Played yesterday around 3PM. Not as crowded; considering the weather was fantastic. Finished 18 but skipped two holes (par 3s) to jump ahead. Thankfully the groups were amenable to that and we were off to the races.

Greens have healed nicely. A little bumpy they putted with medium speed. They were aerating the skirts of several greens but not an issue. Fairways are in good shape. Bunkers around the green complexes are well stocked. Can't say much for fairway bunkers since I saw none. Tee boxes are flat and playable.

Pace of play was 3.5 hours for 16 holes -- once again we skipped 2 holes; both par 3s.

Overall happy with conditions and know with heat it will only improve. Play here again? Definitely. At $18.75 on GolfZing why wouldn't you if you can finish with the sun still high in the sky.

NOTE: ALERT WAS INACCURATE. IT HAD BEEN ONLY A WEEK OR SO SINCE AERATION, NOT SEPT 8, 9 AS REPORTED ON THIS SITE. Played with my daughter and her golf buddy from middle school. A beautiful day for golf! First time ever at the course. Only got to play the front 9 even though we started at 3 because of homework. No groups around us until about half way through (there was a high school match that started around 2 I think). Once we caught up, we had to wait a little, but not too much. Got done in under 2 hours, so that was nice. The reason we picked Rec Park 18 was because it was reported that El Dorado and Skylinks were having all or half of their greens aerated. I got the impression that the Rec Park aeration had been done a few weeks back. Nonetheless, the greens weren't that bad. They weren't too slow and wasn't as bumpy as it looked. Should be nice when the greens fully recover. As for the rest of the course, the fairways were okay. A few slightly bare spots but not horrible like the hard dirt shots you have to sometimes hit from at Victoria. We didn't like the tiny green of the par 3. They apparently alternate between two greens and got stuck with the obviously lesser of the two. We thought we were transported to Alondra's Par 3 course. The fairways were incredibly wide. Kind of nice after playing at Rio Hondo a few days ago. In the end, my daughter and I both agreed that it was a nice course, so we look forward to playing the rest of the course next time. We definitely still think Rio Hondo and Skylinks are in better shape and are more interesting, but, again, we only played the front 9. Other notes: I rode and the carts have GPS which was nice. The driving range has very few stalls. We've played at Rec Park 9 on a weekend before and wanted to practice before playing so we dropped by here, but no go. There were plenty of open stalls today but I wouldn't count on it on a busy day. It looks like there are nice areas for short game practice though. The young guy at the golf shop was very pleasant. We will be back.

I have always enjoyed playing Rec Park. My favorite Long Beach course. It's been a couple years since I last played here. I was disappointed with the general overall appearance of the course. The rough, which is being worked on is unplayable. Just horrible! Fairways are marginal. As previous review indicated, holes # 13, 14 & 18 was under construction, so temp forward tees being used.

They have removed some bunkers and a couple trees. The course just doesn't have the same feel or look??? Greens were the best part, and even they were below what I've come to expect from Rec Park. The only thing that was the same was the slow pace of play!

Tee off was at 5:45 am on Saturday, August 29. Finished at 9:45. Could have finished sooner if not for the group in front of us.

I wish someone would have written a review before I went out. Rec is working on several tee boxes on the back nine. 13, 14 and 18 were out of commission with temp tee boxes set up making this short course play even shorter.

Not sure how long this work will take or if they plan on working on the other tee boxes at some point. For now, my group will be avoiding Rec.

Played Friday. Greens are in fine shape; a little bumpy but quick and hold the line relatively well. Fairways in decent shape. Rough almost cut to the same height of the fairways but still punishing. Sand in bunkers is fluffy-ish. Tee boxes flat and lush.

Pace of play was quick. Conditions here are better than I expected. I suspect with the rain it should be a lot better as the days and weeks progress.

played here on a very busy Sat. 7-17. first thing is my mens club was supposed to play El Dorado but they over booked their mens club so they asked us to move our start time back to 1:00 which did not work for so we got moved over this this course. like the previous reviews mentioned the greens are horrible! Lots of areas of poorly laid sod patches and bare spots you could just not putt over and have chance of holding your line. Tee boxes were a mixed bag, some ok ,some unlevel and torn up. The fairways are patchy,short and you were left with some thin lies. bunkers did have decent soft sand. Pace of play was terrible at close to six hours. American golf manages this place and per the norm they book as many fivesomes as possible with tee times way too close together. Save your money and play elsewere.

Fairway's, traps and tees were OK with a rating of 5 to 5.5. The course has some of the worst greens I have played on this past year (many bare spots, very inconsistent, bump-it-y, bump, bump, bump. Its a real challenge to two-putt these greens. I recommend a lot of overspin for your putts to hold the line. Play on this course Thursday morning was fast. Our foursome finished just under 4 hours.

Played Saturday morning, 6/13/15, with my monthly club. Crazy weather day as we started in cold misty rain and finished in bright sunshine. Wind not too bad and really didn't affect shots. Course was jammed with 5somes as usual and we started about 1/2 hour late, with overall POP of around 5 hours. As noted in previous posts, 1/2 of many greens are in poor condition with aeration/sod repair/whatever, leaving a lot of soft/patchy/bare green to play over if you are on the wrong side. Unaffected areas were in good shape and rolled well at medium speed. Fairways and rough were OK, sand in the one greenside bunker I was in was fluffy and deep, tees were level and OK, with par 3 tees pretty banged up.

I'd swear that American Golf continues to reduce green size to save maintenance $$. Greens on holes 4, 5 (upper), 11, 15, 17, and 18 look smaller to me.

I am usually a tried and true fan of Big Rec, played twilight 8 Jun 15. At least a third of the greens have a half or third of their surface sandy, plugged or amateurishly sodded over. The staff is generally on top of things but that day they could care less about people jumping onto the course on #2 either without paying or going through the starter and slowing up we paying / following the rules golfers. Called for the Marshal to address the hole jumpers / non-payers which was a complete waste of our time and his. Sadly, if you want to play on decent greens stay away from Big Rec for a few months, which is a shame really. If you want to pay for your round or at least follow the procedure by checking in with a starter and play with others who do the same, stay away from twilight golf at Big Rec.
