After finishing the morning round, we asked the pro shop if it was possible to replay on the Jones course. The guy said not likely, but we ultimately chatted up the Head Pro and he said no problem since the course was pretty empty on a very hot afternoon. He just wanted us to have the carts in by 4:30. Charged us only the "family rate," which was only $50. SWEET! Our same foursome from the second round at Ironwood joined up again for this round and we were finished in about 3 hours. The course as in very comparable shape as Pate. Great tee boxes. Good overall fairways with some brown spots here and there. Rough with some brown/bare spots as well, but overall pretty good. Crusty bunkers. Crusty greens in transition. It seems there were some more greens on this side that still had more rye left on top. Those greens were softer and a tad slower, so it was tricky at times. Still, they rolled smooth on putts. I probably ended up liking the Jones course a tad more than Pate, but I might have been in the minority within my group. They are both really enjoyable designs with similar qualities, and I typically like RTJ Jr. layouts. The fairways on this side are probably a little narrower, the doglegs more severe, and the water hazards encroach more. Several water hazards in play and steep edges that will feed your ball right into the water, so you have to watch out for those and steer clear as needed. Similar green complexes as Pate. Lots of large, elevated greens well protected by bunkers, false edges and run-off areas. These two courses complement each other nicely and both are well worth playing.
