While we had the second tee time on the North course, when we arrived it was 39 degrees and nobody else was around. We were informed it was carts on the path until 8:30, but since we walk, it had no impact on us, except that we had to pick the ice out of our spikes every hole or so. Cold, but walking made it tolerable. Greens were the best part of the course, but since we had no mowed greens they were far too slow for my taste. I think they could have been very good id they had been cut? Fairways were a mix of dormant grass, green grass, and bare areas. Rough was kinda the same way. I was in three bunkers. Two had sand, one was super thin - no sand ! I enjoy this course, but was disappointed to see they have removed the ponds which fronted holes #10 & #17. Also no water to the left of #12, or bordering the approaches on #16. Too bad, I thought that gave character to those holes. Staff was great ! Probably as friendly and accommodating as I've seen at this course.

Played Fri Dec 29th at 7:23 check in fast and easy, course was crowded, got to the starter and one 4 some on tee box, one waiting, and then us, and of course the 2 foursomes in front of us had to play the blues, one guy in the group in front of us hit it to the tennis net on the right side and then teed up another ball.... ooookay, playing the blues....... got out 10 minutes late. POP was not good at 4:45, but then again watching the 4 some in front of us tee off they obviously thought they hit the ball allot farther than they did after all they were playing the blues (you know the "mans" tee) it just grips me seeing guys trying to be maucho on the course and slowing down play... ... oh well. ... back to the course, it was typical winter condition, no issue with tee boxes, fairways, traps or greens. Greens were slower than expected, i left several putts short. Service at breakfast and lunch in the club house was great as usual.

Played the North on Saturday 12/9 on a pretty busy day. Had a 7:45 time and payed $40 to walk. Beautiful weekend morning and we played in about 4 hours but never really waited on any hole. The group ahead of us was really moving. Much like the South, the North is in real nice condition. Although not as long as the South, it is still a challenging course. Fairways are in great shape. Bunkers are all in great shape. Some are very soft and we got a couple of fried eggs. All of the bunkers have been improved except for the two in front of #16 green. Both are still hard as rocks (I think they plan to keep it that way). Greens are great. Very smooth and starting to quicken up. I play here regularly and never get tired of it. Staff is great both in the clubhouse and in the restaurant.

I’m not sure how much longer Los Serranos can keep flogging the “Course of the Year” award from 2012 – it’s all over the cart logos and banners in the parking lot. Conditions now remind me more of El Prado than Goose Creek. Played on a clear hot Saturday morning 11/25/17, at 10am, paired with a traveling couple who found LS on GolfNow – we booked on the course site for $60. Much less wind than I’m accustomed to at LS made the day hotter, but wasn’t as much of a usual factor in shots. Overall, I was disappointed with course conditions. Greens had good coverage and held shots, but were very bumpy, rolling at medium+ speed that increased as they dried out. Fairways and rough were disappointing – you either got wet/lush growth or dry/hard/bare dirt. All fairways had scattered small and large bare areas. Balls in the fairway tended to sit tight, even where there was adequate grass cover. Rough was lush primarily around greens, but along fairways and (especially) under the numerous trees there was generally little to no grass, firm conditions resulted in balls running forever, and lies were a crapshoot. Some rough areas have been converted from grass to mulch. There are lots of sand traps here and they were in good shape, although local golfers are apparently unfamiliar with the concept of the rake. Many tees are sloping, and par-3 tees show lots of use (we played Blue). At least the course provides divot mix boxes on the par-3s – if only golfers would use them! Basic carts. Range on grass today. Adequate water available. Snack shacks in operation on #s7, 13, and 16. Ponds fronting par-3s #10 and 17 have been removed since I was here 5 years ago, as well as the pond left of #12. We waited on most shots and finished in just over 5 hours – fairly typical for a weekend morning here. Saw one marshal who was not doing anything to move play. He did give us some refilled sand bottles on #10 – the refill rack on the 7th tee was empty. Except for greens, overall turf conditions here are poor. There are numerous areas scattered around the course which are sloppy wet and badly rutted from equipment – I assume these are related to leaky points in the irrigation system, so there are lots of areas needing attention. Maybe some of that saved water can go to the dried-out fairway/rough areas that apparently get little water.

I'd give it a 7/10. The course was in a really good state, the tee boxes were nice, the fairway was the best I have ever seen it at Los Serranos (North) and the greens were good for being punched rece... Continue »

I'd give it a 7/10. The course was in a really good state, the tee boxes were nice, the fairway was the best I have ever seen it at Los Serranos (North) and the greens were good for being punched recently. There were a few small wobbles here and there, but I was really happy for the most part with the greens. For some reason, Los Serranos seems to always take immense pride in their bunkers, they are always immaculate and perfect. Also, as per usual at Los Serranos, the POP was slow, unless you're the first two groups to head out in the morning, then you're going to wait, I started at 11AM and even as a single it took over 4hrs to play a round. I'm happy with the course.

Played Fri Nov 10th at 8:15 check in easy and friendly, got out on time, POP was good at 4:10, tee boxes, good condition and level, fairways were very wet, multiple tee shots with driver, 3w, and 5w showed plug mark and the ball 3 inches away and very muddy, not sure why so wet, there was no rain. Was in 1 trap and good sand, the 1st green still showed signs of being punched, you could see the holes healing but after that the greens were great. Breakfast and service was great as usual, lunch not sure what happened but they may have been too busy as service took a little long and even had to ask for check.

Played Fri Oct 20th at 730 got out on time. POP was not good at 428. We were a 4 some following 2 3 somes and waited every hole. Breakfast was great and the service was great as usual. Check in quick and friendly. The #1tee box was moved up but all the rest were in normal places. Tees, fairways, rough were all fine. I was in 1 green side bunker and sand was good. On the back 9, 2 of us hit shots into green side bunkers and they bounced out so they seemed hard. Greens were punched about 4 weeks ago or so and were healing nicely, really didn't have an issue with them. Lunch and service great afterwards.

Played on Oct 9. I had heard that Los Serranos was a terrific course and had intended to play it for a long time. I kept hearing how top amateur events were usually held there, etc. Unfortunately, when I first played it last year in 2016, the course was in awful shape. There were many bare spots and the bunkers were just dirt. I assumed that the drought just took its toll on the course like it did on so many other courses. However, after seeing how courses that were previously in awful shape were somewhat better after the past winter, I had high hopes for Los Serranos this time. Alas, I saw little to no improvement. I kept seeing the same old bare spots on the fairways, rough and even just a few yards from the greens. The bunkers remain just hard dirt, so hard that I saw shots roll right through and out of them. The range looked ugly and the balls were mostly old and dirty. On the plus side, the greens weren't too bad and the folks in the pro shop were friendly and gave us a good deal on range balls when a golf tournament delayed our tee time by over half an hour. We were a bit surprised by a cranky old course marshall who threatened us with a slow play warning a few holes in even though the next group behind us was on the tee on a par 5 and we were on the green. Something about 13 minutes a hole. We weren't upset by it since we expected to finish the round quickly with no one left on the course after the shotgun tournament and with all three of us being fairly decent golfers (scores ranging from 74 to 83). We just found the gentleman rather bizarre and oblivious to reality. Perhaps he wasn't doing his job during the tournament that caused our half hour delay in our starting time and was reprimanded. Whatever. We were able to finish the course in four hours just as the sun set so everything worked out just fine. I'm sure the course was once in great shape judging from the omnipresent 2012 Course of the Year signs, but this course appears to be resting on its laurels. It's too bad because it is a nice course with lots of interesting holes. Was the $36 or so I paid to play worth it? Probably, but definitely not worth any more than that given the conditions. However, if the conditions were terrific, I'd be happy to pay more than double that. I hope they will turn it around. At least start by designating bare spots as ground under repair and having grass at least five yards around the green and green side bunkers. It would certainly be nice if the bunkers had some sand instead of just hard dirt.

Teed off Wednesday at 9:45 and finished in 4.5 hours. I will start by pointing out that the aeration alerts for the North and South course were flipped. The North was aerated early September and the South the week of 9/25. The greens showed no signs of punching. However, a thin layer of sand was applied to the greens. This did not affect putting. The greens were a little on the shaggy side and rolled reasonably smooth with medium speed. The greens were soft and held shots. The fairways were mostly good with some thin areas scattered throughout the course. The rough was fair to good with some thin/bare spots. The bunkers around the greens were good. Fairway bunkers were fairly hard. The tee boxes were fair to good mostly due to mild unlevelness. The holes on the course range from flat to hilly. The staff was very friendly.
