During renovation, the Bayonet/BlackHorse course is playing Bayonet front 9 and Blackhorse back 9. See the Bayonet site for review/ratings/pictures of the front 9. The Blackhorse back 9 is much wider open that the Bayonet front 9. It also plays much longer. We're talking a 600+ yard par 5. I liked the Blackhorse 9 much better than the Bayonet 9. The holes had more character, more fairway undulation, more recoverability to them. I also tend to spray the ball, so the wide open layout works better for me than the narrow tree-lined fairways of Bayonet. The greens were large, fast, and tricky. Did I mention FAST! I've never putted faster greens than on Bayonet/Blackhorse! It was like putting downhill on a pool table. I couldn't get an approach shot to hold, but I'm sure that players with much better skills than I would be successful. This is a very difficult layout. I would recommend it highly for players with pretty serious skills wanting to test themselves. It's a bit much for players with my marginal abilities. Beautiful setting, with nice views of the Monterey Bay in the background from several tees on the Blackhorse 9.

played 6/21/08, they currently have a combined 18 holes consisting of bayonet's front 9, and the new back nine of black horse.
the back nine of black horse was a welcome break from the throttling i got from the tight fairways on bayonet's front nine...
i never played the original, so can't say how it compares now, but the new 9 is visually great. lots of elevation changes, contoured fairways and greens, but generally plenty of room off the tee. fancy bunkers with scalloped edges for eye candy i guess. greens are new, hard like granite, but like bayonet not rolling particularly fast.

they are also building out the place, putting in condos (timeshares and resort rooms), so i'd expect them to jack the rates when they're done.

also a new range, on grass, with plenty of targets and room to hit driver, along with a new putting green that is just as crazily sloped as the old one.
