Found this course on GolfNow for $27 so I had to try it. Course is in great shape and very playable and fair. I was paired up with a member so he was very helpful at pointing out the spots to hit for. Generous fairways so if you are not hitting the ball straight there is some room for error, but that doesn't mean you can spray the ball all over the place. I didn't find a bad lie in any of the fairways and they are in very good shape. The greens can be tricky and they had some of the pins in some tough spots and unless you hit a very high ball you were not going to get close to some of the pins. With this course situated at the base of the Superstition Mountains almost every green broke away from the mountains, but not all. There are some fun holes that can sucker you into trying to drive the green, but you could end up in some tight spots to hit your approach from so driver is not always the club to choose. I can't say to much about the bunkers because I was only in one of them, but the one that I was in was very nice and well maintained. Plenty of sand and no rocks which was a nice surprise for a change. Pace of play was 4 hours which for a holiday weekend was not bad considering we were a threesome and we followed a foursome all day. Staff was very friendly and the facility is nice with a decent practice area. If you are on the east side of the Phoenix valley or even in the Phoenix area its worth the 45 minute drive not to mention the great views of the mountains.

Played early Tuesday morning off a GN tee time. Upon arrival, no more than 10 cars in parking lot, looks like MB is starting its summer season. I was most looking forward to seeing if the renovation of the bunkers (long this course's worst feature) was completed. Happy to say that it has been completed, and they've done a terrific job of making their biggest blight into a positive course feature, even on the large fairway bunkers. I was in only one (fronting the uphill 9th green) and came out of it quite easily, leading to an easy up and down. As for the rest of the course, tee boxes were green if a little overgrown in areas. Fairways were in excellent shape, rough was cut slightly higher as is the norm here. Greens on the front nine were fast and true, but, sadly, on the back nine, the greens had been punched (with no maintenance notice on GN or from the pro shop). Definitely caused a few putts to look more like Pachinko balls than golf balls. Driving range is in great shape, no cart girl to be found (who could blame her, with only 15 people on the course, tops). PoP was around 2.25 hours. CP

Played on a $30 email special 12/14. Paired up with a father/son who come out here every year. Never played this course in the winter before; the biggest difference between now and summer conditions is the rough, and the volume of it. In the summer, balls it common for balls to have an extra 15-20 yards of roll, and the rough is rarely more than 1" higher than the fairway. Today, rough in places was as high as 6", and commonly 4" and very wet and sticky due to recent precipitation. definitely made the course play longer and harder than usual. My partners agreed with me that they had never seen grass this high at Mountain Brook before.

The other major change were the bunkers, the subject of an ongoing reclamation project by the course. I'm happy to say that all the green side bunkers now boast nice fluffy sand, making actually bunker shots a reality for the first time in years on this course. Fairway bunkers still closely resemble rocky hard pan conditions, but one thing at a time. PoP was a little over 4 hours, to be expected with the time of year.

Played Sunday 8/24. Mountain Brook seems to have dropped their affiliation with GolfNow, so I played on their "Dollar Days" $1/hole special. Went out @ 10am, course was surprisingly crowded. Earlier emails from the course superintendent stated they were working on upgrading their horrific bunkers, starting with the greenside ones first and I wanted to check on their progress.

Conditions: Most tee boxes are in good shape, some of the Par 3s looking a little worn. Fairways were green and more grown out than I'm used to at this time of year, a pleasant surprise. Rough as usual was mowed about an inch higher than the fairway grass, nothing too penal. Greens, usually fast, were pacing out at a moderate speed today, not bumpy and otherwise in solid condition. As for the aforementioned bunkers, it appears they only completed work through about the first four holes. Other than that, when you get up and down from a bunker here, it should be called a "rocky" and not a "sandy" if we're trying to be accurate. Customer service was very good as usual. One of the things I like about this track are the Par 5s, all of which can be reachable by regular golfers under the correct conditions. It's fun pretending you're a big hitter from time-to-time.

great price...not crowded at all ...greens were great. sand traps inconsistant with a lot of rocks and pebbles in them...is this typical for AZ courses? that is my only complaint...so if you don't hit it in the sand....you will enjoy this shortish course but great conditions and nice staff....driving range on grass...great practice area too....

Played with their Cinco de Mayo email special Sunday 5/5 as a single. First time back this year on one of my favorite tracks. Capsule recap of amenities: friendly staff in pro shop, gas carts (okay to bring your own cooler), grassy driving range (in very good shape), and small putting green. There is a bunker/chipping area behind the second hole that only the locals are aware of. Tee boxes in good to excellent condition, fairways in their usual well trimmed but mostly green shape, rough is about 1" higher than the fairways. Greens were running fast and furious, but putting true. Only real issue with the course right now are the bunkers, which ranged from poor to abysmal to mediocre/fair on a few of them. Pace of play was a sizzling 2.5 hours and could have been faster (welcome to summer golf in Phoenix!). Tip: this course can often be empty on weekend afternoons--the locals play during the week. So, if you are looking for a quick, solid 18 holes of golf, you now know the secret. CP

I'm apart of the local AZ Outlaws Mens Club and Mountain Brook is our home course. We play here every Saturday and I can tell you this course is generally in some of the best conditions you'll find in Arizona regardless of the time of year. During the summer months, the course is manicured perfectly. There are some burned spots, but that is expected in Summer in AZ with 110+ temps on most days. The greens are usually in great shape, and the rough is long & tough, but fair. The only downfall to this course is the bunkers. The bunkers are some of the worst in state.

Update for July 2010: Course still in great shape, a few bare spots in the fairways, sand traps were a bit concrete-y, but greens and teeboxes in great shape. Still highly recommend.

Want to be pleasantly surprised? Drive to AJ and play Mountain Brook. Not the most difficult course you're gonna find (low handicappers will eat this course alive), but definitely one of the best cared for courses I've played anywhere in Maricopa County.

All the tee boxes are in spectacular shape; it looks like they're getting ready to host a tour event here, they are so perfectly manicured. Fairways are very trim, still green in most spots, and I did not have a bad lie all day. Greens were a bit soft; held every shot into them that wasn't a rocket blast. Putting was true and lines held. Even though it's one of those courses that winds itself through a housing development, there is no sense of claustrophobia and the houses really don't come into play except for severe slices. Sand traps were in mediocre condition, and the cart girl only came by once; that's about the worst thing I can say about this place. A fun little courser to play, and really practice your iron shots. Definitely worth the price and trip.
