Excellent course that can be very tough when the wind blows, as it did when I played there. Greens are firm, fast, and fair. If you live within 3 hours of here, you should make the trip.

I just cannot say enough great things about this course. I continue to return and have never been disappointed. If you are in the area and cannot get a round in at Monarch Dunes...I feel sorry for you. Only negative...Saturday and no cart service on the course.

played this course last year the week I also played Cypress Ridge, monarch is an outstanding course , thoughtful design with lots of slope, elevation changes and framed by water and giant eucalyptus trees...very good, fast greens that were consistent from hole to hole, I would have to say a 'must play' if youre in the central coast area

Played two days here 12/27 and 28. Course is about 2 years old. Severely contoured greens and target golf off the tees make this a demanding course. The greens rolled like an 11 and were very firm. Fairways were thin but playable and the sand was not compacted. Lots of water and some blind shots make you think before you hit. Service was excellent. Would definitely go back in warmer weather.

We played this course on Tuesday, 10-9 on our first annual golf and wine trip to central California. We also played Cypress Ridge, Hunter Ridge Ranch, and La Purisima (see those reviews). We were told that the greens were running a 13 on the Stimpmeter, and I believe 'em. Fastest greens I've ever played by quite a margin, but they seemed to roll true. Now I know what the pros putt on. The course was in great shape, but the newness of the fairways means you'll have a lot of tight lies. We walked this one, and if you don't know the course you'll get lost, because signage is only on the cart path. Lots of up and down with a number of blind shots, which leave you scratching your head before, and after, the shot. The staff was friendly and we had a good time. We'll probably keep this one in next year's rotation, especially now that we know the course.

WOW. Great challenge! Tough Tough course. The greens are insane (glass). Tried to picture a Scotish Links type atmosphere but the tons of houses and constant hammering and tractors driving were quite distracting. Young course, but good times.

Love this course! Played it on 9/30 in absolutely perfect weather conditions. It's been a year since I played here and it is just as good as I remember. Extremely fast greens that don't hold, but they are very true and smooth as glass. Fairways are a little thin in spots, especially on the front. You must play the front of the green on every hole if you want to stay on. I think the layout is excellent and the staff was very friendly.

What a gem! Played here a year ago and loved it. Made the drive up to try it again, loved it even more! Nothing to be critical about. The greens are perhaps too firm, but the course is young, so time will handle that aspect. This is a "must play: anytime I visit the central coast!

Played this morning 7:30 single, two guys walking in front of me that waived me through by the 5th hole. Had the rest of the course to my self, Beautiful day on the central coast. I have played here several times since it has opened and I have to say that the conditions right now are incredible. This course is coming in very well, greens are always gonna be hard and fast but thats ok with the links style golf here. The fairways are very lush and the native grass and rough are making this course look and feel like your in Scotland. Cant say how happy I am to see the conditions here improve each month. I would recommend playing fairly early to avoid the wind that whips up around here. Nice staff, all around very good.

played sun 7/15. what a beautiful, easy on the eyes, course. was a tough course, greens were moderately fast and smooth, and impossible to read. definitely need some local knowledge if playing for the first time, in terms of landing areas and green approaches. steady 10-15 mph wind. 1st hole is a monster right off the bat. i don't think i could play this course often... kinda hard... would wear me out. but it's gorgeous and in great shape.

Played the course for the first time on 6/8. The greens were down right un fair (apparently a 10 put was recorded) but it was a thrill (all pin locations were simalar to the open). We called to play there at 3pm and were told to come on down, when we got there we were told we couldnt play the owner was having a private golf tournament@ 5:30. The person in the shope was very rude and seemed bothered by our presence (apparently he feels they have all the buisness they need). Finally he let us out and told us to be finished with #7 by 5:00 or we would have to skip to #10. Well we finshed 9 by 5:00 and headed into the pro shop Via the resturaunt and the same person said "we're closed, turned off the lights, locked the door and left us in the dark to head back to the resturaunt. Other than that the marshalls were great and very freindly so was the staff in the resturaunt. This is for sure a course to play but bring an extra putter, you may wear out your first.

Second time I have played this course (5/22) and the next time I'm up in central cal I well play it again. Greens are fast and big on this links course. You MUST land the ball short of the hole. Fun to play and staff was great.

This is a strong track that will benefit from another 3-4 years of maturing. Its youth is currently its achilles heel, but nothing some sunlight and a few months of warmer weather wouldn't cure. There was no wind when I played, but suspect tackling from the tips in a 10-15 mph breeze would have a dramatic impact. The greens are simply devilish. Unfortunately for me, it took 3 doubles on the front to realize that you can't fire at most pins unless you're really familiar with the each green. There's too much undulation and speed to recover if you've short-sided yourself. The back 9 score reflected that simply aiming for the center was the way to go. It's hard to say whether or not the course was worthy of a "Top 10 New Courses" rating, but it's certainly worthy of a drive and greens fee.

Played this wonderful course again on the 10th and my comments still reflect that of my own further down in an earlier review.

Awesome course that is in great shape. Fairways are still a bit thin, but I suspsect they will fill in by summer's end. Wonderful people there too.

Course demands creative approaches, many times running up on.

Extremely nice staff, starter let us go 45 mins early also gave us range balls for free(I don't know if they were included in the price or not)Course was very different from what I am used to playing. Lots of mounds or dunes as they would call them and super-fast greens. Difficult to make a ball mark with any type of shot. Greens were also two tiered. This one of those courses that you have to play a couple of times to get the hang of it. Will definitely play again. P.S. That jocko's is great place to get a steak!

Customer Service in all area's is exceptional. If you live in the area the Royals Reward program is a great value. Check it out on their web page monarchdunes.com Twilight fee's during the week is $21, $28 on the weekends. The golf course will test every area of your game, especially your short game. I suggest you pay attention to pin placements as you have options where to hit your shots. Be prepared for lighting fast greens!

Great experience overall. Very polite, helpful staff inside. Outside staff left something to be desired. Weren't helpful, didn't get a cart ready for us, didn't help us with our clubs (before or after round), and seemed more intent to talk amongst themselves.

Great, well-designed course. Someone knew what they were doing.

Splendid. Just a splendid course. Never played a true links course, but I would have to surmise that this as as close as you'll find in the States. Should you try to fly your ball to the hole and hope it checks up, you're in for a long day. You HAVE to be creative in all your approaches. The problem lies in that you'll have to play the course at least a few times to really know how far to carry your approaches, to where, and how best to take advantage of the undulations. #11 serves as a good example; about 200 from the tips, downhill. Carry your ball about 150, to the right side, and let it feed to the green. #9, if cut front, paly to the right side on your approach and let the green naturally run it to the left, to the pin.

The fairways are still a bit thin. Some of this is due in part to the cold weather Cali's had of late. It will take a good 3 years before they fill in and mat.

Personnel are very polite. Superb course.

One of my new favorites...worthy of its recent accolades. Wind will always be a factor on the course. I can't help but feel the overall experience will be greatly diminished as the empty home lots are replaced by rooflines and patio furniture.

Played on 11/06 with a 9:30 am tee time. We were able to finish in just under 4 1/2 hours. Greens were rock hard and roll true. Not used to fast greens. I can still see punch marks from aerations on the green. But it does not affect play. I really liked the layout of the course. Course can get difficult when wind comes up. Course is a little difficult to walk. Some holes are a little bit of a walk from the green to the next tee.

First time I've played here! What a positive experience. The course was better than I expected, very interesting, nice variety of holes, good condition. Greens require you to be on the correct side of the hole, otherwise tough to 2 putt or get up and down. I suspect once the homes are in, the course will have a different feel, but for now, it really is a great place to to tee it up!

One word, Rockhardgreens. Very fast with lots of slope. course is doing great, pace of play was good on a fairly crowded afternoon. Try to avoid the natural mounds off the fairway and greenside, most are heavy rough with verticle lips.. big trouble. Had a good front nine with almost two hole in ones on #8 and one on the back on #11. Both hit the pin on the bounce, birdied 8 and three putted for bogey on #11.

If you like smooth hard fast greens, play Monarch Dunes. I live in the area that has quality golf courses and this is my favorite. What's fun about this course is the options you have hitting into the greens. You can run your shot up or aim for slopes on the green and let your ball filter towards the hole. Pay special attention to pin placements. Check out their Royal Rewards program for discounted green fees or EZlinks.com for tee times and specials .

Went out mid-day Saturday. Would have been a threesome, but the other two didn't show, so I was on my own. The starter warned me the greens wouldn't hold, and he was right. I don't know what PGA-level greens are like, but I'm guessing they pretty darn similar. I really enjoyed the pace of play on my round until I caught the twosome in front of me. My front nine took under 1:30. The marshall suggested that since no one was behind me, I should play around, try some extra shots, work on my putting on the greens, etc. Really nice staff. The course seemed to be in really fantastic shape. Some of the blind shots were a challenge, as the photocopied layout wasn't as accurate as I'd have liked (one hole shows a split fairway with rough where there is actually fairway), but it was okay. On a couple of holes you just have to pay attention to the 150 marker pole looking pretty close and realizing it's a short par 4 before your mistakenly crank away with your driver--like the ninth hole. It could definitely benefit from GPS or a good yardage book, but now I'm being picky.

This is the newest course (January 2006) in the Central Coast. It's "across the road" from BlackLake in Nipomo. The back nine is loaded with dunes (hence the name)...and requires some know-how when it comes to target golf.
The front nine lets you stretch your drives.
All the greens are fast and true. Very, very short grass on the greens, which leads to some not-so-pretty divots.
The surroundings are beautiful. You feel like you're playing somewhere special on all 18 holes.
At 10 a.m. I went out as a single (ahead of a group of 12). Caught up with a twosome at the 4th hole, and we hooked up the rest of the way. Nobody in front of us for about 10 holes!
I drive up to San Luis Obispo every two months to visit my grandkids, and play various courses in the Central Coast. Now, Monarch Dunes is on my must-play list every trip.

Played twice: once a week after opening and once in mid-May. Now that carts are allowed to cross fairways, pace of play will pick up. Staff is remarkable, prices are a little high for the area but a real bargain when compared to Southern or Northern California. It's all about the greens - firm (hard) but fair; very speedy; roll true but breaks are incredibly subtle many times. Keep the ball below the hole or pay dearly on the score card. Some blind shots make the course almost unfair until you've played it a couple of times and can remember where to aim.

Teed off late afternoon on Jul 2. Well, I was really looking forward to playing this course b/c of some of the positive comments on this board, and my review will consist of The Good, The Bad, and The Neutral. First, The Good: This is a top notch facility - from the parking lot, to the clubhouse and the range. It's big, clean and best of all, it has the benefit of a superior climate. Cool ocean breezes prevail among gently rolling hills. Plus, it's fairly remote - another plus. The conditioning is fantastic - from the tee boxes to the greens, it's all top notch. The greens were terrific; when we were getting ready to tee off, a couple of regulars warned us that the greens weren't receptive, i.e., be prepared to see some nice iron shots bounce off. Well, they obviously haven't played rock-hard greens (see Angeles National in LA County) because we found these greens to be very fair and very, very smooth. The rough was fair and manageable, and the bunkers actually had plenty of sand in them. The superintendent should be proud of his efforts here. Now for The Bad: It's a young facility, but they've either got to put GPS in the carts or at least sell a yardage book that shows the course layout. This is a tough course with a lot of blind shots, and it was incredibly frustrating to have no idea as to where to hit the ball. It was basically hit and hope for much of the round. I was reduced to taking the opposite approach: if I felt it was way left, it was actually close to the hole, and if I felt I hit it stiff, it was way left. You get the picture. No GPS, no hole diagram on the cheap paper scorecard, and no hole diagram on the tee boxes. The starter did try to help - he gave us what appeared to be a very hard to read 20th generation xerox copy of the real estate developer's map of home lots...with the hole diagrams sketched in there. Nice. As for yardages, some, but not all, sprinkler heads had yardages on them. This is a course that has a lot of elevation changes and blind shots, so yardage and direction are critical. Hopefully, there will be a little more help the next time we play here. Continuing with the BAD...the houses. They ring the course and in many instances, are right on top of you. I mean, there were a few holes where if the residents all decided to sit on their patio at the same time, you'd have a PGA gallery. Jesus. On a couple of tee boxes, we were watching TV with the residents and could see what was in the fridge. Worst - the homes weren't even that attractive. The developers really crammed the homes together - there's a sliver of sunlight between these lot lines. On the backside, we finished playing a par 3, and then watched a couple guys leave the patio in their flip flops, grab a couple of clubs, and then tee off behind us. The time to play this place is NOW because once everyone moves in, it's gonna be like an LA muni. Lastly, the NEUTRAL: The course layout is slightly above average. A lot of blind shots. The climate and what remains of the trees gives this place a good feel, but they cleared so many trees that what remains feels almost artificial. The strategy and hole designs are, in my view, fairly pedestrian. What makes the course more interesting though are the green complexes. Terrific undulations and chipping areas. Very challenging and fair too. Conclusion: We paid $57 to ride - it's a good value for that price, but I can't help but feel our Calif coastline deserved better because when you drive up here, you feel this region could be really special, and then when you see what the developer has done to a great piece of land...well, it is pretty sad. I'd play here again though based on the course conditioning.

PLayed in a tourney on 6-15, wonderful staff, very accomidating and first class. The course was fast and dry in good condition and a heck of a lot of wind today. Greens are fast but true, make sure you get on the right side of these greens or your in for a long day of putting. They are allowing carts in the fairways now, not sure I like it due to it taking a lot of lushness away from the fairways. This course is not difficult to walk, and I would recommend you walk just to get a good feel of this great links style course.

Played on Thursday 5/25 with a 2:00 tee time (twilight). We were able to play all 18 holes in about 4 1/2 hours (walking). Course is still cart path only until the fairways mature. We really enjoyed playing the course. The course requires precision shot making on quite a few holes with water on about 8 or 9 holes. We played on a windy day and thus it got a little dusty on some of the holes because of all the construction of homes being built around the course at this time. The driving range was open. The greens were really nice and roll true. The fairways looked like the greens I'm used to on municipal courses back home. Will definitely be back again to play some more rounds!

played on Friday morning, got on no problem, staff was very good all around. Played the front nine alone with no waiting. Course is very good right now greens are not as fast as a few weeks ago but still deadly if you dont place it in the right spot. Course is very fair but takes a few times to learn where to hit the ball and save strokes. Anything off the greens and in the ruff spells serious trouble. I love this course and cant wait till the summer for the greens to mature.

Played on Easter Sunday, April 16, as a two-some (walking) and finished in 4 hours after playing through one slow four-some. The course is still cart-path-only, so despite the rolling terrain it's better to walk - less time back and forth to the cart for clubs. Only gripe is that it's impossible to refill divots with mix without a cart, so the fairways and some tee boxes are getting hacked up a bit. The layout is beautiful, though, and very challenging - especially on the greens. They're firm, so it's hard to hold a shot. They have tons of subtle and not-so-subtle breaks and mounds and undulations. They putt perfectly true, though, if you can figure out the break. I've played here twice since the course opened and over two rounds I've seen a beverage cart twice on the course. That needs to change, but otherwise go play this outstanding track before all the houses get built around it.

Played on 4-15 with a break in the weather around here. This course is fantastic from tee to green. Fairways are perfect, greens are very hard and fast which means your approach shots must be placed in the proper location or you can easily three putt. I love this new course. The contours of the fairways and bunkers are unlike anything I have ever seen at a golf course. pace of play was terrific, finished round in less than 41/2 hourse with no rushing.

This is a great new course. Nice layout with very large greens. Good looking bunkers and plenty of water. A course that you need to play a few times to shooot low and you will want to re-play it. A nice walk except for the huge distance between greens and tees. Play it now before the houses get built for it will certainly deminish the playblity when its framed with stucco. The course plays long from the tips with plenty of shot making required to shoot low. A few spectacular holes and only a couple of average holes. Number 10 is a beast - By far the best new course in years and one of the most fun in Central CA. It plays with some great links style holes where you NEED to play with the wind. Go play it - you'll love it.

Course opened New Year's Day...not yet rated. But what a winner! It's the newest addition to the Central Coast...near BlackLake and Cypress Ridge. Greens are true, fairways full of grass-covered dunes, par 3s are reachable. Good value for your buck (intro prices are in effect thru March. The down-side: they're constructing hundreds of new homes in and around the course. A bit noisy, but not yet crowded.

The wait is over. This course has been open for only seven days now and was definitely worth the hype. True links style course with many natural contours and bunkering surrounding the greens and fairways. Water comes into play on several holes, especially #4 which is a dog leg right par 5 with water on the right and around the elevated green. #8 is a long downhill par three with water in front and a elevated green also, very tough green. All of the par 5's on this course play tough even though some are not very long. Dont be fooled by the yardage on the par three's, very tough due to the bunkering and mounds. #10 is a beast, with a split fairway and long second shot to a up hill green. Overall our group was very pleased with this wonderful new course and will be back for sure. USGA is coming later this month to rate the course and to place the yardage markers on the sprinkler heads which will help. Great experience all around, plus the grill is superb. come and play this thinking man's course for sure.
