Went out today not expecting much after heavy rain about 6 of the last 7 days here. Course was actually in pretty good shape. Greens were soft from the rain but rolling great. Only a couple fairways were still soggy. Most of the traps were playing as ground under repair from all the water. Given all the rain here, it's probably playing about as good as any public course around here. And cannot beat the $46 resident rate and 4 hour round.

The golf course looked good even though it had rained and rained some during the round.

Harding Park, built in 1925, is much improved from the old course it was: by the late 90’s it had deteriorated into a terrible mess; really sad for a course where top pros played the Lucky International in the 60’s, won by the likes of Gary Player and Billy Casper. It was renovated to the tune of 23 million dollars in about 2003, and went on to host the 2005 AMEX Championships which was won by Tiger Woods over John Daly in a playoff.
It’s a fairly gentle layout compared to the nearby site of many U.S. Opens; The Olympic Club, which is a few miles away across Lake Merced. With one exception being Harding’s great and challenging closing hole: the 18th hole, which is a 425 yard dogleg left, requiring a tee shot over water and trees. The rest of the course is fine but one must remember: it’s a muni not a country club. Many of the holes lack ingenuity such as: the ninth; a flat straight par five, the first hole is a wide fairly short par 4, and the 11th hole a simple par 3 guarded by two bunkers. Upkeep at Harding is improving since the renovation but not perfect; it’s no where near private or semi-private club quality. Sometimes the greens are very slow, even for the recreational golfer.
But overall it’s quite a beautiful golf experience. On a perfect day the impressive Cypress Trees cast long afternoon shadows with gleaming sunlight bathing the fairways in amber colors. It can be a real feast for the eyes. The closing holes 14 through 18, have the added beauty of bordering Lake Merced. Beware of the fog though, for summers in San Francisco can be very foggy near the coastal areas (such as Harding).

The revamped Harding Park is an attractive old dame. Front 9 holes are solid if not spectacular - the real jewel is the back 9 and especially 13-18. Course conditions in general are good+ and greens are remarkably smooth for a municipal course. Speed of greens can vary. Course drains very well in wet weather with the exception of the bunkers which can get blown out with heavy rains. Course slope rating is mid 120's but I think that it plays closer to 129 from Whites and 130-132 from Blues as this course is at sea level and plays longer than the yardage. Nothing tricked up about this course, the holes are right there for you. Driving accuracy is important as well as hitting irons close - greens are subtle and hard to make long putts even though speed is not a huge factor. I play here almost every weekend and pace of play can vary wildly. If you are early off the tee, you can expect 4:00-4:15 rounds. Later in the day or behind a tournament and you could be looking at 5:00-5:30 for a round. Weekdays are much quieter.

course is pretty good design and challenging course though I hate this course. because no drinking water fountains on the course, golfshop not friendly, even with resident card $46.00 for public course(monday-thrs).
weekend is more expensive. twighlight start 03:00 considering sfc weather too late to start. go to east bay course you can get better deal and meet friendly staff.

I played this course for the first time on Easter Monday and I was pleasantly surprised as to the variety and condition of every hole. Most of the course is lined with trees, yet forgiving enough to accommodate the average golfer who may spray the odd tee shot. All of the par fours are reachable in two shots with a well placed drive, as are the par fives. All the par three's are over 150 yards. The greens were soft, relatively small, and were all in great shape, and ussually ran away from the dam. My only complaint was the incredible slow play. With the green fees being a low $22, the course attracts many beginners duffing their way around the course. Overall, this is a great place to tune up your game for the price of a couple of buckets of balls.

If you have the resident card, there's no better deal on the planet. Absolutely fantastic course that's normally in superb condition. If you live in the city and like to play golf, go give city hall the best $40 you'll ever spend.

Opinions of Harding will always be off - If you have a resindet card, as I do, it is the best deal in golf. Hard to justify the major hike rate for out-of-towners. But either way Harding is a great track and worth playing once if not many many times.

Course was in great condition. Bunkers were still a bit firm from the recent rains, but no standing water in them. Pace of play is still around 4 1/2 hrs, unless your starting in the early morning times then they push you to finish in 4 hr, 15 min.

Worth it if your a SF resident, otherwise it's too expensive to play for what you get.

Course attendants and greenskeepers from other courses could come play Harding to learn how a course should be maintained. There is a reason the PGA Tour is coming to this course, even after a period of very heavy rains the course was perfect.

The best part is that Kemper Managment actually keeps golfers moving so if you are a slow player be prepared to have to skip a hole to keep up or get asked to leave. The marshalls watch to see what is happening before they target a group for slow play though...they know to look for the actual bottleneck and try to fix it. For a player like me, who learned that a round should not take more than 3-4 hours, ever, Harding is a godsend. I walked the course on a Saturday in under 4 hours!! I will now go out of my way to look for courses run by Kemper.

Harding Park is the place to play golf in The City of San Francisco!

In additional to Harding's 18 hole course, they have FLEMMING, an excellent 9-hole course. Both courses is in excellent shape and well maintained.

The City spent $8 million dollars to renovate the course in 2002-2003. The PGA and USPA is coming back to Harding for tournaments.

When the clubhouse is finished in June 2005, it will be a great place to hangout. The employees are cordial and friendly.

No snob attitudes here, just a real golf course with real golfers that enjoy playing golf, or putting on the practice greens.

Good deal for the money and the course conditions are excellent.
