Played here today. Only gripe was the greens. They are a little more bumpier than I remember from last week and some of the greens had some bald patches. Don't know what sort of mischief is about but folks fix your divots and it's not nice to make a mark on the green and not fix them. I think also the guy who is moving the hole locations needs to check his hole maker. It's leaving a noticeable mark on the grass that he replaces.

Fairways in good shape. Rough is thick and unforgiving. Bring out your extra club here to even have a prayer of reaching the green if you're a little off the fairway. Wind was cooperating and kept us cool. Please have the marshal make his rounds around the golf course to bring water to us overheated golfers. He should at least be able to make two round trips around the golf course per hour -- AT LEAST.

Aside from the pot marks on the greens it's a good deal at $29.99 on Golfzing (includes cart).

Played here last week. Course getting ready for LB Open. Course conditions are perhaps the best I have seen in quite a while.

Greens rolled true. Speed is med/fast. Fairways in great shape. Rough is thick and sticky. Tee Boxes are flat and they are rotating them well to prevent it getting too rough. Sand in bunkers are restocked and fluffy.

Conditions here are the best I have seen. Even better is the pace of play -- No one in front/behind us and we finished in around 3.5 hrs. Just had to wait on a few (and I can count them on one hand) throughout the round.

Long Beach always takes care of their residents but for you folks outside LB try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Went out today around 9:45, had good service, we were paired with some awesome people, good pace of play, didn't really have to wait. The course was awesome, i might have found my new favorite course that doesn't cost me a weeks worth of work, haha. If you can, go play 'Big Rec' because you will not be disapointed.

Played mid morning today and was pleased with the overall maintenance of the golf course. Greens ran well, fairways were good, tees good, rough was cut down. The rough on the left side of # 17, a medium/short length par 5, can present a challenge. It is really thick and looks as if it is like this often being at the low point of the golf course. PoP was acceptable and staff was friendly.

Played May 16th p.m., last day of LB Senior Amateur. Although cooler than previous 2 days, it was still in 80s. I've played here many times. First time I realized there is almost no cold water on the course. Drinking faucet at #16 was not working. When I went inside the clubhouse after finishing #18, & before teeing off at #1, to fill up my water bottle, drinking fountain water was not cold. In stark contrast, Skylinks and El Do had plentiful cold water in thermoses w/ cups on a couple of tee boxes on front and back 9s. At Rec, if not for the cart girl or the grill at tee box #10, there would have been no cold beverages on the course for a 4 1/2 hour round on a hot afternoon. Men's room behind #6 green was closed. No water fountain near closed snack shack between #7 & #8. Water not cold near rest rooms at #14 tee box.

Slow boat to boredom at Big Rec on a blustery sunny day, Saturday 5/10/14 at 10:30AM. Played in a tourney with my club and, while we teed off on time, the slow started with 3 groups on #2 tee. 3 hours to play the front, and things didn't get going until #13 - then still a 5.5 hr round! "Marshals" sitting in carts telling jokes, handing out water, or what .... relaxing? Certainly not doing anything to move play along. A scramble tourney was out ahead of us, and these guys were BAD!! Numerous instances where the best of the 4 tee balls on an adjacent hole was in OUR fairway. (Another factor that slowed play!)

Greens were inconsistent - some very firm, some soft and receptive. All showed evidence of recent punching/sanding, but rolled well at medium speed. Most tees were torn up, especially the par 3s. OK lies in fairways, rough ranged from non-existent to wet, sloppy deep muck, depending on the local status of sprinklers. Bunkers looked like they were OK.

Just a real grind. Decent conditions, but who can stay interested. Recommended if the course will just manage its play for all guests.

Teed off at 7:00 on Saturday. The course is in good shape with the rough more of a factor than it usually is. The greens were very nice as usual. I give the review to note the pace of play was 4 hours. Very nice. We were a five some following a four some and had to wait a few times but rarely on the back. The pace was how it should be every time but rarely is. Good times on the links.

OK before I write a glowing review about the current golf course conditions here a Rec Park allow me to rant a little about the golf carts here.

Whoever the person or persons in charge of keeping the carts clean do a fine job. Don't get me wrong the carts came in fully charged and cleaned almost spiffy new. My problem is the guy/gal who decided to use an Armor-all coating in their washing of each and every bloody cart. Do they realize that stuff gets on everything? I mean your golf glove, your hands your golf shoes and what should be a slip resistant surface suddenly becomes slippery with just one application of the stuff? Come on use a little common sense here, you're turning what could be a potential lawsuit into a legitimate one if they continue to do this. The floorboards of the cart are slippery and I caught myself on more than one occasion sliding around; loosing my footing when I know I firmly planted my foot on the floorboard. I even have a nice bruise on my shin to prove it. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the problem not to mention the fact it literally gets on everything. I mean I could feel my club slip out of my grip. Had to wipe my glove on the grass just to give it enough traction.

All I am saying is you need to consider what you're doing because this golfer thinks what you're currently doing is a mistake.

OK golf course conditions. Greens in good shape. They roll true. Folks fix your divots. Fairways are in great shape. Rough is thick and sand in bunkers in decent shape. Pace of Play was a brisk 4 hours. Nice work done on the course and really enjoy playing here. I will just bring my own golf cart next time. No sense in renting a golf cart if they continue cleaning their carts with Armor-all. It's like coating each and every cart with lard and gets all over everything.

Played a twilight round today at Big Rec. Booked a Golfzing time for $14 at 2 pm and managed to tee off a tad earlier. The fairways were in traditional Big Rec shape which means they were pretty lush (kikuya lush) with no real bare areas. The greens were real bumpy today although that could have been due to the late tee time. They were soft and receptive and were rolling a tad slower than normal which is still pretty quick. The course recently renovated many of their bunkers and I have to say that the new sand is great. The course was really busy today and for the first 4-5 holes, pace of play was pretty slow. We managed to make the turn in about 2.5 hours. Instead of playing hole 10, I went back to hole 3 and played the front 9 again. It turned out to be a great decision. I was able to get in 18 holes (though I played some holes twice). For those of you who haven't played Big Rec, I would definitely recommend it. Although pace of play is never great and the course conditions are never immaculate, the old tradition layout of Rec really makes playing here worth the experience. The layout of Rec really reminds me of that of Riviera. There are many long and challenging dogleg par 4's to complement the handful of short ones. Locals call holes 6, 7, and 8 the Amen Corner of Rec.
