While in Phoenix last week, I got a chance to play a few courses, Aguila, located in South Phoenix, actually in Laveen, on 35th Ave and Baseline is another one of my favorite places to play while in Phoenix. It is somewhat hilly, but easy to walk. It is part if the City of Phoenix Municipal Golf Courses. It has 4 tee boxes, Black (7,089 72.8/128), Silver (6,403 70.1/124), Gold (5,592 74.5/128), and Green (5,442 71.6/120). Water came into play on 4 holes. This is Desert Golf at its finest. I think it is one of the newest of the Phoenix Municipal course and it a great track. Fairways are hard and the ball runs forever. Greens are well kept but the rough area has that desert bushy area. Keep the ball in play and you will be reward. Staff is very nice, and helpful. Has a great training area, a driving range, and chipping green next to the 1st tee box. Don’t have time for 18, has a great 9 hole Executive course next to the 18 hole one. Both are well kept, and for the price, it’s a steal. I have played it about 4 times and each time I have played with locals all over the Phoenix area that love the course. This is also a muni course, ran by the city, they close early, and they have been known to lock your car inside their gate. I have walked it and rode it. If its not to hot, it is a beautiful walk, but a nice ride also. Target golf and very challenging. Lots of fun and a great view.

I played Aguila 8/2 at 747 am. The course was not overly busy for a Saturday morning.
The course was pretty much the same as when I played it 4 months ago. For a municipally run course you could do far worse considering the price. Of all the munis in the Phoenix area I consider Aguila the most enjoyable.
Pace of play was an issue today with a slow foursome causing a back up. I did not see a ranger at all. The beverage cart was out and we saw her 4 times during the round.
I like the play ability of Aguila and it's layout because it's challenging without beating you up.

I played Aguila for the first time on 4/10/14. I was able to get a 0910 time for under $30. As said with other reviews, customer service is not the strong point of the golf course but it is a muni so it is expected. The staff was friendly but it wasn't a high end course with attendants at the bag drop or somebody to clean your clubs at the end of the round. These types of things aren't overly important to me so it doesn't affect my opinion of the course. I didn't see a beverage cart during the round so be prepared.
The practice range was large and balls were inexpensive and good quality. The range is on the way to the first tee with the chipping/putting area right next to the range.
The course has a slight desert feel to it without being too penal. In some ways it reminds me of Vistal but in much better condition. If you spray your tee ball way off line you will be in the desert but the fairways are wide and offer forgiving areas if you are not dead on. I thought the course was challenging yet playable at the same time. If you are slightly off line with a tee shot you still have a chance to recover and make a par.
The course has two fun and "driveable" par 4s. Both have water in front so the safer play is to hit an iron and be left with about 100 yards in. I liked the 4s with the varying lengths. The par 3s were challenging and varying lengths. The par 5s were also varying lengths with some definitely reachable in two shots.
The rough was nearly non-existent brown grass but still playable. The tee boxes were all level and in good shape with a couple exceptions on the par 3s. The greens were what stood out on the municipal course. They were in great shape and very consistent throughout. They were able to hold a shot and were good to putt on.
Overall, I think Aguila is a great course especially considering it is a municipal course. It was fairly busy on the day I played but I was still able to get in at about 4 hours. I will definitely keep it in my rotation of places to play in the winter/spring in the Phoenix area.

Played 1/31. Got an online rate of $47. Included green fee & cart. Aguila is a very nice course. The Black tees play at 7089 yards which gives you 4 Par 4's that are 454-471 yards. The course was designed by Gary Panks, who also designed The Legacy. Aguila has some tight fairways, but ample rough. Off the edges of the course is cleared out desert that has some native plants, but finding your ball should be no trouble.

The conditions overall were very good. Tee boxes were in good shape and level. Fairways were over seeded and firm. Rough is dormant bermuda cut short. Sand traps were very good. The fairway traps had plenty of sand and had low faces on them. This gives you a good chance to advance your ball to the green. Greens were in good shape. I thought they were med-fast and some were a little bumpy.

Aguila has a large practice range, a nice chipping area w/ sand trap, and a very large practice putting area. The course is located in the City of Laveen, but according to the card it is run by the City of Phoenix Park & Rec. Dept. Currently there isn't much you can expect as far as service goes. They do have a grill in the Clubhouse at the turn. No beverage cart or outside service. (They did have a hiring sign on the Pro shop door.) Still, that wouldn't stop me from playing this course again. It was a good deal during the peak of the AZ golf season with the Phoenix Open in town. Aguila G. I played here on 10-24-12. The course just opened up after overseeding. Wow it has come in nice ! The greens look great, but need a couple more cuts before they have their normal speed. They are also very soft and held shots from every club. The fairways are also soft and drives are getting very little roll. They are still on summer rates , so I walked 18 after noon for $10. Best kept secret in town ! FYI, the course will be hosting the boys and girls AZ high school golf state championships this weekend.
