I played Sierra Star while vacationing in Mammoth Lakes on July 25, 2008. This course runs through the middle of town, between several condo complexes but you hardly notice because of the big trees and beautiful scenery. The course was pristine. Tee to green there was no bare ground, sand was soft and light, rough was 2" and perfect. Greens were firm and fast, especially when putting away from the mountain. It does play short, but there are many blind shots, tight fairways, water hazards, and some tricky greens. Course knowledge is key to scoring well. The proshop gave me a tip sheet and I purchased the yardage book. However, it did not help me all that much, partly because the elevation causes your iron shots to fly much further than you expect, but mainly I'm just not that good yet. Right now they have a special: 5 holes at 5:00 for $25. Only problem is that is just a tease; you will not want to stop. Hit your irons off the tee, you will need to keep it in play!
