In a nutshell, the course is visually intimidating. Nearly every hole, you stand on the tee box and have to think about which club to use and where to put it. Bunkers have been strategically placed all through the fairways and around the greens, and the fairways are lined with waste areas and desert fescue, so there is little margin for error on most shots.

The course itself is gorgeous. Tee boxes were a 9/10, fairways 8/10, rough 9/10 (and one of the few east valley courses that actually has rough). Greens were extremely fast and very deceptive. Get on the wrong tier and two putts are great escape. Only negative on the course itself were the myriad of bunkers; some were in excellent condition, but a number of others had little sand in them that made escape treacherous at times. Given that it's not IF you get in a bunker but WHEN, it's probably more important here than most other courses to make sure their maintenance is on par with the rest of the course.

As for the facilities, still the best service I've experienced anywhere in the east valley, and the range, practice area and putting greens are all topnotch. Thanks to JohnnyGK for the great day!

Course was in great condition considering the time of year. Staff was helpful and let us start on the back nine to avoid a tournament which had started on the front. Turned a five hour round into a 3.5 hour round. Fair course with wide fairways but 109 bunkers of which I found several. My only complaint were the flies. Who decided to put a nice course right next to stockyards? Take bug spray if you are going to play in the summer months.

Played Tue, 5/8/12 9am. They just started summer mode and severely cut back on staff. But other than not having drink carts, did not notice any fall off in service. Heard many good thing about this course from others so finally go to play. However, no one told us about the prevalent flies. You must bring insect repellent to apply before your round unless you are playing in cold weather. We were constantly attacked by flies on every shot which made focusing on golf extremely difficult.
I've never played a course with so many bunkers and wasteland. However, I truly did like the layout and wished that I could have kept my focus to give it my best shot. Unfortunately got defeated by the flies and just wanted to finish the round. Would like to try again in Dec or Jan.

Beautiful and challenging. Very few bare spots on fairways, mainly on #2. Greens were a bit slower than the practice green but they rolled true will little grain affecting them and they held all irons coming in. They only downfall were the greenside bunkers, which I found twice. They looked fine until I climbed into them and realized they were light in the sand department. If you play here bring a wedge with little or no bounce. This course was well worth the drive and I would highly recomend.

Bring your wind game! Played here 5 times and all of them have been with winds 10 to 20 mph actually played twice with wind advisory's (tough day) the 10 to 20 is expected but should not hinder the experience of a wonderful challenging course. Lots of sand over 100 bunkers and for the most part kept in decent shape, greens firm and true. The fairways are the usual Troon good condition and the service is top notch. Stay in the fairway because you will be penelized if your ball finds the desert usually the bushes with little chance of recovery. Southern Dunes is a hidden gem south of the valley and worth the extra drive.

I played Southern Dunes late Feb and was impressed by the condition of the course. The staff are very welcoming. Bring golf balls and your game, this is not a feel good course. There are many challenges, from off the tee to approaches. Study the yardage books and pick your lines or you will have a long day. I will go back even though it is a jaunt from n Scottsdale.

First time playing this course, had heard a lot about it so thought we would give it a go. Got a rate thru Troon golf of $69 + tax. there was a 45 minute frost delay so our 1000 tee time was about 1045, although we did finish in under 4 hours. I am not sure if qcupps was joking in the previous review, but playing from the Tips (as the tees are called) is 7517 yards !! We didn't play from the tips....we found the course in excellent shape, they request that you drive carts on the "green stuff" (fairway) not the "brown stuff" (rough), odd I thought but one can see why, as the rough is quite fragile, it's wonderful to play from though! The greens are firm, in fact we thought at first they may still be surface frozen from the hard frost, and I think some were early in the round. I think they turned the sprinklers on to get rid of the frost as well. Any way, the firm greens would accept and hold a shot, however we found that short chips would run and not check. Our group found the greens to be very hard to read some subtle breaks, or breaks that were opposite of what we saw. The real story of this course however are the bunkers, there seem to be hundreds of them, they're everywhere, big ones, small ones, pot bunkers, waste bunkers, green side and fairway bunkers!!! They are in excellent condition so with any sort of a sand game you can play out of them with relative ease. On the front 9 I think I was in 7 bunkers, maybe I smartened up on the back, as I only was in one. The map provided helps quite a bit for the first time player, gives some indication of distances, and where to place the ball, as ball placement is important. Many/most of the sprinkler heads are marked to the center of the green, there are lots. When we got to the 17th hole, we really had to look for the green, it is not visible from the tee, which I found odd. We finally saw the flag over some native grasses and knolls! For the most part the fairways are wide, however some of the landing areas are fairly narrow. Troon managed course so customer service is very good to excellent. All of the staff we came across were friendly, helpful and professional. It's only about a 45 minute drive from N. Scottsdale in off peak time. If the rate is right I'd certainly play it again.

Unbelievable. Who knew that such a gem existed in the middle of nowhere. I played about a month ago and it was in great condition for the end of the summer. The greens were a little bumpy, but still rolled well. Very challenging, but fair. Like no other course I have played in Arizona. I recommend playing from the tips.
