Shandin Hills Golf Course is nestled nicely in a little, quaint valley surrounded on all sides by the ghetto. I'm serious, it's pretty cool how golf courses make the area around them so much nicer. Anyway, about the course. Shandin hills is a fairly easy, fairly plain golf course. The course is flat except the 6th, 7th and 8th holes. The 7th is a mid length par 3 with a receptive green but has a nasty elevation drop. This is the highest point on the course and provides a very nice view. The 8th hole is a massive par 5 with a another huge elevation drop allowing you to easily crush drives about 60 yards longer than usual; to add to the distance is the prevailing tailwind that is unnoticeable on most parts of the course. The course has some nice water features on the 4th, 9th, and 15th but nothing spectacular. The back 9 is much more shaded and narrow than the flat, open front. It has rolling fairways and more doglegs; it almost seems to be less traveled and better maintained. Keep one thing in mind: Sometimes when they mow the rough, they don't remove the grass shavings and this makes your ball almost impossible to find in the rough (This is especially prevalent on the 6th hole). Keep your drives in the fairway and watch carefully where they land. Lastly, I would not recommend this course for a lefty with a slice because every hole doglegs right or has out of bounds left.

I just got back into golf after an 8 year layoff and Shandin is about 5 minutes away from my house. I’ve played the last 3 weekends and feel that it is a good value public course. Everyone comments about the quality of the greens and I feel that they are very good also. Most golfers tend to not like the back nine, but when I make the turn I feel that it is more open, giving me the confidence to go for some long drives. The freeway is partially distracting, but the train can definitely be a nuisance. For the price it seems like a great bargain for me. The only other course I’ve played in the area is San Bernardino golf club and while I found the driving range better at SB the course at Shandin is much better especially because the greens are not covered with ball marks. I’m still looking to get out to Redlands CC, Empire Lakes, and Oak Quarry for some comparisons.

I found the overall course to be in very good condition, it would be helpful if there were more distance markers. The fairways and tee boxes were in excellent shape and the greens were outstanding. Played early on a Saturday morning and the couse was not crowded at all. Played in just less than 4 hours.

Course has been overseeded and should be back up to really good conditions in about a month. Course was really wet in the early morning, saturated from the recent rains.

Played for the first time in a tournament on Sunday morning, on a very mild, pleasant day where a nice breeze came up around noontime. Layout is okay, not wide open, but not too tight either. It's good to play a course where houses don't line every hole (although they are on the left side of the first hole). On the front side, there is a stretch of holes that go steadily uphill along the I-215 freeway. A couple of those greens had holes cut on some pretty tough slopes. The back nine is across the freeway. The constant train movement nearby was a bit distracting. One train in particular made some really awful squealing noises, like "The Best Sound Effects from The Exorcist". Greens were nice, smooth and a little above medium speed. Ball marks looked mostly repaired, but not repaired very well. Worst part of the course appeared to be the bunkers. Each bunker I was in seemed to have less dirt (not sand) than the one before. You almost had to play the shots like chip shots off of hard pack. The tee boxes sometimes had little slopes in them, but not as severe as I've seen other American Golf courses. Service was pleasant, with the pro shop being extra friendly. The range was kind of odd...irons only, with no fencing on either side, just tall trees. I was in a tournament, so play was pretty slow. I wouldn't mind playing here again, but I don't think I'll make a point of it.

Great golf course! $43 bucks on a weekend, great greens and fairways, rough 2-4 inches, tight fairways, don't understand why this place isn't packed!! Some tee boxes unlevel, and sand could use to get rid of some rocks, but overall for the bucks, just as good as Oak Quarry, $40 bucks cheeper! I guess people like cliffs better than trees!!!
