The 15th Club: Your Thinking Cap.

When you play a course regularly, it is easy to just go out and hit shots without thinking of the consequences. Do not lose your focus. If you would just think about what you are doing, how many shots could you shave off your score that round? Perhaps, 3, 4, or more. Would the prospect of playing better help your focus? From personal experience on the golf course, I find myself lost in my thoughts. Here are some ways to get your head back in the game.

Ok, you know the par fives that you can or cannot reach before you even hit your tee shot. If you know you have a three shot hole, then why take out the driver and rip it into possible trouble? One shot possibly saved. Even a second shot on a three shot hole, play for position. Do not play for how far you can hit it; giving you an awkward distance to the green. What about pin position? Are you on the correct side of the fairway for your approach? Keep your mind engaged with the task at hand will help you focus.

For every hole, don't just look at the green and the pin position, select a club, hit and pray for the wind to correct the shot. Take a broader look, ask yourself, if I miss hit this, where would it be best to end up? Am I a good bunker player? No, then avoid them at all costs. Can I make the 40 to 50 yard pitch shots? Play to your strengths on the course, practice your weaknesses at the range.

Be flexible. Be able to adapt to your circumstances also on the given day. It is hard to adjust mid-round when your driver isn't cooperating. Use the 3 wood or hybrid off the tee, it might save a couple strokes. Personally in the end, I just want to know I gave it my best and not leave the course thinking about a stupid mistake or misstep here or there. Hindsight is always 20/20, so forgive yourself for the knuckle-head play the previous hole. If you focus on the here and now or at the very least consider your options; playing to your strengths of that day, there is a good chance you will play a satisfying round of golf.

Just to give you an idea, lately, I have been walking my local golf course, it really has given me a different perspective. If it weren't for keeping my thinking cap in my bag, taking it out occasionally and using it what could have been forgettable rounds have been memorable. One thing is for sure, that thinking cap is coming with me wherever I go. Here's to lower scores!
