Nice to be back in Southern California and playing "home" While it's only been a week or so since I played here, felt longer. Greens, fairways, bunkers all excellent. Some areas in the rough need attention however.

Lots of maintenance, but not many players? Maybe everyone was home watching the Masters?

I decided that whatever it took, I was going to play Coto today ! After over a 3 1/2 hour frost delay, was finally able to get out. ( Frost every day since last Friday ) It was "different playing on dry fairways, the ball actually ran out so the course played much shorter than it does at 6am in the dark/cold/wet I am accustomed to playing in.

The greens had just been punched and sanded, but they actually rolled very well and fairly quick. In few a few days when the sand is gone, I know they will be bumpy. Fairways being dormant, provided some extra rollout, but were just fine to play from. Bunkers as always were great, rough was only so/so.

I get tired of paying $1000 a month in dues and getting frosted out so often. But I suppose I could just wait until 9 o'clock and play in the crowds, but that's not why I joined a private club. Ah - feels good to vent a little !

Finally, after frost delays on Wed, Thurs, Friday, and even today Sat ( On the south course) able to play in the morning. Crazy, that even on days when it's going to be in the mid 70's ,to have frost... Continue »

Of course with the firm greens due to the cold, they then cut and roll them making them nearly unputtable. ( Super firm and fast) Fairways are good, bunkers excellent.

I guess because the South was delayed, the north was packed, even at 6am.

I understand from reading recent reviews on various other courses that the greens on a number of courses are firm and fast. Hey it's winter and I get that. But I have played a number of "away" cours... Continue »

I understand from reading recent reviews on various other courses that the greens on a number of courses are firm and fast. Hey it's winter and I get that. But I have played a number of "away" courses over the past few months, and none are as ridiculously unfair as the greens are on Coto north. I checked with the super and learned some are running 15 on the stimp. That's crazy fast. On several holes, it's almost like miniature golf, where the ball comes back to you if it does not go into the hole. Over the past few rounds I can't tell you how many balls I have putted off the green, and I mean from only 10-15 feet away.

Makes no sense because the greens on the south course are also very fast, but at least fair,


The rest of the course is fine, despite the absence of rain, fairways are still fairly green and lush. No issues with the rough, tees, bunkers, etc.

With all the recent winds, the course was dry so I actually got some roll on my tee shots, which is a pleasant change from the typical mornings. However the greens were super quick and offset any advantage I had with hitting shorter clubs into the greens.

Courses is in nice shape right now, but with the dry conditions, my concern is that any cold spell will cause frost, which is the one thing which prevents me from playing

Out very early this morning as only the North Course was open due to a ladies event on the South. Even at 5:20am, there were people there preparing to play. Rather nippy (48 degrees) I'm remembering now how short the ball travels in the colder temperatures.

Course is in nice shape right now. Greens running fairly quick and true. Fairways green and plenty of grass. Bunkers rather compacted, but lots of sand. Overall, no issues.

Played the North on Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat, in part because the South was closed for maintenance, but more because the greens are really nice right now. Very Fast & Pure. Overall the course is in good shape, so it has been a pleasure to play. The only downside is it gets light so darn late and more and more people are out trying to get a round in before work, so being a walker, I have to deal with a lot of singles in carts rushing to finish quickly.

Can't wait for the time change !

Just two weeks ago, after they had punched the greens, they were borderline unplayable, but actually they had totally healed in only a little over a week, and now they are just as good as they were prior to the maintenance. I spoke with the super, and he advised they tried something new: First using a large 5/8 tine, then two days later re-punching with a small tine, which pushed the holes closed somewhat. Whatever he did, it worked because they healed in about 7-10 days.

They fairways, bunkers, tees are in good shape. A few areas in the rough could use some attention, but nothing bad. Since they no longer overseed, course looks and plays well.

Made certain I'd played the North a few times over the past week, because it will be closed all next week to punch/sand the greens. Fortunately they no longer over seed the fairways as they had for the first 25 years I was a member. It cuts the "down" time in half for the course to recover, and the only downside is the grass is dormant during the winter months.

Of course the greens are excellent right now, but that will all change. Necessary, but frustrating because it seems that when the greens are at their best, then comes the punching. Fairways looking very nice, so pleased they are not overseeding.
