It was a nice trip back to Tierra Rejada on Sunday, returning for the first time since a GK event there a while back. This tough track will always be a great challenge for mid-high handicaps like myself, but it was nice to take it on while in a good stretch of form. This course has so much teeth on the front nine, but gives you some hope with a much flatter, straight-forward back nine, but then 18 makes you finish strong once again.

I was with three friends including Mattias and we played from the blue tees, with carts and around a $70 online rate which is absolutely fair for the current course conditions and layout. While the rest of the landscape is brown and looks quite fire-welcoming, the fairways and rough stand out like an oasis in the desert.

Fairways are mostly very lush but of course you will find a few thin areas, the rough is thick and can be penal in places. Tee boxes are in very nice shape and the bunkers looked okay but I managed to play 18 holes without visiting a single one. There appear to be some new water/creek features around holes 14 and the tee box on 15, but perhaps I'm just misremembering after some time has passed since my last round.

Greens were in very nice shape and rolled pure all day. Speeds were a bit above medium-fast and held shots really well. There are a lot of false fronts and severe drop-offs on some of the greens, like on 10 and the right side of 16, but the one that really got me was back of hole 8. After hitting a great draw down the hill into the middle of the fairway, I thought I hit a great wedge just by the pin and then it hit that back slope and rolled all the way out. Argh!

We had cart service a few times on the hot afternoon and the carts and driving range area are all in very good shape. No GPS on the carts is a bit surprising considering how tough this course would be if you weren't that familiar with it, but I guess people just manage.

Overall it was a really fun, hot day out at Tierra Rejada and I was quite pleased despite a rough front nine to shoot my best-ever round there. It's a pretty unique track and currently it won't disappoint if you're looking for a fun challenge.

Rode the Blues this morning 6/28/2021 around 7:40am as a single playing through a single on 4, 2some on 5 and a 3 some on 10. Total POP was 2 hrs 45 minutes with the temps already warming up as it got hot late morning. Thanks to Jacob at Tierra Rejada getting me right out within 2 minutes of check-in. Did not use the putting green or range but they have a nice facility here.

Last review was spot on I saw several maintenance guys today(filling section of green in on 9 front right, working on both bunkers in 10 fairway and filling in back section of green on #14). All were courteous, saw that I was hitting and then went back to work).

I was pretty impressed with the overall conditions of the course.

There is a red maintenance alert on the greens that can probably be changed to yellow. Look likes small tines a week or so ago that really did not effect the roll of the ball. Greens were slower than normal but held shots very well and rolled decently. Rated 7/10

Fairways were mostly green and semi-lush with some wet spots here and there and a couple dry spots but overall played really nicely. Rated 7/10

Some of the blue tees are sloped and need leveling but the teeing grounds themselves were lush and green. Rated 6.5/10

Was in greenside bunker on 16 that had super soft beach sand that was easy to get out of. I know they put a lot of new sand in some of the bunkers and I can see some fried eggs with the amount of sand in a few bunkers I walked by. Rakes provided in all the bunkers. Rated 7.5/10

Rough lining the fairways can be lush and mostly green with a few spots that are dry. Rated 7/10.

The front nine and back nine are two different courses. I like coming here challenging myself with tee shots like 3, 8 and 18 where you have to thread the needle and hit some golf shots(i did on 18 but not so much on 3 and 8 lol). I would recommend Tierra Rejada right now.

Not going lie, and will start this out with it...I will be back to the course despite the following review simply because I grew up playing this course and it's 5 minutes from my house.

Played monday 6/21, had an 0600 tee time. Got there a little early and the nice lady in the pro-shop said we could go out whenever we were ready (we were a 2-some). We headed out around 545 or so, with the intent of flying around. On hole 6, the sprinklers were on over the entire back half of the hole (from about 225 and in), and given that this is one of the shorter holes on the course it pretty much rendered the hole unplayable. On hole 7, there was a full maintenance crew working on the green, so we decided to skip it thinking we could get ahead of the workers and stay out of their way. Right after teeing off on hole 8, the maintenance guy speeds past us and goes for the green. He waited until I hit into the green and then proceeded to move the cup (after I had hit into the green) and do a hand punch (aerification) of about half the green while we're standing there waiting to finish out the hole. Move on to 9 - no problem because the maintenance guy jumped us and went to 10. We did see a crew doing some major work on 13 at this point, figured it'd be done by the time we get there (we were first out for the day). Catch up to him again on 11 and he's moving the flag on the green, again. We play out the hole hoping it gives him enough time to go hit number 12. Tee on on 12 (par 5) and by the time we get to the 2nd shot, there is no flag on the green, they're mowing and moving the pin again. Get to 13 and it plays as normal hole with the sole exception that the green had been fully punched. Couldn't even finish the rest of the course because every hole was covered in plugs from being punched (which btw there was zero notification on the course website when I booked it last week, and I don't believe there was any price reduction as a result either) and did not have a flag. The grounds crew was on hole 14 - and there were many people behind us. Couple groups were catching up quick too, so I can only imagine that they weren't able to finish either.

Course conditions themselves were mediocre at best. Have seen it in much better shape and have seen it in worse shape. Fairways were thin (esp. no. 1 and 16). Bunkers were either soft and fluffy (no 10 was very nice) or hardpan concrete like...just depended which one you were in. Like I said at the beginning, I'll definitely be back but they definitely need to work on course management and maintenance management here.

Teed off at TR as a threesome on Monday, 2/1/20, at 10:40am. Pace of play was a bit sluggish at 4.5 hours. We waited on every shot. The weather was perfect - mid to upper 60's and no wind. The greens were the best part of the golf course. They were a little firm, holding some shots and rejecting others. No too many ball marks. They rolled medium fast, and were mostly smooth with an occasional bump or two. Bunkers around the greens were in very nice shape. The rest of the course is in fair condition. The teeboxes were pretty chewed up with many hard pan areas. The fairways are VERY thin and quite hard. They painted the fairways green. But underneath that paint it is brown and rock hard. You got lots of roll on running shots. The areas around the greens were also extremely thin and tight, with little-to-no grass under your ball. It was very difficult making good chip shots around the green. With all the slopes on this course and with the hard pan fairways, your ball could roll out of bounds or back 50 yards from where it landed. Personally, I don't care for playing in such hard pan conditions. I won't play here again until the spring, when the turf grows back.

Played TR on Monday 12/29/20 with a 11:30 tee time. Pace of play was 4:40. We were able to finish with plenty of light. Tierra Rejada is in good shape. When you first drive in to the course parking area you notice that the fairways are pretty green. They were VERY playable with good lies all around. Just some minimal areas that were thin or bare. I never had a bad lie in the fairways. Tee boxes were a problem. Many of them were beat up and a few were quite long and uncut. We played the maroon tees (equivalent to the white tees) and on numerous holes they were grouped together with the tees in front of them. So some holes played shorter than normal. They replaced all of the sand in the fairway and greenside bunkers earlier in the year. So they were in good shape, with plenty of soft sand. Although they had a lot of rain the day before, the greens were actually fairly fast, especially downhill. They rolled nicely. You could see some tiny holes on many of the greens, but this did not affect the roll at all. The soft greens held shots nicely. On the very short par 3 seventeenth hole there were many unhealed ball marks which could be a problem if they were in your putting line. These greens can be difficult to read if you simply look at the slope of the greens themselves. The most important consideration is what is the slope of the mountain or hill that is influencing a particular green. Many times a downhill put (the green is sloping down) putted like an uphill putt due to the surrounding mountain slope, and vice versa on uphill putts. Until I became aware of this, I sent several "uphill" putts well past the pin. TR is a challenging course. I always enjoy playing here. I do recommend it.

Played 10-12-20 afternoon with Mike, Rob, and Sal getting around the course in a little over 4 1/2 hours with some minor waiting. Tee boxes had decent coverage for the most part with some thin spots and divot damage on par threes. Fairways were mostly in nice shape with good lies and decent rollout, but there were a few thin spots. Rough for the most part was not to penal, but there were some areas of very thick grass that had you searching for the ball. Bunkers have been redone and were in really good shape with nice white sand. Greens were still healing from being punched so they were slow and bumpy, getting worse on the back nine. They need a little more time to fill in and smooth out. Fun day of golf with good company.

Was lucky enough to get invited by Johnny to play a fun round on Monday 10/12/20 at Tierra Rejada. It was a blast to play with the GK guys, as usual really fun group. Course was in nice shape, greens seemed to have been punched a couple weeks before with some lumpy bumpies here and there. Fairways were nice, tee boxes nice, sand seemed new and very soft. There was one pretty big issue on 17 green, a big bald spot on the back only about 8 feet from the pin. Everyone at the course was nice as always and it was a beautiful day of golf with buddies...much needed, thank you Johnny!

Out with GK Gurus at Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark Monday. Always great to tee it up with GKers and it’s been a long time since I played Tierra Rejada. Came out to check out the extensive bunker renovation. If you ever played Tierra Rejada you know how loaded the golf course is with bunkers. What a massive improvement. The bunkers all contain beautiful white sand that is not too soft and plays fantastic. I know, I hit 5 bunkers during my round – LOL. Plus they groomed all the bunker edges and even removed some fairways bunkers replacing them with grass bunkers. Just a super job. If you have not played Tierra Rejada since this improvement go check it out.

We teed off at 1:00pm and got around in about 4 hours. Tee times spaced 10 minutes apart. They have limited carts and request players share a cart. I don’t know if shared carts is required to ride, forgot to ask. This is NOT a walking golf course but any stretch of the imagination.

Overall playing conditions are good but would be much better if the greens were in better shape. The greens surprising appeared to need more time to heal from a dryject aeration done two weeks ago and unfortunately had a lot ball marks we were fixing. Give the greens another week or two and they should be vastly improved. Bunkers immaculate. Tee boxes in good shape although given the heavy amount of play the par 3 boxes had a lot of divot damage at times. Fairways mostly lush at times thin but provided full coverage. Rough was in better shape mostly lush especially green side.

The layout is underrated in terms of difficulty. It’s very demanding off the tee and you need to know how to hit of an uneven lie from the fairways and rough. Bunkers guard all the greens well and pitching the ball is no picnic. The greens especially on the front nine are tricky to read with many undulations. Shocking to me see a USGA rating from the blue tees 70.9/129 – par 72/6557. It’s a fun layout with many great views and interesting holes. Check out the photos I posted.

Great day of golf. Recommended. Looking forward to my next round out there.

Tierra Rejada with the GK Guru group, playing with Sal, Ron and Mike - good times! It was a hot day so it was vital to have the drinks at the ready, but it was great to see some of the water fountains working and nice touches like rakes in the bunkers.

TR is a very unique course - if you've played it, then you know. Jekyll and Hyde from the front nine to the back, but always fun and a massive test of accuracy and guts. There's no backing down from some of the long carries and tough angles on the front nine, while the back nine is much more traditional but no less penal of mistakes.

The course visually looks great right now. The fairways are nice and green and most of the lies were quite good. A few thin spots here and there which made some shots a little dicey, especially around the greens, but overall no major complaints. The new bunkers were looking and playing very nicely - the white fluffy stuff currently that every golfer wants to see.

Unfortunately the greens still were showing some signs of bumpiness and slow speeds after recent punching. They were much better on the front nine than on the back. A few too many ball marks made putting an adventure and it was difficult to really keep things on line. As others have said, they should be much better in a few weeks. Tee boxes were fine in some places, but a few of them were chewed up pretty badly.

POP rolled along nicely all afternoon and we didn't have any other difficulties getting through the round in prompt fashion. Carts are quite nice but don't have any GPS, which would probably be a nice addition at a place like this.

Still a great day all around and I will always love coming back to Tierra Rejada to see where my game has progressed or regressed. There's simply no hiding from it here.
