Got a deal on under par, $100 for two with replay. Took the hour drive from SCV and played with my friend. The deal came with a small bucket of balls for each golfer. The pro shop staff was great and we had no problems with the voucher. We planned on playing twice and i thought we’d be done around 6pm and I’d have to wait for traffic to die down.

We got out early 0700 and they put us with Louie, a Marshall from Dad Miller, he was the best, like having a caddy. We finished at 1100 and grabbed hamburgers at the restaurant. I know hamburgers and it might be worth the drive for the burger, the staff was great. After eating we went to the pro shop and they said we could tee off whenever we wanted. We finished by 3:30 and I drove the 2 hours home, it was worth it, $25 per round and range balls is a steal.

As far as the course I’m used to the dry conditions in northern LA County. This course was green and in great condition. POP per round averaged 3 1/2 hours and the second round a foursome let us thru which unfortunately rarely happens in la county. Tee boxes, fairways, greens and traps were in good shape, not perfect, but good. I would definitely recommend this course especially with the under par deal.

After reading Grantar2's novel, it dawned on me that I had not played Anaheim Hills for quite a while, so thought I'd give it a try. I was fortunate enough to get out early so no issues with pace of play. While this has never been one of my favorite courses, it has a number of interesting holes and is a nice change of pace. I used to walk this course, but having a foot injury, it was nice to take a cart. (Which I think might be required?)

How can I add anything to the prior review? Grantar2 covered everything! My expectations were not high given that review, but I did not find the greens as bad as expected. ( I made some putts, so when that happens, the greens are never bad ! )

Enjoyed the round and promised myself it would not be so long before I return again.

Played Anaheim Hills Golf Course Friday August 31st 2018 as a twosome with my friend Bob. We would be joined by a single Steven on the fifth hole. Round was booked on Underpar and the two of us played 18 holes, with small range bucket and cart with GPS for $34 per person. Our tee time was 12:48, we got out at 12:10.
The parking lot is large, the facility is attractive with a private club feel. The pro-shop has the necessary items in case you forget anything and the staff is friendly, efficient and knows how to process the Underpar round. We checked in a little over an hour early, got our ticket for the range balls and told we could go out have 12:05pm there was a foursome and threesome that had priority.
The driving range is basic, and being reworked. The hut with the ball machine needed a cleaning but the machine worked fine. Mats were good on the upper deck where we warmed up.
Practice greens. The practice greens were neat available right next to the driving range and another next to the starter stand. Both were in much better condition than any of the greens we found on course.
The carts are nice, clean, seem new and have a very good GPS that lets you know how your progressing against the planned play time, locates the other carts on course as many of the fairways require blind shots, and are set to prevent your from getting to many areas on the fairways. This last feature well it protects the course can be devastating to scores, if you have a bad shot and don’t have the right club. With the Kikuyu grass on this course especially around greens you are already hiking into the tendency is to play follow up shots with whatever club you have.
The course according to signage is undergoing upgrades and renovation.
This course is hilly, and features significant elevation changes, blind tee shots, blind approach shots. My two key takeaways from my round, a first at Anaheim Hills is that this not a course suitable for a high handicapper. I enjoy challenges, and don’t mind losing a ball or two, that said if Steven a member at the course had not joined us the round would have been far less enjoyable for me. Steve knows the course well, and could advise on targets, without this the round likely would have been a train wreck as every fairway slopes some way or another, and there are native areas the cut into fairways that are unseen.

The tee boxes on first inspection look very good, however most are not level, and a few actually have terrain features link spines running through them. Good footing is at a premium. Most tees are either elevated, well below the hole, and many feature waste areas to cross.
Fairways were very good overall, there were the usual one or two overwatered spots, and some areas were a little brown and thin, on whole they are in great shape for late summer. There are few level lies, the ball will undoubtedly be above or below your feet. My usually playing partner that will play a course like Big Rec or Sky Links to 6 over found himself playing bogey golf and felt the numerous blind shots, unlevel lies and massive elevation changes were gimmicky and did not enjoy the course at all. I on the other hand thought the views were wonderful, felt the designer had used the existing contours of the canyon pretty much unchanged, much as the founders of golf did in Scotland. This course could cause you to drink.

Rough. Where there is rough along the fairway it’s long, spidery, Kikuyu that grabs the club like an angry octopus. The rough around the greens were deeper and more difficult.

Out of bounds. There are extensive environmentally protected out of bounds areas, which are populated by rattle snakes. In several areas the GPS would post a warning, and there were hard signs in the ground along the fairway.
Bunkers. Over all the bunkers were in good condition with good sand, we did find one fairway bunker flooded, and had to rake it to find the tee shot that was lost. From the tees you couldn’t see the bunker. Bunkers both fairway and especially greenside are used extensively to protect the course as if a course with this much elevation changed need a stronger defense. (Was so glad my laser range finder had slope)
Additional defense. It never got bad, but besides sloping fairways, elevation changes, blind tee and approach shots, and the greens, being in a canyon this course is protected by wind. At times a one club elevation change was complicated by a one to two club breeze.

Greens. The greens are the low point of what is otherwise beautiful course, they are smaller than most practice par three course, and they seem to have suffered a fungal infection or a disagreeable bout of over seeding. Some looked water erosion damaged but counter intuitive to the topography of the green. There were a number of subtle breaks, curves, slopes, and on a couple of occasions tiers. The condition of the grass, and the overall bumpiness meant that putting was a combination of challenge and pure luck.

As a double bogey golfer this course is clearly more technical and challenging that I should be playing. Despite that I enjoyed the course and the people a lot. (well OK all but the guy mowing the grass around the green I was putting on, and the ushers for the wedding party hooting and hollering well I was trying to put on 18. (hey they were just having fun).

We saw the cart girl twice and she had a well-stocked cart with fair prices. The Snack bar was a little slow at the turn, but the hot dog was great, the bun fresh, and the attendant was kind enough to tell us that the price of dog and drink is the same with or without chips, did we want chips. I didn’t try the restaurant.

I like this course, and I would play it again, but I wouldn’t bring my regular playing partner. I would have to play with someone like our single Steven who knows the course well. I would also temper my expectations knowing that it’s a challenge. The thing I would most like to see fixed are the tee boxes. Great coverage, lack of divot damage, don’t help when your facing a long carry over a hazard to a sloping fairway form an unlevel lie.

The course is in fantastic shape right now! Greens are fast, receptive, and smooth. Fairways and rough are lush.

Played Fri may 11th at 7.04, check in fast, this is a hilly course and the wind pick up a bit that made it much more difficult. Course itself was ok no issues with tee boxes, fairways, or greens, was in a few traps and they were very thin with the fairway one on #6 being nothing but dirt. POP was not good at 4;25, we were behind a very slow 4 some which were playing from blues, 2 had good swings and 2 were beginners who should have been playing whites. No Marshalls on course at all and only saw cart girl on 15. We only play this course once a year and I am glad, at $44 senior there are many better values out there.

Played Anaheim Hills on 3/24, as a 3some, at about 8:30am. POP was a decent 4:30. Waiting on many holes on a busy Saturday morning, but we were a 3some, so overall it was it wasn’t horrible.

Course is a very quirky layout. Lots of doglegs. Uphill, downhill, doglegs, etc. A little too quirky for my taste.
Overall, the shape of the course was decent though.
Tee boxes - mostly lush & level
Fairways - good coverage with lots of roll (not a great thing here, because you run out of fairway sometimes).
Bunkers - good, smooth sand in both fairway and green side bunkers.
Greens - overall decent. Some had lots of ball marks, but still putted medium speed (a lot slower than expected; looked really fast).

Again, the course is in good shape, and I’d recommend; I just don’t personally like it overall (the design of the holes).

The course was in good condition, still some dormancy, fairways are starting to green up but has some thing spots, same with the rough. The bunkers were hard, with little sand, the greens were lush, and quick, specially down hill. POP was OK at about 4 hrs 40 min.

FYI good GPS, also carts have USB port, if you need one.

First time back out to Anaheim Hills in years but got a great TeeOff.com time + 20% off promo code (thanks for the tip Kassper7!) to bring the overpriced $72 greens fee down to a very worthy $48. Played the blue tees with a father and son and then another single who just happened to be a GKer - great playing with you Dixie (iluv2golflady)!

It was a beautiful day for golf and I was pleasantly met with very nice course conditions for the most part at Anaheim Hills. I found the fairways to be mostly in very good shape with very few poor/thin lies, but you may find a few if you're just off the fairways. The rough can be very thin off the tee, and there are plenty of places to lose balls on this quirky 18, but the thick rough is around the greens that will really wreak havoc with your chipping unless you're very committed.

Greens were not particularly fast and have many confounding breaks and tough pin locations (mostly because there was a men's tournament earlier in the day), but they rolled actually quite nicely and I did not see a huge amount of ball marks. Speed of the greens seemed to change throughout the day, but coverage was nice with only a few of them showing some signs of wear and tear.

Tee boxes were good with some on the back nine a little more chewed up than the front, but there are some really fun start positions to work with at AH. The bunkers were not that great if there's something to be really picky about - mostly quite thin and even one on hole 13 (left greenside bunker from the tee) that had a half of it under standing water.

This is certainly not a beginner's course. It can be very confusing judging distances off the tee to blind doglegs and plenty of elevations with narrow trajectory points along the way. There is no shortage of trouble to find if you're off your game. And let's face it - a lot of the holes here are really wacky and just plain odd. By the same token, there are also a lot of beautiful holes and areas where you can really appreciate the scenery.

In essence, this course won't be for everyone, but from a condition standpoint, it's worth taking a look right now, if you can get that discounted rate. For me personally, I think the rack rate is just a tad high. I was glad though to finally knock this course off my 100 list after having played it twice early in my playing career. Now on to the next one!
