This is a course I grew up playing on and it has a special place in my heart. Back when I was a junior golfer I could play 18 holes for $5. Not sure that deal is still there, but even now the deals are pretty good. This course is very well designed and a ton of fun to play. It's not long, except maybe the daunting uphill 1st hole, but the layout is pretty challenging. The fog that hangs in the fairways at this course makes it one of the best golfing experiences in the Bay Area. If you walk you'll get a good workout and the food at the clubhouse is really good. The only downside is this course can get sloppy when it rains.

Warm day and dry. Lots of golfers as the Club is very active. Good to see.

Greens hold nicely, but with poa, are VERY bumpy, slowing putts and sending them off line.. frustrating. The layout is simply a lot of fun. Clubbing important and good views throughout. Pace was as expected with a full field (5 hours) but still a fine day.
The drinks cart was around a lot!!! Good staff too. If you are on the email list (free) you can walk for $25 between 11am-3pm until end of June 08. Carts are $15 per rider.

The best part of Tilden park GC is its scenary and fresh mountain air. Great for getting away from bay area buzz. The overall quality is just ok because when I played it was very foggy and soaked. Not many players so we didn't hit any traffic. Some par 4 are relatively short and straight. I would come again but definetely on a sunny day.

the first hole is the #1 handicap and is HANDS DOWN the hardest first hole in the bay area---at least of the public courses. I played the course about 100 times and birdied the hole less than 5 times, parred out around ten times, bogied countless, and worse from there.

if it were up to me, id flip the front nine for the back as the tenth hole would be a fabulous first and vice versa.

tilden was my home course for 3 years, so i am very fond of it despite some of its pock marks.

tilden was my home course for 3 years, so i am very fond of it despite some of its pock marks.

The positives: beautiful scenery, some very fun holes (i love the twelfth hole from the blues (nothing special from the whites though)), very good super twilight $7 rate.

The negatives:
in the winter the coruse borders on unplayable,

- even in good conditions, the greens are never better than middling,
-the holes are relatviely short even from the blues---very few +400 yard par fours besides the magnificently sloped 3rd hole.
-the course can play at a snail's pace and the ambassadors do NOTHING to speed up play
- many of the tee boxes are less than level

in summary: When this course is dry and on a quiet day, i just love this place---despite being short, the course is challenging as well: even when you flush the ball dead center cut, don't expect your lie to ever be level as the fairways roll and undulate. as of early september ('06), when I last played, I thought that the course in total was in the best condition I had ever seen it.

The only critique that I have is that the staff expedites the check in experience.

I was really disappointed with course conditions. Played there about 3 months ago and things were in fair condition. After my last experiece about 1 month ago I would never return. Tees are pretty messed up and fairways had plentiful bare spots. Too bad, when the course is in shape it's really a great place. Check on conditions before you book.
