Monthly update for Laguna Seca. Course remains in almost identical condition as my September review. The only real difference would be the fairways are starting to show a little more brown. This should improve once we get some rain. I've been playing on Sundays (best part of football season) and pace of play has improved a bit. POP was just under 4 hours yesterday. The other major change is the head pro has left. Dave kept the daily operation at Laguna Seca running perfectly smooth. It'll be interesting to see what happens down the road.

I get out to Laguna Seca about 3-4 times a month. Conditions have remained steady all summer. Green are decent with a few having a couple of bumps here and there but overall not bad. Greens are tricky at Laguna Seca. They look girly tame but have some sneaky wicked breaks.

Fairways have some brown spots in them but are mostly playable and fine. Tee boxes are average and sand traps are either excellent or very poor. There's no in between.

They have put in new balls in play at the range (grass hitting surface).

Covid: masks required in the pro shop, pay at a table that is 10' away from person at the counter. No flags in on the practice putting green, no sand bottles in the single rider carts, foam noodle in the cups.

Rode the Blues (6013/69.6/129) in 3H, 45M early afternoon. Played as a 2some on the front, then as a 3some on the back. Breezy, sunny and around 70 made for great golfing conditions. RTJ Jr/Sr. design. For those of you in So Cal familiar with Elkins Ranch, this is the Monterey version of Elkins. Par 71, not very long with plenty of holes that curve surrounded by large, mature trees. Constantly up/down hills. You either started with an elevated tee shot or ended with an approach shot up to a very raised green on almost every hole. Tees mediocre, but they were doing a good job of filling in divots. Fairways and rough a mixture of grasses. Much more thin than lush, but decent coverage throughout. Rough not much higher than the fairways. Sand traps were poor. Not well maintained and did not look like they were regularly raked. Greens were excellent. They were recently top dressed, which did not affect play. Smooth, medium fast and very receptive to full irons shots. Basic carts did not have GPS. No on course services. Round was prepaid, so quick efficient check-in. GN Hot Deal price was $56 + fees, I used a 30% off voucher that made it more reasonable. Not worth full rack rate with just okay playing conditions IMO. However, this is a very fun course to play. Recommended, but not at full price.

I played Laguna Seca a couple of times over the past weekend. This is always one of my favorite layouts in the peninsula with all of the elevation changes throughout the entire track. Conditions are always average at Laguna Seca and this weekend was no exception.

Greens can always be a mystery here but this weekend, they were consistent. Greens rolled at a medium pace that was consistent throughout the course. Naturally downhill putts were very fast but everything else was manageable. Greens at Laguna Seca are sneaky. They don’t look intimidating (a la Blackhorse & Spanish Bay) but they can reach up and bite you big if you don’t pay close attention.

I will say that on Sunday afternoon there were a TON of unrepaired ball marks on the greens. I was routinely fixing 5+ pitch marks per green and that was only covering a small percentage of them.

Tee boxes had good lush coverage but some could use an overall and releveling. Fairways were in average condition. Decent overall coverage with no real major thin areas. Sand traps weren’t bad. The second day I played, I was in 5 bunkers and saved par twice from the sand which is good for me so the traps can’t be that bad.

Pace of Play… Well it was a three day holiday weekend on the peninsula with perfect weather and only half of the courses open. Enough said. Though, I’ve seen it a whole lot worse here.

Played Laguna Seca this afternoon and the weather was actually overcast and chilly. This is one of my favorite layouts with some elevation changes throughout the entire course. There is a good mixture of fun grip it and rip it holes along with tough challenging ones.

Conditions are a bit less than ideal right now. Greens were smooth but rolling at a slow pace. Most greens are double tiered but usually pretty predictable.

Fairways had a number of thin spots throughout the course. Overall coverage on the fairways was decent but definitely winter thin. Tee boxes had a number of divots however they had a few of the tee boxes closed for complete reseed, so they are obviously working on improving the conditions.

Sand boxes were 50/50. I was in a lot of bunkers today and got a thorough sampling the of the sand. Some were very nice but at least 50-60% of them were riddled with gravel/pebbles.

The skirt areas around the greens were in great shape. Customers service is always good. Nothing over the top with valet parking but greatly friendly service.

Played Sunday at around Noon teeing off as a single and eventually ending up as a foursome. After my morning mountain bike ride, Laguna Seca was the perfect track to go out and enjoy the beautiful weather without spending a fortune or being backed up for hours. Front 9 was wide open then it started to back up a bit on the backside. Still POP was just over 3 hours.

Last time here I posted that there are some thin spots in the fairway but I didn't hit any. Well my opening tee shot (one of the better ones of the day) landed in a thin, dry, patchy dirt area of the fairway. A pain to hit from for sure. After that, I managed good lies in the fairway. Sandtraps continue to impress me, big time. Tee boxes were a bit chewed up but good enough for the entry price.

Greens were in great shape rolling at a medium-slow pace. At least that's what rated them at. One of the guys I ended up joining on the back nine thought the greens were rolling fast.


All in all Laguna Seca is fun track with decent conditions.

I played today using a last-minute GolfNow Hot Deal. I wasn't planning to play today but I just couldn't pass up another affordable course so close to where I'm staying.

I played today using a last-minute GolfNow Hot Deal. I wasn't planning to play today but I just couldn't pass up another affordable course so close to where I'm staying.

My tee time was 7:52am. I was relieved to see that I would be going out just in front of a large tournament. I was paired with a couple of local guys who were a lot of fun to play with.

I knew right away that I was going to enjoy this course. I could see from the first tee that it was in very good condition. The fairways were lush and lined with many large oak trees. The balls sat up so high I had none of the trouble that I had yesterday at Blackhorse. The front nine is relatively wide and flat compared to the back which had hills, a couple of blind shots and doglegs. There was one hole that had two carries over water. That was actually my favorite hole. I had to plan my shots well and fortunately everything went as planned.

The tee boxes were almost all level and only the par 3s had noticeable damage. There are lots of bunkers here and by some miracle I avoided them all. From what I could see the sand look pretty good.

The greens were a pleasure. They were a little bit on the slow side but were smooth, rolled true and held shots well. A big plus was there were no unrepaired ball marks!

POP was good. We waited only a couple minutes here and there, finishing in exactly 4 hours. I like this course so much. It's a nice straightforward, no frills course that I will absolutely play again next time I'm in the area. Definitely recommended.

After a couple of days of cycling and kayaking it was time to head out to the course and play with the new GK App! Sundays during football season can be a great time to play golf on the peninsula. I tee'd off at about 11:30am which was the perfect gap. The morning crowd was already on the back nine and the afternoon folks hadn't arrived yet. I had clear sailing until the 15th when I ran into a foursome who refused to let me by even though I was on the tee box with them for 4 holes! Still it was a 3 hour round even with the delay.

Conditions are nice right now at Laguna Seca. Greens were soft and rolled smooth for the most part. there were a few pitch marks here and there but nothing too bad. Fairways were the best I've seem them in years. I noticed a few thin areas as I was driving but i had excellent lies and hitting surface on all of my shots.

I was in three sand traps and two were excellent and one was below average having thin, semi-hard dirt.

As I've mentioned before, Laguna Seca is a super fun track. Add in the solid conditions right now and it's a no brainer. It was also the perfect course for me to play around with the new GK App and post some live photo's while playing.

I finished my bike ride and had a few hours to kill. I was right around the corner from Laguna Seca and decided to play a few holes. The place can get very crowded so I wasn't sure how many holes I was going to get in. To my surprise I manage to zip around in a bit under 3.5 hrs.

I always enjoy the layout her but don't play it as often anymore due to hit & miss conditions, slow play and increased prices. I have to say that conditions are great right now. Greens are healthy with not a bare spot to be found anywhere. They were void of pitch marks and rolled at a medium- slow speed. As I've mentioned before the greens are sneaky tough here. They don't look treacherous but can reach up and bite you if you're not paying attention.

Fairways were probably the best I've ever seen them. Very lush and a pleasure to hit from. There were still a few thin/bare spots scattered here and there but overall the fairways are in great shape.

High quality sand in the traps. And good coverage on all but one tee box.

As mentioned before, Laguna Seca has a ton of elevation changes throughout the entire course that makes this place a blast to play. Add in the current conditions with a sub 3.5 HR round with the afternoon rate and it's a good choice on the peninsula.
