Played Lakes course earlier this afternoon 8/1 with my buddy Mack from blue tees....usual River Ridge wind greeted us in parking lot..by hole 5 it was gusting up to 25mph....played in 3 hours 45 minutes hours walking as nobody was on course. Greens were in above average shape and were firm on certain holes especially with the wind on back nine. Fairways were decent and have lost some of the green color since the last time I was out here. Sand just fluffy enough, rough not that penal just off fairways. Tee boxes level and enough grass coverage. Marshalls are out like hawks checking receipts and patrolling course....solid layout..challenging in afternoon...i'll be back.

Played this course again this afternoon 7/5 twilight. It was humid today even in Oxnard. Pace of play good at 4 hours walking...could have been quicker but waited on group in front of us every shot. Fairways enough coverage in most all areas. Most fairways are brown but there is more green perking up to them. Tee boxes in good shape...level for the most part and also lush. Sand maintained nicely....some clay spots in some bunkers, soft sand in others....good shape. Greens had just a small verticut to them and were not rolling true. One of our playing partners spoke with a greenskeeper on #16 tee and he stated that they will be rolling and cutting greens tomorrow? Rough up some around greens and fairways and a challenge depending on the hole. Layout solid....back nine should be the tougher nine here but I always play better on it. Several great long and short holes here with a lot of trouble lurking.

Really like this layout - good variety of holes and a blend of parkland/"linksy", with elevation changes, hazards and undulating greens.

Really like this layout - good variety of holes and a blend of parkland/"linksy", with elevation changes, hazards and undulating greens.

Fairways were a bit greener than the last time I was here but still very firm with good runout - enough grass for good lies. Rough was healthy and juicy in spots but nothing too penal. Sand was decent and tees had plenty of grass with minimal damage.

Greens were very firm - like trying to land the ball on the hood of a car - difficult to get the ball to bite. In spite of that they were only medium speed and a bit wobbly/bumpy at times with a lot of poa - rap it firm to keep it online. Pays to know your angles to the greens here as they are set at intriguing positions relative to the fairway.

Holes 4/6/7/8 on the front and 12/13/14/15 on the back are as good as you will find in the area.

Place was busier than before but still moved along pretty smoothly overall - I would give it a try if you've never been here before.

Played this afternoon 6/25 with Nickesquire1 around 2pm. Fairways are brown with some green to them and are very healthy looking. Enough grass in the fairways with good lies. Tee boxes semi-lush with enough grass to tee it from the ground. Bunkers decent shape with enough sand in them. Greens to me were slow and disappointing. Poa greens where especially up hillers needed to be struck firm. In the afternoon here you will need to bring some game with the wind. Love holes #12, #13 and #14. Tough first couple opening holes if the wind is blowing. #2 tee box is new and placed back around 20 yds or so which makes it a tougher hole. Pace of play was slow for RR today at 5 hrs 5 minutes....hope to come back here soon and redeem myself some from today's beat down.

This is one of my favorite layouts in Southern California. It really is a fun design and you can get around in a little over four hours every Saturday. However, I am very concerned about the fairways. It is almost as bad as hitting iron shots off of dirt. There is very little grass, and where there is grass it is mowed very tight. It is strange to be playing on brown fairways in June. I don't know if it is maintenance issue or rather an issue dealing with the type of grass that was originally planted for the fairways. I do know that Poa is now taking over the greens which I assume is intentional. If you have a quality design you should require quality maintenance for the course.

Played this right after Vineyard and almost got 36 holes in total in under 6 hours - on a weekend - in socal - and quality golf too - cheap as well (24 bucks).

Played this right after Vineyard and almost got 36 holes in total in under 6 hours - on a weekend - in socal - and quality golf too - cheap as well (24 bucks).

Preferred this layout overall to the Vineyard 18 - more picturesque and dramatic with water very much in play on at least half of the holes and some dramatic elevation changes. Greens were firmer too and tracked better overall with less poa.

Challenging layout that makes you think throughout - no picnic off the tee (unlike vineyard) and it often tempts you to go for it in 2 on the par 5's, but the approaches and greens require some precision and thought with some knowledge as to good misses.

Loved the layout overall and buzzed through 16 holes never really seeing anyone else in under 2.5 hours.

Did vineyard and lakes in 6 hours for a real cheap price - would have taken as long to get around average, dull 18 on the local muni with half the challenge. Well worth driving out for it.

I'd recommend it to any other souls who have spent all their patience and humor on slow and monotonous golf. A real find fairly close by.

Low rating is due to aerated greens and tee boxes 10 days ago. First time playing this 18 at River Ridge and was surprised how fun the layout is. Not many people playing the lakes today due to aeration. Seems like everybody was on the other 18 holes. Finished the round in 2 hours and 15 mins(twosome).

Played on 4/28/11. Teed off at 10am and finished at 2pm (twosome). Was a little surprised that they would let out a twosome when there were three or four groups on the tee box. Weather was perfect 7... Continue »

Played on 4/28/11. Teed off at 10am and finished at 2pm (twosome). Was a little surprised that they would let out a twosome when there were three or four groups on the tee box. Weather was perfect 70 degrees but was a little windy in the afteroon and it made a few wholes very challenging on the back. Everyone was very friendly from the pro shop, starter, marshals, and even the snack shop guy. Even the guy who hit into us on the third hole was very nice and said he was sorry (would not happen in the Valley or LA). The only issue I have with this course was the driving range. Gauging distance was difficult as after 95 or so yards everything falls into a valley and you can only see the huge nets and back of driving range at about 250 yards. The greens were spectacular. Never putted better in my life. The first cut off the green were like the regular greens on most municipal courses in Los Angeles. Rolls true with virtually no bumps and balls hold the line very nicely. Fairways were coming out of being dormant but still were nice and had a lot of roll for added distance. Water on the course come into play on every hole it's on. Play away from ALL WATER AT ALL COSTS. Add wind and fast fairways into the equation and disaster will happen. Wind plays a major factor as it is predominantly coming out from the west/southwest and affects holes 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 - water hazard, tail left to right wind into the water, 13 - dead into the wind with a small landing area for long hitters from elevated white/blue tees, and 15 - short par three but dead into the wind.

Overall loved the course and a great little gem hidden in Oxnard. Plays somewhat like a links style with very little trees coming into play but elevation plays a pivotal role in determining shot making abilities and creating beautiful vista views. Cost was very reasonable at $51 with cart. Overall excellent course to play in Ventura County. So nice I'm thinking about moving out there.
