Played here yesterday (3/21) with my father in law on a 10AM tee time in absolutely perfect weather in the Verde Valley. The last time I played here, the course was still in rough winter shape, but with the snow all melted and the sun out, the course superintendent has done a magnificent job getting the areas that matter green and lush; fairways and greens! The course is a great little test of golf and the pace here is almost always less than 4 hours. On to the conditions...

Tee boxes: Nothing egregious to note; a few chewed up areas but I would say 85% of people here play the white tee boxes.

Fairways: Amazingly lush and visually stunning, especially since they contrast against the areas of native plant/vegetation that is all around this course. Never had a bad lie, roll was great, and ball sat up just enough for good shots.

Rough: The rough I was in wasn't very penal. The native vegetation is far more penal, as are the areas where the grass simply won't grow.

Bunkers: I was playing well enough to not find a single bunker (this course isn't loaded with them anyways) but from what I could see they were fine; mostly dirt-like sand and not pearl white Augusta sand.

Greens: Wonderful. Held shots well, ran very smooth and fast at times, with tricky breaks and pulls from the surrounding mountain range. A pleasure to make a three putt on!

ETC: Course just got an infusion of brand new carts (still gas powered probably because there are no cart pats "per se") that have comfortable white leather seats and good movement on them; far better than the older ones that barely started. Pro shop has everything you could need including demo drivers (MAVRIK, Ping, TaylorMade) that you can borrow for your round (when you leave your driver's license). Food area seemed open and hopping (AZ being AZ) but no cart service here so load up before the round. Casual dress code here as this place plays more like a muni. As mentioned pace is always good here (they have three reminders on the course of where you should be at the hour mark and expect you be done in 4 hours) and today was only 3.75 hours. If you are near Sedona visiting, this place is 15 minutes into town, give it a shot!

Played here yesterday 12/13 on a literally freezing 9:30am tee time. When we showed up there were only 4 cars (all workers) in the lot and the pro shop told us there was a small frost delay and that we would be second out. By the time 9:25am came around, the "group" (2 people) in front of us had teed off and we went right after, finishing in just a shade over 3 hours. The biggest surprise was seeing the lot when we finished (in a warm 52 degrees); packed to the gills with cars and golfers. Point being, if golf can survive on this less than stellar track in freezing weather, it better make it everywhere else. Sadly conditions here were not that great.

Tee boxes: Not sure why when there is such a big area to chose from, the grounds crew decides to shove tee markers in a corner that is already divot-damaged. The white tees today were just okay; nothing noteworthy in a positive or negative sense.

Fairways: The best part of today. In spite of the subfreezing temps before the sun came out, the fairways thawed (yes, thawed) well and the ground wasn't concrete. Excellent roll as you can imagine and minimal divot damage. Visually pleasing as well, since there was good color and contrast from the otherwise yellow parts of the course.

Rough: No real rough to speak of, more of the gullies and riverbeds and canyons. The rough that does exist is normal length, and no more penal than half a club.

Sand: Not in any bunkers today, but this course doesn't feature too many of them. They aren't the best conditioned ones either, as they have more compact and coarse dirt-like sand which is not ideal for shot shaping.

Greens: The last two or three times I have played here, the greens here were excellent. However, today they were fairly poor (especially early on) as they were frozen to begin with and lightning quick with shots bouncing off the green....transitioning to fairly slow with massive swatches of turf damaged either by the frost or some sort of fungus, but they weren't good.

ETC: Gas powered carts here that could use a tune-up. Routing here is on dirt, not a paved cart path so get your chiropractor on standby after the round. Layout is fun and if conditions improved, this place would be a great step-brother to the courses in Sedona.

Played here 5/16 as the last of three rounds in Northern AZ, which included Oakcreek CC and Seven Canyons. Not many people outside of the Cornville area will ever play this course, but it deserves a look if you are in to playing as many different courses as possible. This track offers wonderful greens year round, even if everything else on the course is only in good condition (sort of like Sterling Hills in Camarillo - and no that is not a knock).

Tee boxes: Good shape playing the tips here that top out around 6500 yards. You can tell the black tees don't get much attention, but even then they were more than passable.

Fairways: Good shape, incredible amount of roll. I had a few drives and layups I thought were in great spots on the fairway roll right into the rough. Also remember this course is over 3K feet above sea level so there may be something to that as well.

Rough: Not much of it to be found on the course, but that rough that IS present is medium level length and penal as expected, but nothing that will make you think twice about just clubbing up and being careful.

Sand: Was not in any sand today but this course has the dirt-like reddish sand that I don't particularly enjoy hitting out of, so fair thee warned.

Greens: As mentioned, the greens are the star at this course. They are in excellent shape with a roll so true it feels like pool table felt in it's best areas. Few divots exist and there really isn't any trickery to the them; the test here is how smart you play the speed and being above/below the hole.

ETC: AZ has (on paper at least) the same COVID-19 restrictions/practices in place that CA does, but you can tell that most people around here are far more skeptical of said restrictions and seem to go about their business as usual. The workers, however, are doing things as best they can with face masks, etc. Course rates are fair, and carts here are gas powered (though a bit touchy). Layout is fun with some water in play and a handful of very cool holes (namely 3, 9, 10, and 17). Recommended if you are in the area.

Played here 12/28 with my partner's father on a visit to Northern Arizona. This was one of the only golf courses in the immediate area of his home so we took a chance on a 36 degree day and made a 9:30 tee-time (I believe the earliest they let people out is 9AM). We showed up at 9AM and were sent out right away so that allowed us to finish in less than 3.5 hours going at our own pace and letting a single pass us early on. This place gets A LOT of singles so if you visit, be prepared to let them through as they all play insanely fast, and anyone who knows or has played me knows I am Lee Treviño-quick out there. I wasn't sure what to expect knowing the cold weather, previous snow/rain days before, lack of real investment in the course, etc. and I was somewhat surprised to see it green out there and playable. This course will not blow you away and they are very casual/bare bones in some aspects but it may be worth a visit whether you are sixpez or not.

Tee boxes: Somewhat better than good. The grass here was cut fairly level and the ground was also level for the most part. I had no issues driving my tee into the turf even as the ground was a degree or two from frozen.

Fairways: Take a look at the photos; they had good color and decent coverage. The grass was cut short and roll was abundant as the surface was slick and quick. I don't remember too many bad lies, however it was winter and we did play lift, clean, replace on the areas where the water had abused the land.

Rough: Not overly penal, in fact I can't really remember having any issues with it. The natural land around the red steaks were far more penal, although even those weren't terrible and you could potentially hit out of them when needed as the banks were dry.

Bunkers: I rated them good but I actually wasn't in one all day amazingly. I don't recall seeing very many of them so I don't think they are a big factor out there. My playing partner was in one and he hit well out of it.

Greens: Good and quick to start with speeds minimizing as the sun and winds appeared towards the turn. The turf on the greens seemed good as roll was devoid of bumps or divots, however I am curious how they would play in good weather.

ETC: Staff was very friendly, from pro shop to snack bar. No starter, cart attendant, or marshal; as I mentioned this place is bare bones. Pace was insanely quick and could have been quicker, of course most of that is due to season and weather. Layout was good, however I am not a fan of holes where you are forced to lay up no matter what club you have in your bag or shot in your arsenal. A fair amount of water in play including my favorite #10. Views here are fantastic from the south as well as the red rocks to the north. This is not a destination course by any means and you are probably better off driving a bit further north to Sedona, but if you are around Cornville (yes that's really the name of the town), stop on by and check it out on a good deal.
