Round 1 of the Florida vacation happened today at Davie Golf & Country Club. Overall, the experience was ok, nothing horrible but nothing special either. Conditions were fair at best, the greens could certainly use a little bit of love. They were pretty slow, but I think they need to keep them that way as they have some pretty severe slopes. Just the same, they shouldn't be this bumpy. Tees were a little shaggy, but the fairways were very nice, as was the rough, which wasn't very long at all, and not much of a penalty. I avoided all of the bunkers, so I can't say too much about them, although they didn't look great. I teed off right about 10 am, and it took 4:40 to finish, with waiting on nearly every shot. I'm not surprised by the pace, but it really felt excruciating at times on the front. By the back, I think I had gotten a bit used to it.

The layout felt a little bit goofy to me, which is the main reason I don't think I would play here again. There's tons of water, which with the wind would be the course's main defense. This didn't really bother me too much, but it seemed like the holes alternated between long and into the wind, followed by short and downwind. It felt like there wasn't a single par 4 that you would call mid length, they were either over 400 yards, or right at 300. The par 5's were ok, as were the 3's, but they just weren't good enough to make up for the 4's.

It was pretty warm, and I think I was the only player actually walking, and that was the main reason I chose to play here. It seems nearly every course in Florida has riding in a cart mandatory. I'm glad I played here, but I do think once will have been enough.
