Played Dragonfly on 4/20 with an early AM tee time. Social distancing practices are still in play with single person per cart, clubhouse closed and no rakes in the bunkers. They have the cups turned upside down to create a new “permanent” solution to the no reaching into the hole dilemma. The cup sits about an inch below the green with the ball coming to rest on the inverted cup so it sits up. It’s basically a nicer version of the pool noodle around the flag trick.

As far as course conditions go, the greens are back to their great shape and rolling at the perfect medium-fast speed. Rain a couple of days before the round as well as some rain during the round kept the greens soft so they easily held well struck approach shots.
Greens rolled true and smooth.

Fairways are very nice right now. The combination of warm weather and recent rains has the fairways in beautiful condition. Course was in the process of updating all of their sand traps just before the COVID-19 pandemic. If you land in one of the bunkers that had been updated, you’re in for a treat as they have excellent sand. If you are unfortunate and land in one of the few that haven’t been renovated then you screwed as they are hardpacked dirt often littered with pebbles.

Tee boxes were ok. They are all level but it appeared as if most of the tee boxes hadn’t been mowed since the closing of the course a couple of weeks ago. When using a driver and teeing up the ball, it wasn’t an issue. Use a 3 wood or iron off the deck and the un-mowed grass could present a problem.

We went off at 7:12 as the second group. The first group (twosome) was long gone by the time we got to the second (11th ) hole. Dragonfly is only accepting reservations 2 days in advance. I woke up at 5am on Saturday to book the Monday tee time. At 5am there was only the 7:12 tee time at a 4:30 foursome left. However, when we played. The course was fairly empty. What gives? Only a select handful of tee times? Like maybe 16 throughout the day. Or are people booking and not showing up. If that’s the case then the course should charge double for no shows and suspend the players account.

Dragonfly is open and running under the new “social distancing” guidelines. Pro shop is completely closed up with just a kiosk at the starting hole which they elected to send everyone off the 10th tee to start. I chose to walk but everyone else was single player per cart.

Flag sticks were mandatory left in and there were Styrofoam rings in in the bottom of the cup that prevented the ball from going all the way in. No rakes in the bunkers but I did see employee’s coming out a couple times throughout the round to rake bunkers keeping them relatively fresh for everyone. They were also actively wiping down the flagsticks in case anyone inadvertently touched them.

As far as the course conditions go, the greens are still recovering from recent aeration. Not too bad but definitely on the slow side with some greens still visibly showing holes from being punched.

Fairways are starting to turn green from the brown dormant winter grass. Still about a 50/50 light green and brown combo. But fairways were still easy to hit off of. Tee boxes were ok. Some better than others with some still being winter thin.

I was only in one greenside bunker and it was probably the worst one on the course. Lol. Others have been revitalized with new sand but the one I was in was fairly hardpacked.

Pace of play wasn’t too bad actually. Given that there are only a few courses open and this is always a popular valley track the 4:10 round was very acceptable. We fell about a ½ hole behind the group in front for about 6-9 holes then caught up and had some minor waiting for the last few holes.

A quick update from my last review here. Greens are still in great shape and the fairways are dormant but present a good surface to hit from. I noticed that crews were out today doing major maintenance on the sand traps. I was in a couple today that had already been re-done and they were very nice. What was once the Achilles heel of the course is now competing for airtime on the highlight reel. POP was absolutely brutal today. A 5 hour round.

I always enjoy getting in a round at Dragonfly when in the valley. Course is a typical valley layout in that it’s completely flat which makes it easy to walk, though there are some long transfers. Conditions of the course are always good. Its set about 1 ¼ miles off the roadway with no houses or business in sight. There are a couple of water hazards that come into play on about four of the holes. All of which are on the back nine.

The par 5 13th hole has a peninsula green making it a true risk/reward hole for the long hitters who want to try and reach the green in two. For the rest of us it’s a strategic lay up.

Greens were excellent today. They rolled smooth at a medium-fast pace and easily held well struck approach shots. Greens at Dragonfly are very manageable with most being single tiered with little to modest slope. There are a couple of greens that are two tiered with the 7th hole having a 5’ difference between the upper and lower tier of the green.

Fairways have gone dormant but still provide a great surface to hit from. No issues with the tee boxes, level and lush. I assume the tee markers had been moved this morning as even the par 3’s didn’t have any divots.

Staff is continuing to work on the bunkers. I was in two today. One was ok and the other was impressive. Clean white soft sand! I noticed other bunkers throughout the course had similar sand. POP was just under 4 hours.

The only thing keeping this track from being a very nice course is the infrastructure around the course. Pro shop is a rectangular unimaginable building with a “cafeteria” style kitchen. Restrooms throughout the course are State Park style porta potties with septic tank holes under the toilets.

For the once or twice a week special rate of $39, it’s a highly recommended course. For the much higher weekend rate, I’d have to say 50/50.

For the most part the course is the same as my last review a couple of months back. the main exception are the greens. They are starting to slip a bit and are in need of a dusting. I think Dragonfly only aerates their greens once a year. With this years closing of Fig Garden, the course is getting more play and it might (definitely) be time to starting sanding their greens twice a year. Other than the numerous pitch marks all was well.

Fairways, tee boxes and sand traps were good to go and in the same condition as my last review. $35 for a twilight round in the Valley (especially with the current conditions) is a bit steep. For the $39 prime time mid week specials it get bumped up to highly recommended.

Also: In the late afternoon there are a number of high school teams using this course for practice. We were stuck behind three goups who were brutally slow. Not sure why the coaches with them didn't let us through.

I'm all about getting the kids out on the course. And that includes the newbies as well as the scratch High Schoolers about to embark on the PGA/LPGA (a la Noh). I think the course should just close down for a couple of hours like they do with mini tournaments and let the kids have it to themselves. Or start the rest of us on the back nine to mix in with the earlier finishers and let the HS have the front nine to themselves for a while. Just my thoughts is all.

No issues whatsoever with the fairways. Lush and a joy to hit from. Fairways aren't the deepest green in color but don't let that fool you. They are good to go.

Tee boxes are the same as the fairways. Level and lush with divots on the par 3's but still plenty of area to find a good clean hitting surface.

Sand traps were the weak link. Some were thin and a few had numerous small pebbles showing. POP was great. Just under 4 hrs

Greens are back to their normal greens. There was not any noticeable punch marks or anything when I played. They said they did the smaller punches which healed really quick. All in all, the course was in really good shape. We teed off at 6:45am and the round was a little over 4 hours. Played with a dad and his son and they had just taken up the game. But all in all the tee boxes were in really good shape. Fairways were very lush and were wet but still had some roll out in them in the morning. Greens, again were in good shape. Was able to spin shots but held well. Only concern seems to be bunkers which had some pebbles and a couple had noticeably bigger rocks in them. Make sure you take water with you. No water jugs or anything out here, which still baffles me

After a couple of days of playing courses with some great ocean views, it was back to the valley today. Outside of the Palm Springs area, Dragonfly is probably my favorite "flat" course. Yes, the track is flat but they keep things interesting with a mix of left and right dog legs, a handful of water hazards that all come into play, some "waste" areas that divide the fairways and some strategic tree placement that require specific shot shapes. Add in solid conditions all around, and you have the making of a good course. Greens were in their usual top condition. Easily holding approach shots and rolling smooth at a medium fast pace. Compared to Sandpiper and Bodega, the greens were very modest in slope. Whereas the fairways aren't the greenest in color they are definitely very lush and a pleasure to hit from. Tee boxes are level with only the par 3's having some divots (but plenty of nice areas to hit from). I was in two greenside bunkers and one had nice brown soft dirt and the other was excellent with great soft white sand. Dragonfly has a few different price point tiers and I timed it perfectly opting to pay the higher price instead of waiting 10 minutes and going off with the afternoon masses. I jumped out in front of a few people getting ready to head to the first tee. I never had anyone in front of me until my second shot on the 17th!!! That was so worth the extra $10

Wanted to get in a tune up round before Monday's GK cup match up north. Hadn't been out to Dragonfly lately and course is pretty much exactly as CenCalGolfer33 described it. Greens are in decent shape but do have a few bumps here and there from pitch marks and spike marks. The first couple greens were rolling medium fast but then the rest seemed to slow down to a medium-slow pace.

Don't let the color of the fairways fool you. The grass is dormant so most of the fairways are brown. Yet they are still very lush and pleasant to hit off of. First cut off rough is no big deal, only about an inch thick. After that and it's good night. Easily 12"-18" tall grass/weeds. No issues with the tee boxes. Level and lush. Sand traps were full of pebbles and small river rocks. Fortunately I was only in one fairway bunker and avoided the greenside bunkers all day. I did notice that the greenside bunker on 18 looked like it had brand new fresh dirt in it. Hopefully that means they are in the process of updating the rest of the bunkers.

POP was a bit on the slow side but it was a Friday on one of the few dry days so I guess 4 1/2 hours wasn't too bad. Even if we were behind a sixsome.

overall the course was in good shape with no thin or wet areas from the recent rains. A highly recommended Central Valley track.
