Played a birthday round this week, and the conditions here are the best I've played anywhere all year. Its been almost a year since the new management took over, and they've improved the conditions, which were always very good anyway, to a much higher level. The groundskeeping is excellent, and the conditions are near perfect. They did punch some of the fairways within the last month, but on almost all the holes they've recovered, and those that still how the signs of the arreation, the lie was not affected. I really love this course for its peacefulness (its not often that the airbase next door is active), and for its location. There's a wide open stretch from here to the beach, so while you do get afternoon wind (or even morning wind), its keeps the place much cooler than elsewhere further inland. I'm very happy to be a member here, and I love that they appreciate the uniqueness of their landscape, and work to keep it up. Its not a "grass+nice trees" kind of place, but a true arboretum and bird sanctuary. One note, a previous reviewer was disappointed they couldn't eat in the restaurant, I wanted to point out they played on a Monday, which is the course's day off. Many Monday's they host an outside tournament, though other times they open somewhere between 10 or noon for the regular members, however, the restaurant and staff have the day off. Otherwise, I recomment the food and bar they have here (though you need to be a guest of a member to enjoy it). Its a fairly casual and young membership base here, and is quite accomadating to families. I look forward to this summer here.

Played Old Ranch at an SCGA shotgun outing on 3/21. Had a great time being paired with a couple of fun guys. Overall, the course is in great shape. Fairways, sand traps, rough, tee boxes, all exceptional. The greens were not really fast but they rolled true. Don't know for sure but it seems like they had done their aeration several weeks ago and they are almost fully recovered otherwise, I am sure they could be really fast. What make the greens challenging is the many undulations, two tiers, and slopes built into them and I can see many 3 putts happening. There is water on some of the holes and shouldn't really come into play (even though I found one lake! Nice eh?). The course is excellent and a lot of fun. This is not a real difficult track but the back 9 is a tighter, more so than the front. A lot of trees line the fairways on the back and quite a few narrow holes making it very challenging. Being fairly close to the ocean, we got some mid-afternoon winds. I imagine wind is a daily occurrence here and it can make a 1 or 2 club difference. The staff in the clubhouse were very accommodating and were great hosts. We weren't allowed to go into the restaurant after for a bite to eat which was disappointing but understandable. We had to eat outside at the snack shop and it was pricey. $5.00 for a can of Bud Light is a bit steep! Would love to come back one day.

I'm a member, so I'm somewhat biased. This course has gone through 3 management changes since I've been there. Originally it was owner-run, then they leased the place to a national management company that was later bought out by another, larger management company. While I'm a fan of the food, service and other non-golf amenities (pool, locker room, gym), I'm very happy that their focus is the course. Within the last year they've replaced every bunker, and now they're near perfect. The greens are always nice, and rather difficult. Hole 10, which is the 18-handicap hole, is straight and short, yet the green is the hardest on the course. 3 and 4 putts are quite common. Other greens are also hard, you can lose the chance at a par simply by landing on the wrong part of the green. The layout is very nice, and the tips offer an extra challenge. I like their landscaping too. Lots of trees, very nice plants, etc.. This is protected area as it serves as a water runoff for the military base next door. Lots of birds hang out here, including many hawks and eagles, which are fun to see. The membership is quite affordable too. Its a mid-tier club, unlike the stuffy and expensive Virginia country club.
