First off, most GKers can't seem to say the username....the name is NOT....H..8...BOGEYS. It's "H and 8, putting them together....H8....oh....hate bogeys. Anyhow, lets get to the review of the course:

TEES & FWYS: Given the fact that I've never played this course, I can't really compare what other reviewers have said about the course. From a one time empirical observation, the course is PHENOMENAL!
The tee boxes were immaculately cut, fairways were in great condition, I didn't really have any problems with the ESA (environmentally sensitive areas) so it didn't really come into play during my round. Most fairways and the holes for that matter have elevation changes which really challenges your mental game to select the right club.

GREENS: This is where I had problems (scoring wise)....they had some patchy areas, maybe some recovering viral infection? But, this did not affect the roll of the ball. Course knowledge is definitely a plus, I just couldn't figure out the breaks, FATHER CHEESE said it right, "A two-footer was no gimmie". Most greens were very large, even though it has rained the last few days, and we got rained on while playing two holes, the greens were very fast and not very receptive on the chip shots. TOUR QUALITY GREENS, I like that!

STAFF: The staff was great, very courteous, the post-round event with the GK outing was very nice. I had a chance to meet other GKers. This course is a must to place on your rotation once the weather conditions improve.

OVERALL: Great course, the views were picturesque, alot of photo-op opportunities, at one point I think we were able to see all the way down to Newport and looking slightly southwest a view from Long Beach was also pretty clear to see. Once we get some sunshine again, I definitely want to challenge the course, particularly the greens since they kicked my a#& during this event. Thanks to the staff, and JohnnyGK and coordinating GK staff for a great event! And if you see me next time, now you know.....it's HATE BOGEYS, not H....eight...bogeys!

Wow, BIGDOGS review pretty much sums up my review. I also was finally able to play with BigDog and Rtewfik...I enjoyed playing with FEAR at "BigDog's Knollwood tournament" so it was fun playing with him again. We both seem to try to outdrive each other, if you've played with him his a very long ball hitter.

Well, there really isn't much to say about the course, the review below (BigDog's) was described exactly as to what the course conditions are at this time. It was my first time playing there and was pleasantly surprise at how nice of a track it is even with all the construction going on....the pace of play was great!

Tees & Fairways: Played here for the first time to commemorate "The Big Dog" tournament. Thanks to "Ringworld" and his tip prior to my round on where the greens break....it helped me earn 11 one putts, 9 of them to save par! Anyhow most tees had some bare lies, slightly uneven, but definitely playable and expected during these so called winter conditions for So.Cal. The fairways were pretty firm, some bare spots, and lots of "fluffy" lies for my cart partner FEAR.

GREENS: The only slow green was the first green (my only 3 putt), most greens were pretty fast, the key is keeping the ball below the hole as most greens sloped from back to front. Hardly any pitch marks, it seems like most golfers that play Knollwood have some golf etiquette.

IMPRESSION: It's a nice little track from the blues, it plays around 6400 yards. Course knowledge is definitely a plus here. I got in trouble on a few holes due to the lack of it, but my playing partners gave me some good advice on a few holes. The only complaint was the pace.....it took us 5 1/2 hours to play....way to sloooooooooow!

STAFF: Well, both OSCA1961 and I showed up on Sunday morning around 7:00 a.m., we didn' t have a tee time but after reading the reviews we really wanted to play here. The starter got us out by 7:30 a.m...KUDOS! to the proshop they were great, friendly, and very professional.

FAIRWAYS & GREENS: We had to start on #10, it was 31* around 7:00 a.m., so they opted to put us out on the back nine since apparently the greens defrost quicker on that side. The fairways were immaculately trimmed, rough was about an 1" high, but it was coooold! Greens were about a 9 on the stimpmeter since they were still frozen, slowly they started to defrost but the ball was not very receptive on the greens in that weather.

BUNKERS: I was in the long fairway bunker on the first hole (#10) for our purposes as described above...it was pretty soft, caught the ball clean and hit the back the green. The ball spinned about 30 feet, leaving me a 12 ft for birdie, but missed!

OVERALL: The course is in great shape, not too many pitchmarks on the greens. The divots have been kindly replaced by fellow golfers with etiquette or at least reseeded. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to get out and enjoy a beautiful PGA quality course!

TEES: The boxes were beautiful, even lies and hardly any broken tees lying around. This is a tough track to play from the blue tees, especially in cold weather.

FAIRWAYS: We played "lift, clean, and place" rules with our group of guys since it was drizzling, which was great because it scared most golfers away. We didn't have a group behind us until a two-some caught up around the 10th hole and we let them through. Well, back to the fairways, they were pretty nice with hardly any divots or unfair lies.

GREENS: The greens were a little slow due to the rain, but they still maintained their roll on most holes. They were probably an 8 on the stimpmeter, most break away from the mountain on the North.

STAFF: This is probably the only thing that deters me from this course, the starter must have "short-man syndrome". He's very cocky, rude, and tries to talk to you like your a little kid. He tried to elucidate that the course was wet and ergo carts would not be tolerated on the fairway...and I quote, "I will have the marshall take the key from your cart and you'll be walking the rest of the course". They need to teach this guy people skills, since he obviously has none.

OVERALL: Again, fun track wish I would have played better but had a lot of fun with the guys, especially OSCA1961. I would rate the course at a solid 8.0, but I'm sure the pace of play was not a true condition of this course due to the rain.

TEE BOXES: They keep reseeding these tee boxes but what they really need to do is "level" these tee boxes because every single one of the tee boxes starts you off in an unfair lie. You either have an uphill or downhill lie right off the box. The course if fairly long from the blue tees around 6800 yds, but I guess the only defense here is uneven lies everywhere.

FAIRWAYS: This is definitely a beginner's course since the fairways range between 75 to 100 yds wide...really no trouble on the course even if you hook, slice, pull, push, anything is really playable. Most golfers don't replace their divots after trying to dig their own grave, so most of the overwhelming large divots are spread all over the fairways like a minefield. They have really improved the course since the new management took over, kudos to Robert, "The GM" and their staff.

BUNKERS: They seemed okay, I wasn't in one bunker at all today so I can't really justify their true description and playability.

GREENS: The greens were a little lumpy and bumpy...I guess the previous cold weather from a few days ago left a lot of damage from players walking on "defrosting" greens. A lot of small depressions were clearly evident all over the green from small little spikes walking all over it. The only defense at this course is really their small greens, I suggest to just aim at the "center" of the green and from there you have a putt for birdie, if not get your par and get out. They have "temporary greens" on #12, #14, and #15...they should be getting the new greens up to playing conditions probably by mid January. They look amazing and this course will definitely have to be re-rated because the slope rating will be a lot more difficult with the new greens in place.

STAFF: Very friendly staff, particularly Robert, the general manager there. Tomas and Ron, the starters are very friendly guys and will get you on (walked on as a single) at a pretty decent time frame.

OVERALL: I would rate the golf course at a 6.0, it could be a lot better and it's definitely showing some improvement over the last few years. Golfers just need to remember to fix their divots on the fairway, fix their pitchmark, and keep the pace of play!
