Played out here today with a 1:30 tee time for $12 through TeeOff.com. Arrived a few minutes before 1:00 and the pro shop guy said a threesome was on the tee and if I was ready I should join them. So I went straight to the tee and teed off 30 minutes early. Our group was pretty slow and we lost sight of the people in front of us somewhere around the third hole. We finished in about 4:20 total. (Very little/no sense of urgency from two of the members of my foursome.) Gotta love the cool ocean breezes here, which often impacted shots this afternoon.

Conditions-wise, Shorecliffs is still Shorecliffs. Greens were decent. Grass was in good condition but lots of imperfections, so they were often bumpy. They ran about medium speed and accepted full shots very well. The two newer greens were tough to figure out. No. 7 looked fast and was fast. No. 10 looked fast but was slow. Fairways are mediocre. It's rare to get a really nice lie with cushion under the ball... mostly thin lies. Rough is a mixed bag, thick and gnarly in some areas and very spotty and thin in others. Tee boxes were poor... very beat up, not level. I wasn't in any bunkers but had one ball run through one; a playing partner commented that there wasn't much sand in one.

This was my first time here since they lost the 5th and 6th holes. I had seen the two new greens growing in the last couple times I played here, and the only difference now is they cut a hole and stuck a flag in them. There are no greenside bunkers on these holes or anything of interest. The course now plays to par 68. Also, the routing is very odd: After you finish the par-3 4th, you backtrack by driving all the way back down the 4th and 3rd holes and then drive down the street to the new 5th (which was formerly the 7th). It seems they've also cleared out some areas between around the ditch that separates the 9th (former 10th) and 18th and the 10th (former 11th) and the 17th. Overall, decent for an extreme "deal" price but hard to recommend otherwise.

Found a great pre-paid rate on teeoff.com at $13.50/pp for Friday, 5/25 after a promo code discount.

Having played here just once previously, and not at all impressed, decided it would be a decent option for myself and female playing partner, who doesn't play much golf these days. And, the price was right. Turned out to be a good enough choice, a great value for the course on a lovely sunny, windy day, and she handled the course well enough, in spite of some rust.

Very friendly greeting in the pro shop and he got us out in about 10 minutes after checking in, which was great. We ran a bit late, and arrived just a few minutes ahead of our scheduled 1:30pm tee time, and was paired up with a nice young man who generally hit the ball long and straight - his first time there. POP ended up at 4 hrs, with a short waits here and there. Given the convoluted re-tracking that is now necessary to get to the new #5 tee (old #7) due to the closing of the cart path alongside the abandoned 5th/6th holes, and throttled-down cart speeds, very happy with the POP.

Was glad to see their scorecard now reflects the actual course layout, including the map on the back.

Course was in decent shape overall, but don't get your hopes up. White tees (5318 yards, w/6 par 3s) were very inconsistent, with several providing only un-level options. Fairways were pretty good, about on par with the Costa Mesa public courses. Main issue I felt was hole #18 did have a fairly large 'wet spot' from about 70 yards to just in front of the green on the right side of the fairway. Rough was inconsistent and dubious. Was in a few traps, and other than the lack of raking by patrons, the sand was decent enough to get out of.

Greens were nicely cut, green, firm and did not hold shots well, but rolled pretty smoothly - just a few bumps and at medium speed. Certainly the best part of the course. The two previously 'temporary' greens - now #s 7, 10 are looking good, just a tick below quality the normal ones, and also very firm.

Aside from the course generally, the clubhouse bathrooms could use some investment. Would be nice if they also updated the signs on each teebox to reflect the new hole yardages/numbering. They also could improve the signage on getting to #5 tee back past the #3 teebox, though we did enjoy their sense of humor with the 'You made it' sign, acknowledging once we finally found the 5th hole! A good day out, and was pleased with the choice.

If you ever want to try to straighten out a slice or hook, this is the place to force the issue.
