The course has been through the ringer. Currently only 9 holes have been open for this course. According to some of the staff it takes 6-8 weeks to get course back into shape. Greens are soft. You can be aggressive. Fairways are lush. No roll b/c ground is still wet and spongy. Rough is THICK. You will loose balls there. But rough is also spotty so depending, you may or may not find your ball. Tee boxes are flat and they rotate them well enough to prevent the ground from being too bare. Pace of play was blistering. No on playing on Encino however Balboa was filled with several groups waiting at the first tee box -- expect a 6 hour round there. For Encino quite the opposite. Play here in under 2 hours. No on in front and no one in back. Best deal for $19 with the abbreviated set up for 9 holes.

Got out at 7:30 am on MLK day. Holiday & Weekend play is expensive for this muni. As a city resident & walker I still payed nearly $50. There is a lot of good course competition at this price point. This is a decent recreational track which I prefer over it's sister course, Balboa. Several of the tee boxes were uneven...almost creating a feeling of uphill/downhill lies teeing off. The fairways were nice, though not as lush as I would have thought after all the rains. Big leaves are still falling and the ground crew has difficulty keeping up with them. Thus, it is really easy to lose your ball. The greens were a little furry and soft which made the putts a bit slow. But the weather was great and the marshalls helpful. I'll come back...but on a weekday.

Played on 11/7 on super twilight. Got 10 holes in just under 2 hours. Always enjoy playing here. Good course condition, good pace of play, good course to work on your game. I haven't played here in a few months, so I forgot the greens are on the slower side, so my short game was effected for a couple of holes. All in all, for $14 it's a worth every penny.

Great condition for a muni! Course is very green. Rough is very thick and lush in most places, but there are bare sports. Fairways are also green, with a little brown. They were very soft, and I didn't get much roll (played in the mist though). Sand is nice and fluffy. Greens and green and soft, but medium-slow as expected from a muni. Overall a nice course aside from the iffy customer service and price if your not a LA resident.

Played Thursday afternoon and the course is in fine shape. Greens are nice and smooth and the rough and fairways are in good shape. My only complaint is getting something to drink out at these two courses is a pain in the (at) #R$. I wish they would pay someone to stay at the snack bars later, since they raised the fees and all.

Played Encino on Sat. 8/7/2010 in the qualifier for the PLGA/LA City Match Play Tournament. The course was actually in pretty good summer shape for this highly-played muni. Fairways were cut down and pretty lush. Rough was consistent. Sand was raked and in very good condition. The greens were lush but very slow. This is just basic golf. Very easy course where the only real defense is the length of the par 3's (184, 206, 222 & 201 yards) and even then the greens are generous targets. The long par 4's are wide open so good players bomb driver and still have birdie chances. They played it as tough as it can in the qualifier (tees all back, pins relatively tough) and there were still a 64 and four 66's out of the good amateur field. Kinda fun to play in a birdiefest. One course design comment, I would love to see them use the back left tee on the par 5 second. Much better hole from back there at 548 where you have to shape a drive right to left to have a good chance at getting home in two. Seems like they dont use this tee box enough.

Played here Wednesday 7/21 for the first time. Didn't expect much being a muni but were surprised first by the rental cart price..$24 per cart. The reason became obvious when we actually picked it up. They have what are probably the nicest carts we have ever used. No GPS but brand new deluxe in super condition.

The course has no "gift" holes since the par 3s are all long. There was only a single 90 degree dogleg right which required a good tee shot to pass the trees for a clear second shot. Yardage from the whites was about 6400 yards. Not too tough to get on in regulation on the par 5s and the greens putted very true although a little slower than expected downhill. Bunkers were a little rough with some being a little "crusty" while others had some pebbles as well as sand.

Weather finally cooperated and it was much cooler than expected. Not a bad layout and we both agreed that we would play it again.

First time playing this course. We had a tee time around 7 am. It took us just over 4 1/2 hours to play 18. Not bad for a holiday. Course is in good shape. Tee boxes and fairways were in decent shape for a muni. Fairways were a little mushy in spots as the grounds keeper were over watering some of the fairways. Fairways were a little thin in spots but overall in good shape. Bunkers were in good shape today. Due to the drizzle in the morning today, the sand was a little wet. Rough was in decent shape with thin spots here and there. Greens were in great shape. There were unrepaired ball marks here and there, which is not the courses fault.

Course is fairly flat. The par 3s are fairly long here. I was surprised that most of the fairways were fairly wide where you can just grip it and rip it. It was nice they got rid of the old run down (and almost broken) golf carts. Not used to parking the golf carts without the click sound when you park. We saw a lot of people walking the course with the new green fees in effect. Course didn't seem overly busy for a holiday.

Went out this afternoon, 6/9 at 2:30 as a 3-some and got around in a touch under 4 hours. We could see the twilight rate surge on the course behind us. Overall, the course was in very nice shape. Tee boxes were generally very good to excellent: generally flat and well covered and no bare, chewed up areas. Fairways tend towards shorter vs. lush, but no noticable bare areas and a fair amount of roll, which is to be expected on these SF Valley munis. No complaints there. In one bunker and it was in good shape. The large greens were a medium fast pace and in very nice shape -- a minimum of pitch marks and rolled pretty true. Fortunately for me, the rough was mostly not too challenging, but not bare either. As a pretty straight forward muni, I thought the course was in very good shape. If you like this course, now is a good time to play it. As an aside, we saw a little wildlife drama. A coyote jogged about 20 yards by me as I approached the 5th green. My partners called my attention as I set up to putt, and when I looked back, watched as the coyote spotted a squirrel out crossing in the middle of the fairway. The coyote cut him off from the trees as the squirrel made an obviously doomed dash, and the coyote finished him off just feet from the nearest tree trunk. Life and death in the big city. Kinda sad, because you could see early on that the squirrel was screwed. Would've liked to see him close enough to the trees to make it a contest.
