Played early 3/1/20 under iffy weather conditions. With only a trace of rain in February for the Sacramento area I expected course conditions to be very playable.
It was course is in good to better winter conditions in most areas. Tee boxes not full and plush, level and ok. Fairways are in good shape no issues. Not tight lies edge to edge as expected. Greens are in good firm condition rolling well holding high shots well. Back 9 more undulating than the front 9 holes. Bunkers are well maintained and soft sand.
Course has done some maintenance in the edges of the woods and cleared some areas between holes over the winter. The planted flower beds have daffodils coming up.
The elevation of the course and the design through the Carson valley is unique to the area.
Not quite Sierra mountain golf but close facsimile. Cart path only this day was surprising with the dry weather prior month and it made for some extra walking.
Forecast called for chance of light rain which we got and the temperature was low enough for snow flurries as well during the round.
Interesting course that some find quirky (target golf for long hitters) elevation changes forced carries over ravines or wetland areas. I find it challenging and fun enough for at least an annual visit and with the right deal will play it more often. You'll probably lose a few balls but replacements are plentiful knowing where to look.
Recommend.

Played early 7/21. Arrived just-in-time and rolled a few putts only. Maybe not the best way to get warmed up and going at this course. Range available easy access. First tee shot (whites) requires a 185-199 yd shot downhill to get a flat landing area then just under 150 over a ravine to a green with laterals on both sides. Second hole 80yd drop par 3 at 130yds. It's up and down at the mountain. Our playing partners referring to the tips guide and helped one of them to three pars in a row to get going.
Course is green and in good shape all around. Carts restricted on only one hole(10th) but could have been more as the par 5 fifth had a lot of water on it and I felt like it was so much in the fairway that I shouldn't be driving on it in fear of damage. The grass was green and lush and cut tight but underfoot you definitely had squishy turf. This hole and a few others too. Bunkers looked ok didn't try them out. Rough manageable. Most holes have forest or deep grass. A lot of the side back areas have wild flowers with white daisys and sweet peas in bloom right now. Greens putted well and were fresh cut but also had excess moisture on them as if the were watered after cutting or the morning dew reset putts did not leave a trail on the surface. By the afternoon I'd think when dry would be rolling perfect for design.
Fun to play and it's up and down and sidehills at an elevation of about 2700 ft. Big pines cedar and redwood like Tahoe. Cooler temps than the valley which is good this time of year for me.
Customer service great and recognized the pro shop and starter (tenured Sr's) excellent service. The beer is cold. No beverages on the course at this early time.

Played Friday 11/2, 9:50 tee time, after 10 yrs in the Sac area, I finally made it up here, and am so glad I did. A beautiful Sierra course, an hour closer than Tahoe at more than half the price. Course in great shape from tee to green. This is definitely a target golf course. The course tips they provide on the golf cart (and free yardage books) are very very helpful, and the most helpful I've ever come across. It was like a caddy. Execute their tips, from tee to green, and you can score well on your first time playing. I used driver on maybe 5 holes. Greens moderately fast, maybe a 10 stimp. 4:10 rd as a 3 some. Fun time. I wish it was closer. Went to Boa Vista Orchard after to get some apples. Great day.

Played last two Sundays 6/3 & 6/10 first out respectively. Course is in overall excellent condition. Greens rolling trus and well kept very few imperfections and rolling true at fair pace. Tee boxes good coverage and level fairways immaculate.

Interesting course and the big hitters may find that it is a "target" course as others have said in the past. It was in such good shape that I waited a week to play it again to make sure I wasn't over rating the conditions.

Fun to play track in the foothill. Large pine trees and up and down elevation changes and a few views of the snow capped sierras. Lots of wildlife deer, birds, and yesterday two fox kits on the left side playing in the taller grass.

Top notch service from check in to leaving. The beverage cart just starting the day when we were leaving at 9:45

First Time playing at apple mountain on Sat morning before heading over to Yocha. I found this course on Golf moose about 3 months ago and wanted to play here because all of the pine tree's and elevation change throughout the course. We arrived and headed out to the driving range, which was a little chewed up, to warm up.

We got our right on time at 640am and never caught the 4 some in front of us nor saw the group behind us. POP was about 4hrs mostly due to me launching golf balls into the Forrest to see if i can hear that loud crack of a golf ball hitting the Giant Pines. Something about that echo make you feel a little less upset about a poor shot.

This course was in great shape from tee to green and very wet from the morning watering. The course dried out quick with the exception of the bunkers that were wet the whole day. the greens were medium speed and held most shots. One cool thing is they give you a yardage book and where to hit the green so your ball will feed to the hole. This came in handy on hole 2 because if you went for the hole itself it would have rolled of the green. Instead they said hot left center and the ball will slowly feed to the hole.

One Major tip is for hole 5. Its a very long double dog leg Par 5. You must make sure to keep the first ball in play if you dont its going to be a rough hole. Do not try and draw around the the trees because you will still not be able to reach in 2. it was playing at 587 tee to hole on Sat from the Tips. Sadly I did not pay attention and hooked on into the hazard and then followed it up with a poorly aimed third shot that found the tree's. Play it safe and hit it straight there is no reason to be a hero because you will fail unless you are Bubba at the Masters.

This is a wonderful place to play and $65 for prime time its very worth it.

Played the course two weeks ago and it's in awesome shape. The greens are smooth and probably running 9-10. They can't get em to fast and firm or the ball wouldn't stay on the greens. Hills mountain course with elevated tee boxes and beautiful views. It's worth the trip. It's only about 40 minutes from downtown Sacramento. It's a target course. In most cases if you stray too far off the fairway it's gone. The only negative and it's a small one is that there's only a hand full of holes where you hit Driver. Just the same I had a great time and I'm sure you will if you go.

Water restrictions are clearly affecting this course. Fairways were green and brown. Rough was mostly brown.

But greens were good. Generally smooth, speed seemed to be about 10, but quite firm and hard to leave a ball mark.

This course is annoyingly hilly, so much so that most fairways do not allow carts within 100 yards of the green due to the steepness. Club selection is difficult and many greens are hidden from the fairway. Lots of slope in the greens so putting is also a problem.

Amenities are bare. Range balls are extra and you must hit off mats. Putting green is small. No beverage cart service on M/T/W. No bag service but carts allowed in parking lot. No ice chests on carts. Nice grill area with plenty of seating and some shade outside on a patio.

This is just a hard course. If you want a challenge at a reasonable price and don't mind the drought issues, it could be worth your trouble. But it is definitely not a fun course and not one that I would want to play every week -- once a year is fine. Be prepared for a lot of walking up and down hills.

Hadn't played here in about 7 years. Very disappointed in the course condition. Greens were bumpy and slow. Many unfixed ball marks.
Fairways and rough were uneven with many bare spots and divots. Bunkers were irregular and tees were also not good, many uneven and lots of bare spots.

While the green fee of $45 is a little high for these conditions, the accessories did not add to the experience. Apple Mountain does have new golf carts, but no GPS and no ice chests. No on course cart service and range balls are extra, plus you hit off mats.

The course layout is quite difficult. Very hilly with no carts within 100 yards of every green. Makes for a lot of side hill walking. As others have noted, there are no flat lies on this course. Unless you play here regularly, club selection is a pure guess. Greens are large with tiered sections, so three putts are on the menu if you are in the wrong section of the green.

Every fairway is tree lined, lots of doglegs and not much margin for error. If the course conditions were better, Apple Mountain would be quite a challenging place to play. There are better maintained courses in Carson City and Reno,so it is unlikely I will make the two hour drive to Apple Mountain more than maybe once a year.
