It has been a couple years since I played here. The course was not in nearly as nice condition as I recall it being. Greens were OK, but lots of issues with the fairways and a "general scruffiness" to the course. We were second off in the AM and played as a walking threesome in less than 2 1/2 hours so pace of play was great. Played the "tips" which means there are a few really strong holes. Fun course. Always enjoy playing here and the senior rate makes it a very good value.

Played yesterday 12/26 on a GN hot deal for $36 at 11:00am. Our foursome tee'd off on time but that was the highlight of the day pace wise. Stuck directly behind two fivesomes was brutal. Although to be fair they actually kept up but it was just plain busy yesterday. POP was 5.5 hours.

Would agree with most of the previous review. Bermuda was starting to go dormant although still mostly a shade of green in the majority of areas and very playable. Good lies all day long in the fairways. Tees, rough, and bunkers were all fine and no qualms. Greens were great early in the round but by the end they were a bumpy mess and inconsistent speed wise. Greens are pretty large, most slope from back to front and have more break than you think.

Been a few years since I played here and I forgot how tight this course can be. Lots of trees separating the fairways. The longer you hit it, the tighter the fairways get on most holes. Not a long layout as all par 5's are reachable as are a couple of short par 4's. Par 3's are long though and that's where the course shows its teeth the most. Lots of parallel fairways so there's room to recover from errant tee shots but at the same time that means a lot of incoming artillery so heads up. We almost got nailed a couple times with no fore call to be heard. Layout is flat as can be and very easy to walk. Wouldn't go out of my way to play but with a good deal or if in the area it's worth a look.

Finally got back to Rio Hondo on Christmas Day for a great $30 rate with cart. We got on early as a twosome as the very cool starter let us go out early, saying it wasn't that busy.

Finally got back to Rio Hondo on Christmas Day for a great $30 rate with cart. We got on early as a twosome as the very cool starter let us go out early, saying it wasn't that busy.

When I first came here in July the course was green as could be but that's not the case right now. However, to the club's credit, they posted an explanation in every cart explaining why the Bermuda grass is very lush in summer but tends to yellow out in any cold temperatures. Well it was a beautiful 80 degrees out, but of course any cold nights will do the damage. And to be fair, it wasn't all that bad.

Understanding that about the fairways, the tee boxes were pretty chewed up and dry but with a little effort finding a nice spot to tee off from wasn't impossible. The sand was fine and the greens rolled very well and fast, perhaps a few ball marks, but nothing awful.

Unfortunately I played about the worst round I've scored in almost a year, so that stunk, but I don't blame the course for that. It's challenging for a year-in rookie like myself, but very fair. I was just plain awful today so it took away a bit of the fun.

So for the very good greens fee and the great weather and course in good, albeit slightly brown, condition, it was well worth the trip out to Downey. Kudos again to the starter in the pro shop.

Played 10/26, course was in okay shape. Greens had sections that rolled well then other parts with bare spots. Fairways were thin but not bad other than that. Looks like they continue to work on the bunkers here, unfortunately the sand is very inconsistent from one trap to the next.

I have not played Rio Hondo since they've made improvements, and I was pleasantly surprised. From the ho-hum atmosphere of the course, to one of scenic holes, and the wonderful restaurant, I definitely will play the course again. The one drawback is the price of $39 to walk on a weekday.

Played this course for the first time in 10 years in early August and was very pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course and value given the deal we got from Golfnow. This time (Fri, Aug 30)? What a bummer! Teed off at 11a (about 5 min behind) and reached the first of 18 punched, slow, bumpy greens. 5.5 hours later we were finally done. Maybe it would have been less frustrating if we'd have seen just one ranger. But that wasn't the case.

Also note- the sign on 16 telling you the water is 248 yards from that spot- it's only off by about 35 yds. I found out the hard way.

Good course that had a very bad day.

Played here as a 4-some on Sunday 8/4. Tee time was 3:08pm for $36 incl cart. Not too bad. Course is it pretty good shape. Fairways are nice, rough is not too thick. Was only in 1 bunker on the back 9 and sand was soft. I'd say, most of the greens were in fair condition. It seemed to be mostly the fault of other golfers not fixing their divots. I fixed about 3-4 divots on almost every green.

Pace of play was not bad, finished in about 4.5 hours. Definitely would play here again. Just hope people fix their own divots!

Played a twilight round at Rio Hondo on 7/18/13 which was a steal for $22. I had wanted to play here for a long time and now I'm upset I didn't come sooner. Not sure if the course is always in this good condition, but I was truly impressed. Felt like a nice country club and not a muni track. Green, well-kept, beautiful scenery and very playable.

I would most certainly make it a point to come back to this course very soon. Sure, on the back 9 there are a few semi-annoying power towers to listen to, but that's really the only funky thing going on here. Lots of challenging, narrow fairways and some great water to work around.

I didn't have my best day of golf from a personal standpoint, but that's all on me as the course was top notch.
