Sandpiper Golf Course “Poor Man’s Pebble Beach” as referred to by many because of the numerous spectacular holes bordering the Santa Barbara coast, is an exceptional golf experience. Standing on the 6th tee, a gorgeous par 3, it is easy to be overcome by the tranquil ocean views and sounds of crashing waves. But the best is yet to come. Once rounding the turn, it’s time to be treated to a 5 hole stretch few courses can rival highlighted by a magnificent elevated sharp dogleg par 4, then their signature par 3 hole 11, and in MYHO, hole 13, one of the best risk/reward par 5’s found anywhere. From an amenities standpoint, you’re not going find an elaborate clubhouse with formal dining, lounge, fancy bathrooms, and so forth. The money invested in this facility is clearly prioritized to employing top-notch people and to the upkeep of the golf course. Over an 8 month span beginning late last year, Sandpiper reconstructed all of their greens. The result, the best greens I’ve have putting on all year. FAST, FIRM, and as SMOOTH as a pool table. When I say FAST I mean it. I spoke with the Superintendent during our round and he let me know that although the greens were running 12 on the stimp meter, the last time they were cut was 3 days ago! Interesting story I heard from the GM was a compliment Fred Couples made about Sandpiper’s greens after his recent play at the Presidents Cup. Freddie mentioned to him that the greens at Sandpiper were actually better! Regarding the fairways, rough, and tee boxes, all were lush and well groomed despite the very low rainfall the Santa Barbara region has received this fall. Some of you who have played Sandpiper in the past will remember how thin the fairways and especially surrounding areas once were. That is no more. The big reason being is they have installed a new irrigation system which provides excellent coverage compared to the old one. No more cutting corners to shave distance as even the bordering vegetation is getting watered. On a final course note, there are plans to modify some of the sand traps so to have a stacked turf look but the majority of them will remain unchanged. For the most part the bunkers are very fair, not too penal, and well maintained with excellent sand. Overall, you can’t miss with Sandpiper. Before all the improvements, the course was still an attractive play because of the amazing ocean layout. Now with the greatly improved playing conditions, this place is a no brainier. Great Layout, Great Service, Great Playing Conditions. Worth every penny. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
