Just came back from our Central Coast Trip. We went Friday, July 30th and played Monarch Dunes, Cypress Ridge (Friday), Hunter Ranch, Morro Bay (SAT) and La Purisima (Sun)


Sadly, this was our last course on our golf trip. We played on Sunday, August 1st (at) 11:10 am. They were running an online special for $57. We heard so many great things about this course, maybe our expectations were so high going in to this course. Customer service was awesome. Allowed us to play as a 5 some as long as we kept up. At at the grill beforehand. Had a nice grill area with specials. I had the Kobe burger, great burger. They only had 1 cashier. She was also the cook. Keep this in mind if ordering food at the turn. The layout of this course winds through canyons. The first thing you notice is the strong winds! This is a tough tough course. They have cut down the rough to 2 inches from last week (it was much higher because of the Impossible Open). The be quite frank, I was disappointed about the greens. They were soft and slow. The holes look straight forward until you hit your tee shot. There are a lot of forced carries, shots over water; uphill shots. Some holes, I was hitting 3 wood into a 180 hole only to be pin high. This is a super tough course, bring your A game of get slaughtered! The course is in the middle of no where. Make sure you get your gas, snacks beforehand.

Played La purisma on friday morning w/stickboy w/a special on their website. They have the course set up for their upcoming tournament "impossible open". We played with a local guy who real nice and gave a lot of local info which was very helpful. If you were off the fairway, you had a tough time finding your ball. The secondary rough was not as bad as you could see it but most times it was sitting down. Everything about the course was great with the exception of the greens being recently aerified. There was some sand still on the green but not enough to cry about. But I felt I should mention it it if someone were to go after reading this. As it has ben said many times, you have to be on your "A" game to do well here. You might get lucky a few times like I did, but with the wind and numerous uphill and downhill stances, and knowing where to hit it, you just have to be prepared to hit those shots. We had a tee time at 9:20, but the very nice girl who was the starter that day let go off at 8:15 before a big wedding tournament. Big ups to her and the La purisma staff.

Does anyone agree with the following...the easiest shot on this course is the very first one. Really. Whether you're left, right or center you'll likely get away with one. It's the one time an "error" is forgiven at La Purisima. Then you're done. Every shot after requires precision and ball control. If you lose focus for even a moment, you pay. Short putt "gimmes" - nope. Even that three footer lips out if you're not careful (sometimes leaving four feet back!). It's just a remarkable golf course in every sense. A challenge like none else I know.

One thought to always keep in mind at La Purisima...you are playing a PGA quality course at a muni price. Everytime I play here, at some point, I stop to reflect on that point. One of the amazing things about La P is just that - the ability to reflect. There's no push or stacked foursomes. In fact, it's desolate - somtimes not a single in sight, front or back, anywhere. It is simply golf at its very best. The course is extremely well maintained and a superb test of YOUR skill. Whether I'm playing well or not, it gets my game juiced. I had a mediocre round today, but struck one of the great shots of my life. I'm sure glad it was here, where golf MATTERS. So to anyone within driving distance....take the day off and make that turn down highway 246. The reward is here.

One of my favorite courses in California. Wonderful design and challenging. Maintenance is reasonably good considering green fee rates. This is must play for any serious golfer in the area.

simply a great course in terms of design and not hiding what has to be done. kept in great shape from greens to fairways. very slow on weekends but during the week fairly wide open and fun to play but very difficult from back. wind is always a factor in PM but usually manageable.

I have played here alot and I guess for the time of the year it is OK shape, but I must say I have seen it better. I love the back 9 on the course.
