First time playing South, played North once. Meant to play North but I would have had to wait and it was hot so I chose to play South. I had heard it was a push over and not as interesting as the North. It was a bit flat and featureless but I found it to be a decent challenge and fun enough. Tees: Mostly level a bit chewed up in spots but playable Fairways: mostly pretty nice with some dry areas, mostly, on the edges Rough: minimal Bunkers: all looked well maintained, firm brown surfaces with just a bit of a softer layer, playable Greens: receptive, small, smooth with a few ball marks (I fixed a goo share of them) but slow POP: a touch over 3.5 hrs, would have been quicker if not for the slow twosome in a cart I had to wait on all day, I was walking Customer service: saw a snack cart a couple times and a marshall with water which was nice Recommendation: $26 for an easy walk on a course with enough length, especially with wind involved, a bit of variation, nothing spectacular just standard straight forward muni golf, with enough challenge for a little practice (a few forced carries) to hold ones interest. Next I guess I need to try the restaurant.

Played AB North this morning with Tom, Mike and Jason. Pro shop was efficient, starter friendly, marshal helpful and the cartperson did a fine bloody mary. Those tee boxes were beautiful for a public course. Fairway mix of bermuda, poa and kikuyu was mowed tight and looked great with excellent coverage. They are putting a lot of water on this baby and it's showing. Two balls that landed left of the green, and not in the trap, on the par 3 7th stayed up. Don't know if I've ever seen that before. Greens were nice, but not real fast. Ball marks are inevitable with this much water, but they rolled real well. Sand was compacted in most traps, but it was sand and consistent from hole to hole. Collars and aprons are an integral part of this course and seem to be an area of focus; they are very well cared for. There are a couple of muddy areas in the rough which was thick and penal in few spots. IMHO this is the best walking value in SD hands down for a regulation 18.

First time at this course. I was very hesitant after reading previous reviews, but I had a great experience! The staff in the Pro Shop were courteous, not friendly, but I wasn't looking for a hug. Just factual and direct, not rude. The course was in very good shape except for the bunkers. They were mud or dried mud. A few times the maintenance staff rode within twenty yards of us while we were hitting, a minor annoyance for the $37 fee. The greens had been pucnched about a week earlier, it bothered me more than impacting my putting. Tee boxes were in very good shape. I truly feel the earlier reviews could be disregarded, I was so pleasantly surprised with the course! We plan to return to play the North Course in August even though it is a 2hr 15 min drive one way.

First time at Baker - played South with my wife on gift certificate. Front 9 by ourselves, back 9 with a pair of friendly retired-military gentlemen. Pace of play never felt like an issue. We waited for a couple minutes on a handful of holes.

Staff was fast and friendly, including cart lady we saw once each 9. There was some minor construction going on at the driving range, so access was awkward in some spots though the range was fully operational.

Course was well-kept and enjoyable. Mostly green though some dryer patches and a few dry spots here and there.

Greens rolled consistently medium/medium-fast and decently true, though I thought I maybe had a putt thrown by a bump once.

Generally wide-open layout, forgiving for the most part, though some holes have some dangerous OB that will make errant shots disappear. Overall I thought Admiral Baker South came through ideally for a Saturday afternoon round with my wife. She is a newer golfer and can be intimidated by full-size courses but that was not a problem here.

I might go elsewhere with a group of experienced golfers... for me, the course was challenging and enjoyable, but got a little dull at times due to limited variation in the layout and surroundings that are pleasant enough but don't compare with some other San Diego options.

Played Wed April 6 on a whim and had no problem walking on as a single. Being a Veteran helped with a few bucks on the rate so I only paid $19 to go out at 12:30pm as a single player paired up with another single.
The pace of play was great, we finished the front in just over an hour and a little longer for the back. I was back at home near SDSU at 4:40pm.
Tee boxes were in decent shape as were the greens and sand traps, some of the fairways had some bare spots but nothing too bad.
Staff was courteous.
This was my first time playing this course, I am anxious to try the "North" side.
I may have just found a new favorite course.

Played the south course today. Teed off a little before 8 and finished in four hours. Pace of play was good cause the course was crowded. Tees: pretty beat up but you tee it up anyways so not really a big deal. Fairways: most in good shape. Mostly green but thin. Never really had a bad lie. Sand: never in it but looked really good. Greens: best part of the course. Held shots well and most were in great shape. Faster speed then expected. Didn't have to repair a lot of marks either! Overall I think it's a fun track, not very challanging, but if you don't have high expectations you will have a good time.

Traps could use more Sand too. If the North wasn't such a BEAR I would play there more often as it's way better. Overall South gets a C, or 6.5 outta 10.

Decent Track. Within the last year they have redone the greens and they are now starting to fully heal and be truet. some of the holes are truly hokey but overall it is a fairly standard course

Admiral Baker must have been in the Union Navy. Like the Civil War, the North is far superior to the South at this facility. The replay rate with cart was just $20 (only $10 to walk), so that was a nice surprise. The South was actually a bit more busy than the North, but I played along with a couple other singles and we still finished in about 3 hours, 45 minutes. We all benefitted from the fact that most San Diegans were home watching the Chargers playoff game. By all accounts, today was an unusually uncrowded Sunday. The South was definitely not in as good a shape as its big brother. It seemed like every lie I had in the fairway and rough was different. Different patches of all types of grass. Many thin areas and some lush ones, too. Not horrible, but you really had to pay attention to the lie and grass on each shot. Tee boxes mostly good and bunkers solid, as well. Greens here are different type of grass than on the North. Very soft and receptive, but also smooth on putts rolling at medium speeds. The soft turf did lead to some ball mark damage, but nothing terrible. I did notice some burnt-out spots on a couple of greens, but the holes were kept away from those areas. The South is an OK course, but nothing too interesting or challenging. I liked North way better, which was to be expected. The back nine is better than the front (and the 3rd is a nice par-3, as well). It's fun to be aggressive here with a number of short par-4s and not a ton of trouble to get into. Mounding around the greens is a nice design touch. I'll post some pictures for the South soon. The few that are on the page now are actually of the North course. The staff here was great and very reasonable prices on food/snacks/drinks, too.
