Back to Roosevelt after four months for a twilight round and was happily rewarded with a best-ever 38 from a course that's always miffed me. Nothing but bogeys and pars so that was a good feeling avoiding lots of places to get in trouble. I wish conditions were as good as my wedges today. The fairways are pretty good but quite a few areas are either dried out or muddy. The rough was actually a pretty good length to work from, but keep it there or invite loads of mayhem in the trees and bushes. Bunkers are thin and the tee boxes are very chewed up but flat. The greens were really bad. Very fuzzy, big, chunky ball marks everywhere and a lot of moss or other weird flora growing out of them and making them crazy bumpy and very slow. Not great. Had they been better I have no doubt I would have sunk 2-3 more putts. Just about to do some winter upkeep? Let's hope so. Still, my good round made up for all the rest. I still always enjoy this track for its challenge and unique layout for a nine hole. Price is right and it's a good value for the money still.

Played Friday. It was empty. I would happen to think it was because of an event at the Greek. I think it was Trainor in concert.

Place was NOT packed. It's a shortie for a 9 hole course but very tight. Greens are slow and held line OK. Had to put firmly to keep ball online and headed to the hole. Fairways were lush. Rough was thick in spots and short under trees, a mixed bag. Loads of overgrown trees with pine needles underneath so expect thin lies under the trees and thick rough around the tree trunks. Tee boxes were relatively flat.

Walked the course. Hard to figure out a few of the holes with several blind spots. My suggestion play it short and hope for the best you can still reach the short par 4s in two. Never played this course before and honestly I was suprised at the conditions. Though not perfect it's still a great design with decent playable conditions.

Play here again? Only at twilight. Paying $16 to play is rather steep for a short course.

Finally made it back to the Roosevelt for a Wed twilight round with a buddy. $16 from the blues for one of the toughest 9 holes you'll likely play is a good deal. This course always ate me alive during my early years, so I was excited to see if my improvements in my game would turn the tide. Nope! Still posted a crappy score, but saving grace was finally conquering my ultimate menace hole - #8. Had never done better than double bogey, but actually just missed birdie putt but triumphantly took the par. Course is in pretty good shape, especially for the animals. Deer and a rattlesnake coiled up next to the tree behind the green on 1, rabbits and squirrels on 3, coyotes on 5, more deer on 8, and a large, friendly lizard on 7. It's a zoo! Fairways had good coverage in the best part of the fairways, but you can find some thin lies and even standing water in quite a few areas. The rough is brutal thick in places, and of course if you're in the sticks be extra careful with the rattlers. Tee boxes pretty chewed up on a few too many holes, but at least very even for the most part. Didn't find any bunkers but seemed average at best. And the greens? Not too shabby! A few ball marks to contend with but mostly well-covered and decent rolls. There is one awful slice across the back of the 7th green that may be where a sprinkler or something was fixed, but it's a nice sized scar to avoid at all costs. Greens seemed receptive enough as well. My chance to break the course record will have to wait, but if I find myself in the area again, won't hesitate for a second to go back.

Roosevelt was my "main event" for the day. In other words, nobody should be too jealous of my short course blitz days : ) I had booked a GN hot deal at 12:24 for $18, which is a slight savings as a non-resident. Basically, all the LA City courses are just offering one pre-paid time a day right now and unfortunately, they are stringent about when you start. I was there early in hopes of getting out ahead of my time, and though there were openings, the guy made me wait until closer to my tee time. I did end up going off about 10 minutes early after a bunch of foursomes (and a fivesome or two) went out while I waited. Total pace for the 9 holes was around 2 hours, 15 minutes. The course is in pretty decent overall shape, highlighted by the greens. They were in very good shape, though not enough people here fix their ball marks. Tee boxes fine. Fairways were a mix of 70% really, really good and 30% terrible. No in between. When there were bare patches they were big and either really sandy or muddy. Rough was kind of the same way, either lush and thick or bare dirt/sand/mud. I was in one bunker. Way too many unraked footprints, but the sand was decent. Roosevelt certainly isn't on the same level as Wilson and Harding, but it offers similar Griffith Park charm as the 9-hole executive little brother on the south side of the park. Fun layout with a lot of hills and doglegs. Some great views, but it obviously gets a lot of play from golfers of all levels, so you can expect a slow-ish round and poor etiquette when it comes to ball marks and sand traps.

As mentioned, greens just punched and still lots of holes and sand. Slow.
Fairway for the most part in good shape. I did see some areas that are bare ground.
Bunkers have lots of sand (at least the one I was in) but please... rake the bunkers... I don't know when was the last time this was raked as it looked like the moon crater! haha..
Pace was not bad. We were moving along and the only wait was at the bottleneck #6 hole.

Overall a great design and enjoyed playing this course.

Since I play Roosevelt so often, I wouldn't normally write a review of this nice, executive 9-hole but today, I finally got a hole in one on #9 (162 yards). Watching it roll about 20 feet right into the hole was a sight to behold. The course is in good shape, relatively speaking, and I recommend it to people in the area. There are no fivesomes to slow things down, and the course design is hardly boring, with the 6 par 4s very distinct from one another.

Played 11/20 in am with three friends. Course is in fair "muni" shape. Not as well maintained as Penmar or Harbor, but close. Fairways are brown and muddy in places. Tee boxes were chewed up. Greens were very good, but slow. The staff is efficient and nice. It was not packed, but steady with golfers. No driving range but a small cage area to warm up.

Some interesting holes with nice views of the Griffith Park Observatory and downtown. Very quiet ... spotted a couple of coyotes just chilling out under a tree.

Overall, a good deal - 9 holes for $14.50 ($7.25 replay). Pace of play was about 2 hours each 9 we played. Keep expectations low and enjoy it.

Bonus Info: I used to live in this neighborhood and had some time to kill before playing so I stopped at my favorite breakfast joint in LA, The House of Pies. It's on Vermont, just south of Los Feliz Bvld. Great food, prices and service.

I have played Roosevelt many times over the last 12 months, and despite playing at various "full" 18-hole courses in LA and Orange County, I still find Roosevelt to be sufficiently challenging and never boring, due to the varied design of the par 4s. Recently, the greens overall seem to be in better condition, and the pace of play, especially in the mornings, is fine. In the afternoons, I do notice that you could get stuck behind a foursome full of beginners with little knowledge about how to efficiently navigate a golf course.

Played yesterday about noon. PoP was good for being fairly busy.
Tees- Most of the tees were under repair so blues and whites were at front of the box. This caused the tees to be rough but still playable.
Fairway- They weren't bad for mid-winter. Thin but green, few bare spots.
Greens were adequate, rolling med. fast, and mostly holding the line. Not many divots for a muni!!
Basically, it was well maintained, typical muni conditions. Worth the price.
