I continue to love Rustic Canyon for its decisively un-modern, anything-but-tricked-up layout, its wide fairways that allow players to choose many routes to the greens, and for the fact that every hole looks like an absolute pushover until you get near those devilish greens. True, it's not the hardest golf course in Southern California. True, it's not the most prestigious public course, nor perhaps the most conveniently located, the best-staffed, the most customer-friendly. It is, however, a gem, and it's in great shape right now with excellent, lush fairways, quick and firm greens that are still receptive to well-struck shots, and although the rough is somewhat spotty and has a lot of bare spots, on most holes it's just fine. I happen to like the "rustic" quality of the bunkers, many of which are more like waste areas with pebbly, sandy dirt - these are, after all, hazards, and when you hit into them, you take your medicine. While I would be delighted to see a customer service upgrade here and would be especially pleased to see some steps taken to improve the pace of play (4+ hours on a weekday in the 2nd group to tee off is totally unacceptable in my view - these rounds should take a MAXIMUM of 3.25 hours), these are minor complaints. I think this place is insanely great.

But you do bring up a very good point...why on earth is there artificial turf to begin with? Especially in that beautiful canyon and on that beautiful golf course!

Hadn't played the course in a month. The rains have really helped the hillsides. The fairways and greens were in good condition. The only disappointment was the shortening of #7 due to fairway rebuilding. Had a wonderful time, a wonderful course.

Played an early morning round. They have the greens and aprons dialed in now - firm and nice speed.

Played an early morning round. They have the greens and aprons dialed in now - firm and nice speed.

Course is in good shape with the mentioned flood damage below. They apparently got a lot of rain up the canyon. There are also some low areas on some fairways that are a little thin due to water damage also. Front apron on number 6 is washed out at the bottom of it and could be a problem if you leave it short. 3 or 4 holes are cart path only to protect them from further damage. They said they were going to punch and sand the driving range this afternoon.

Even from the relatively small amount of rain we got a week ago, Rustic has lost the short fairway on 7 again. #7 is again playing as a 100yd par 3 for the next 6 to 8 weeks at least. RC also has mud in most of the bunkers along the water outflow flats. The #7 fairway is being scraped and reseeded, the mud is quickly being removed. The bunkers on #10 right and #11 left are now in poor condition and will need new sand.

Other than that, the course is actually in much better playing condition than I can remember in quite some time. The greens are being hardened and it seems there is much less watering being done on the green aprons. Now you just can not fly the ball to the middle of the greens and when putting you can really feel the green contours again. That's great! That's how this course is supposed to play.

First time here my first impression was that there is alot of bare and muddy spots but then realized it was due to the heavy rains I like this place but in these conditions it's just OK I'm sure it will get alot better but with more rain comming off the burnt mountians looks like it may get worse before better
