The north course @ Admiral Baker takes you to a part of San Diego, that people who have lived here for 50 years, never knew existed. Tucked away in the bamboo trees(a good drive away from Mission Gorge Rd), the first 5 holes run parallel from Zion to Jackson. Be ready to grip it and rip it from the get go, because the first 6 holes are all over 350yrds, including two par 5's. The wide open fairways can use some work, but the deer that roam the course help you forget bad shots, and let you enjoy an afternoon in the country/city. The greens are some of the smallest I've ever seen, and won't win any awards for upkeep, but for a navy course they'll do just as good as your skill level lets them be. What I like about the course is that if you are playing twilight, there is always a hole that you can hop on that is heading back to the clubhouse if the sun starts going down on you. For example, if you get a really late start(around 3pm in Nov.), you can play 1-5, then hop on over to 14 or 15 and try to finish. Believe me, you will be hard pressed to find more than 2 or 3 groups out on the north course around that time. The reason why is because everyone that plays after 2pm, always plays south because it never goes very far from the clubhouse. I also suggest that if you play twlight, that you walk @ Admiral Baker, because they make you return your cart 30 minutes before sundown, minimium. Well, now that I've given out all my secrets to enjoying an early evening @ my favorite course, I'll see how much my two cents amount to. Enjoy

I play this course 2 or 3 times a year. It is fairly difficult, with a long but straightforward layout. The green fees are a bargain, even if you are a civilian playing with someone that has military privileges. Some improvements were made a couple years back and the course was in great shape. Unfortunately, the fairways are in poor condition right now. Many fairway areas are so dry/dead they are marked as ground under repair and many more should be. The greens are Bermuda and have always been slow. Since I rarely play Bermuda I find them more difficult to read, but for the most part they are pretty flat and simple. By far the best part of the course is the openness, with all houses and other buildings off in the distance. We occasionally see deer and a small buck walked along near us as we played #12. Overall, this is an enjoyable, reasonably priced traditional course. Just don’t expect country club conditions.
