Golf Course Reviews: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Hawaii! This is a course I grew up playing on and it has a special place in my heart. Back when I was a junior golfer I could play 18 holes for $5. Not sure that deal is still there, but even now the deals are pretty good. This course is very well designed and a ton of fun to play. It's not long, except maybe the daunting uphill 1st hole, but the layout is pretty challenging. The fog that hangs in the fairways at this course makes it one of the best golfing experiences in the Bay Area. If you walk you'll get a good workout and the food at the clubhouse is really good. The only downside is this course can get sloppy when it rains.
Living in Concord it's hard to find a close by municipal course that gets the job done. Outside of Tilden Park in Berkeley, Lone Tree is probably one of the better places to try out. I'm not a huge fan of Antioch or the people that live there, but Lone Tree has become a favorite course of mine to play. The pace may be a little slow on the weekends, but the price is right and the course is kept in pretty good shape. The holes play fairly straight and the course has some decent changes in elevation.
I choose to save some cash and try a twilight tee time. I like walking when I play and I found myself a few holes into the course with it all to myself. Then out of nowhere I got passed by about five straight twosomes all zipping around in carts trying to squeeze in all 18 by the time the sun set. It was pretty annoying and then a few holes later more people passed me in their carts. Overall my experience was terrible and the course was poorly maintained. There was little definition between fairways and rough and the greens all seemed to be trimmed at different lengths. The layout was decent, although pretty straight and not too hilly. With some better maintenance this could be a decent muni course. Can't recommend this place, unless you like speeding around in a cart playing rushed golf.
