Oh balboa we certainly have a love/hate relationship. You love me because I keep coming back and I hate you because you wreck my scorecard. Played this morning about 10 and got off right about on time and finished in 5 hours. It didn't feel like it took that long but the was a little waiting on the front and after 6 it picked up slightly. We finished and the group behind us was still on the 17th green.

Greens were pretty good. Mostly smooth but I did have a few bumpy ones. The rolled at a medium pace. They didn't strike me as blazing fast but some putts seemed to roll more than others.

Fairways were ok some bare spots but for the most part pretty good. Rough was patchy. A couple of lies were just not very good, I could just not predict what the ball would do when I hit it. I was in several bunkers and the sand didn't look good but actually decent.

Played BPGC a couple times in the last few days, conditions are good. Greens are fantastic, bunkers very nice, rough is there, fairways are mostly very good and the tee boxes are so-so. They have a wi... Continue »

Played BPGC a couple times in the last few days, conditions are good. Greens are fantastic, bunkers very nice, rough is there, fairways are mostly very good and the tee boxes are so-so. They have a winter special right now Monday thru Thursday twilight starts at 11, $19 for city card holders $24 for everyone else. I went off at 11:45 yesterday and finished at 3. The cart path project is still going with holes one playing from 170ish and hole 2 playing at 350ish . . . I just dropped my ball and acted like I had hit a poor tee shot and was hitting 2 from there on both holes.

Played Saturday so Jim's review is pretty consistent with my thoughts. I think the only difference between his and mine was I did get any roll out there on the drives. I remember a couple where the ball came back (how did I put backspin on a driver?). We actually played it is lift, clean and play. Lots of mud balls out there.

Pace of play was excellent finished in 4 hours. As far as the cart path project there is co create poured on some of these areas so hopefully this will be over soon.

Played the Dick Hansen Memorial tournament this morning. Dick was long time president of our club, a great guy and incidentally one of my partners in the first tournament I played here. So I never miss this one.
Tee boxes: small, a bit rough, a little uneven, beautiful!
Fairways: wet, but still with a bit of run, all my lies from the fairway were good, a couple tight ones but that's the way they were cut, it was all grass
Rough: wet, thick with some muddy spots, not the place to be
Bunkers: all with good coverage and manicured, but the sand was mostly wet. I got in one later in the round and it was perfect
Greens: excellent, rolling well and excepting shots

Like the prior reviewer, I played Saturday morning (at 9 am), in a friendly threesome. First time playing here, visiting from LA, and overall, I enjoyed the course. The greens were FAST, especially compared to muni's in LA county, and there are interesting and challenging holes throughout the course. If you carry and walk, like I did, be prepared for some serious hiking. My only disappointment was some thin areas on the fairways less than 100 yards from the green; these lies sometimes required clipping the ball just perfectly, which I find very hard to do. I wish those areas were more lush. But otherwise, the POP was good and worth the price ($50).

Played Saturday morning and a little nervous after rat's review but holes 2 and 3 were open. We played the blue tees and on hole 3 itwas up to the white marker and on hole 4 all the tees were behind the 3rd green which is I think where the red markers are. I thought the tee boxes were a tad shaggy could use a little trim but really not that bad.

Greens were really great. I was pretty surprised how fast they were. I think the 4 green was a little patchy but I don't remember any other bad spots on any other greens. I thought they were pretty smooth too.

Rough is really non existent here unless you consider the canyon. Don't remember being in a trap but they seemed fine.

Pace of played was 4:15. Overall it was enjoyable. Just hope this cart path project does tear up too much of the course.

Played twilight again today, $19 to walk can't pass it up on days off! Conditions are still about the same as my last review. I just wanted to tell anyone interested in playing Balboa that they have begun their cart path project and today the 2nd and 3rd holes were reduced to short par threes. I can imagine that as they progress around the course so will this kind of rerouting set-up. I already see they are putting the new cart path on hole #3 in a horrible place, right side of the hole a third of the way up the side hill. That is exactly where many, many shots go and will now bounce up into the bushes! I hate cart paths!

Played twilight both Friday the 31st and yesterday.
Tees: a bit rough, but playable
Fairways: Friday dry and running, yesterday after the weekend rain wet, in need of a mow and soft, a few driver shots actually backed up
Rough: thick, plush, again , dry on Friday (so easier to play from) and wet yesterday (so not so easy)
Bunkers: good sand, mostly well groomed, a bit hard and wet yesterday
Greens: rolled better yesterday, but they probably had gotten less play on a wet Monday compared to Friday
POP: On Friday we were the second group out at 1:40 for twilight finished in a little over 4 hours. Yesterday, it was like our own private country club, we played in a little over 3 1/2hrs all walking.
Overall: The course is in real good shape, the greens are close to perfect. I played Torrey North on Saturday and Balboa is in comparable if not better shape.

Greens were a bit slow this morning. Tee boxes are a bit rough, the rough isn't, the fairways are hit and miss. Bunkers looked fine, POP 4 hrs.
