We were fortunate to have been invited to play this Ted Robinson Sr. course out in Westlake Village. Upon driving up the parking lot, there was a bag drop but given it was a short trek to the proshop, we decided to carry our clubs in rather than wait for an attendant. They have a grass driving range with Nike PD practice balls. there was a chipping area and huge practice green. The course is composed of 3 9 hole courses. We were assigned Lake/Valley combo which we are told was scenic and fun to play. True but they forgot to mention - it was quite a challenge too! Fairways were undulating and tend to slope to one side on some of the opening holes. Course is well maintained and not a bare spot to be seen. There were some weed patches on the some of the fairways but they were mowed down that they should not affect play. Opening hole on the valley has us literally hitting a fairway with a huge valley cutting across the fairway (see photos). Green speed was not reflective of the practice green and we struggled in finding the speed on the first half of play. We found the greens a tad slower than the practice greens. And reading these greens became quite a task with some breaks going the opposite of what seem like the low point of the green. Some of the rough around the greens that have water protecting them were mowed down to pretty much nothing and on occasion that your ball failed to reach the green and given the slope of the rough, your ball will pick up speed going back into the water hazard. Reminds me of Augusta. Did I say the course played quite difficult ? (just noticed the slope rating for white tees 130) esp for us since it was the first time playing here. Enjoyed the layout and some memorable holes. Some holes have huge mansions right next to the fairways that made it quite intimidating and strays are sure to hit them. This is the first private course that I have ever played that actually has GPS installed in carts which was a lot of help for non-members. Staff was super from check in until we finished. We were instructed to maintain a pace of 2 hours for each 9 hole and upon finishing the first 9, the proshop lady came out to thank us for keeping pace and upon finishing the round came back out to let us know they appreciated us playing. Fact is that they get a few guests who do not follow the pace of play and ending up holding up play for the entire course. Overall it was a fun experience and will definitely come back.. maybe get to play the Oak course.
