Played here at the end of July. Weather was great but a little warm. The greens were in pretty good shape. However, the fairways were inconsistent with weeds and some bare spots. I don't mind it if the rough is high and you have to hack it out. But at Carlton Oaks, you could be a yard off of the fairway and find yourself in a weed patch. The condition of teh course off of the fairways were very poor. The bunkers were in varying condition. Some bunkers were hard with little sand and others were deep sand ---not to be confused with some of the waste areas around the course.

I will skip this course next time.

Played here on 06-30-07 and found the course in varying conditions. The greens are perfect, yes perfect. They are on the smaller side with the exception of a couple holes and they roll true and without ANY bumps, if you get it on line its going in. The tee boxes werent in such good shape, they were beat up. Fairways were average, maybe a little above average. All in all its a great track, and with the greens being in such good shape I would recommend it to everyone. You can play the Black tees at nearly 7300 yards but youd better be able to bang it. Its been hot lately and this course is in a hot spot, Santee, add 10 degrees to your idea of hot and thats how hot it is out there. Try to play early am as the wind starts blowing around 11-12 and continues all afternoon. Lots of trees, water hazards and OB, the rough looks like its on its way up but is very fair and playable. Enjoy this one.

The course is in GREAT shape. The greens were rolling about an 11 on the Stipmeter. Fast, I mean very fast!!! A lot of wind in the afternoon. The course is very difficult to score on (I mean birdies). You never have a flat lie it seems. Be sure you play the right tees for your game. One of the best layouts in SD in my opinion.

I was able to get on at the twilight rate of $45 and I teed off at about 12:10 and got in the whole round. Not sure what the regular rate is but I wouldn't pay that much more for this course. There were some bare spots throughout the course and some of the greens had a few bad spots on them but in general the greens rolled very good. The fairways were in great shape but the rough was hit or miss. Some of the rough was think and there are many areas where there is no real penalty for missing the fairway. This is a long course depending which tees you play and the wind can be pretty brutal here.

They had lightly topdressed the greens, which actually helped, but they were not very good. (too bumpy) Tee'd off at 7:00am and never saw another group, behind or in front. Don't understand why, because this is a very nice track.

I played here while on vacation last week and I had the first tee time at 7:03am...The starter let us out a little earlier. We played 18 holes in 3 hours (twosome)! It was my first time playing here and I can say that it is worth $55 green fee (weekday). I loved this course.

Played July 14, 2006 for supertwilight rate. The pro shop charged me $30 but I told him the website says $25. He told me the website hasn't been updated for six years? This makes me feel not so right even before 1st tee. The course is well designed that has many challenging bunkers and small greens. But the course is really in a bad shape and the conditions are disappointing. The tee boxes are like divot mine fields, bare spots on the fairways (which wastes good tee shots), and the green have so many unrepaired ball marks (once I have to fix three ball marks alone the line). In summary, I would love to play again but not until they spend more time caring this course.

Played 4th July , 2006. The overall condition was pretty darned good. The tee boxes were good not too chewed up at all; fairways had a few thin spots but overall were quite decent. The bunkers were a bit inconsistent. Hit out of #2 right side and there was only about ½ inch of sand before you panned out. The other bunker I was in that day had plenty of sand. My fellow competitor also bladed a bunker shot. His went over the lake on #12. It went at lease over 90 yards over water back onto # 11’s fairway. It was a classic hard blast type bunker play that got bladed hard. Other than those two examples over all they were kept in good shape. I didn’t notice any left over footprints. (Hardly any ball marks either). The greens were receptive and putted true. The Pete Dye designed greens were generally small and undulated. On some greens the undulations were so steep it looked like the mowers were having trouble following the slopes. They can be a very difficult to play if you were not in the proper position, or short sided yourself. Overall I liked this course. It’s not an easy play course, I mean to score there you have to play pretty darned good. Pace of play was important 4.5 hours max. That’s good. The staff was very courteous and helpful. I will come back and play it again.
