to drive near it with carts; yet most of the "long grass" was cut or chewed down to ground level on this day, with small patches of longer, wispy stuff. A bit confusing to a newcomer. Lots of memorable holes and the 18th, played from the 2nd to longest tee this day, is 588 yards as opposed to the 640 yards from the tips, is one of them. A great hole ending with an uphill 3rd to a very small green near the hotel. The place is filled with friendly and helpful staff members, bars and food spots - including a great bar/grill tucked into the weather sheltering dunes near the 9th hole, well away from the clubhouse. The entire property is a lot of fun. Would highly recommend and will return. The summer months must be awesome here. Definitely check it out.

Played late morning on 6/6 with my uncle. Got a course layout description and some helpful advice from both guys in the pro shop. The course is very much a links style built into the low lying sandy dunes a couple hundred yards from the NW Oregon coast. Plenty of wispy grass grows between holes ready to make recovery shots difficult. Greens were firm and landing short was usually an option. Fairway grass coverage was very good and rough wasn't very bad until you hit the really long stuff. Greens were solid overall outside the first par 3 that appeared to have been re-sodded recently. The course had lots of character with many interesting angles and cants that will shoot your ball into... undesirable spots. Wind was up and blowing by about hole 6 making the last 12 a real adventure. It's the only 18 hole course in the area so prices are a little more expensive that you might expect but it's still a lot of fun and worth checking out if you're in the area.

Note: They are expanding/redoing the first fairway so a few tractors and graders were out.

This is a solid little course. It is a lot more difficult than in may seem. Being right on the coast, there is always a bit of a wind, one to two clubs with or against. There are a bunch of little rolling hills and bumps around the course so if you are off the fairway, you will have some sort of uneven lie. The fairways were cut pretty nicely but not too short since it is still early in the season. The greens were in great shape. Putts roll smooth and straight which are always a help to scoring. There were just a couple of soft spots due to the amount of rain the Oregon coast has had lately.

Play for $35 in the off season. $75 in the summer for an early tee time and $35 in the afternoon.

Gearhart is the oldest course west of the Mississippi River. While there aren't any ocean views, the course sits just inland about a Bubba Watson drive away from the water. The salt air and heavy, cool wind make it feel like a links course along with the firm playing conditions, mounding and numerous bunkers. It's a very playable course for all skill levels with no forced carries and most holes have openings in front of the green to allow for bump & runs shots.

The greens are very small with soft contouring. The bunkers are filled with beach sand, which tends to be pretty soft and heavy. It's a very fun course where you can score playing aggressive or conservative. Very easy to walk. There aren't many good options for golf along the northern Oregon Coast, but Gearhart is a standout. It's a very charming place with a Lodge and McMenamin's Brew Pub on-site. I highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

On vacation in Oregon, and I had the chance to sneak out early one morning to play Gearhart. The course was in very nice shape, the only thing being that the greens looked as though they were punched a couple of weeks ago. They rolled a little better than they looked, but were definitely the weakest part of the conditions. Fairways, tee boxes, traps, rough were all excellent.

The layout isn't very long, but there's enough challenge as a lot of the holes are really narrow. Some of the par threes play pretty long as well. Overall, a very fun layout. If you're in this part of Oregon, it's definitely worth checking out.
