Played March 1. This used to be a private "For Men Only" course designed by Fred Couples. Just a gimmick to get people to drive that far. About half an hour south of Tempe in Maricopa, across the hiway from The Duke. The course is littered with sand traps and waste areas. The sand in the traps was very good, the waste areas were firm making shots out of them easy. Some holes are lined from tee to green with sand. On several holes you have to work the ball between them. A nice layout, they moved a lot of dirt since the area is flat. The fairways were not over seeded, but still playable. Greens and tee boxes were good. Ak Chin Casino just bought the course and will have stay and play packages. They will put the course back into great shape. I enjoyed the course and will be back. Did I mention the traps?

Southern Dunes is an exceptional value playing in August as I did. This course use to be private club and it shows. No houses in sight, just pure golf. It is kept in very good condition, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The fairways are large with generous landing areas for those less than perfect tee shots, and this is a fun and challenging layout. Most of the greens are well protected by bunkers, but they all have logical bailout areas for those attempting to play safe. They have a really nice practice area as well as a clubhouse and grill. Check out this course.

Do you like sand? The ranger informed me that most courses have an average of 2 acres of sand in their bunkers. Southern Dunes has 12 acres of sand! Fred Couples helped design this formerly private club that's now open to the public. Every hole had some sort of bunker to be avoided, most holes had numerous bunkers to be navigated en route from tee to green. The sand quality was very good . . nice and fluffy! I really liked this course. The customer service was great, and this is definately a thinking golfer's challenge. Not a "grip it and rip it" course by any means. You always have to be thinking a shot or a couple shots ahead on this course. The conditions were very good. Tee boxes were nice and lush, fairways were great, the greens had been punched about 3 weeks ago, and were in very good condition. And the sand in the bunkers . . very nice! This course is off the beaten path, about 15 miles southeast of Chandler, but well worth the drive. I will definately be back and play this course again. It ranks very highly in my favorites in the Phoenix area.
