My wife took me to Pebble for my 40th birthday and my three best friends surprised me by showing up on the first tee. We played on Sunday (6.21). Spyglass was beautiful. Great layout. We used a forecaddie (Brennan) and he was pretty useful about the layout and reading greens.

My only complaint was the hard, wet sand. it cost me a few strokes because you couldn't blast out of it.

I highly recommend the course to anyone who is looking for a challenge. The numerous deer that walk around are a nice little side benefit. They literally will walk right by you as you play your shots.

The course was in excellent condition. The customer service was topnotch. When I went to the proshop two days later to pick up a hat, the gentleman behind the counter remembered me by name the second I walked in. It was certainly expensive, but it lived up to my expectations.

And God said, let there be light...I mean, Spyglass Hill. Played last Monday and words cannot describe the first 5 holes. A lot of the ice plant has been removed from the last several times I played here on holes 1-5, esp. around the 4th hourglass green. However, still plays tough and brutal. Fairways were tight, some of the tee boxes were punched, and a few of the greens were lightly verti-cut, but all in all, the condition was top-notch. The check in, staff, cart guy, starter and everyone was really nice and pleasant. Pins were brutal. Was told they set them easy on the weekend then toughen them up during the week for the locals. Got the NCGA rate and then cruised over to Pebble Beach for our afternoon round after being told in the pro shop at Spy that we could do a replay at Pebble for $250 when we're done. . Pebble was good, very, very good. Finished with the sun going down and it really doesn't get any better than that for public golf here in Callifornia. For $435, to play Spyglass and Pebble is really a treat. With all the deals going on up there right now, it's hard pay good money when you can play Pebble, Spanish, Spyglass, Poppy, and Pasatiempo for dirt cheap. Now is the time to play!!

I checked it off the list...but that's about all I can say. It's a once in a lifetime course that I can say I played. There are much better courses out there for less than half the price. The customer service is great from the employee stand point. But the price of anything to eat or drink, or anything in the pro shop is so over priced it's a joke. This course does have some magnificent views and great holes, but it is a very grueling round. The course demands every shot not to be good, but perfect. Good shots are not rewarded on this course but punished. I got some great pictures, but I will never go back unless it is on someone else's dime.

Played Spyglass today on a reduced rate special ($185) and I'll add my vote to every reviewer who has said it's worth the experience...it's all that and a whole lot more. This is golf in one of best venues in the world...the course is absolutely immaculate, from tee to green. Was a little windy today (but not as much as yesterday, so I was told) and the wind penetrated into the Del Monte forest even after you teed off #5 away from the ocean and played some havock with the tee shots at #12 & #15...two beautiful par 3's. The service? Impeccable, as one might expect from a course of this caliber and cost. The special I played on came from Pebble Beach resorts themselves and Pebble is on the calendar for tomorrow...also at a reduced rate that includes the cart...guess the economy is impacting even these places. Anyway, this course would no doubt get my highest rating and endorsement to play so if you can possibly find a way to play it, even only once in your life, you should...you won't be disappointed. It's not an easy course...some long par 4's...the green on #4 is something to see...has to win honors for one of the narrowest greens in the world. If you want to challenge your game, this is a course that can do that for you.

If you compare the strengths of all 18 holes of both courses, I think Spyglass is a little stronger than Pebble.

I can't necessarily explain why I think so, because on the surface Pebble is next to the cove and is really beautiful (holes 7- 10, 17 & 18), while Spyglass is mostly in the trees.

First time here ... words do not describe this golf course. In fact, I hesitate to call it a 'golf course' the beauty is simply spectacular. I cannot add anything to what the previous posts have mentioned, only this: if you can afford it you MUST play Spyglass Hill before you leave this earth.

What a magnificent course! I questioned whether any course could be worth $300+ for a round. The answer is an emphatic YES! This is the best course I have ever played. I was a little intimidated before playing, after reading the Spyglass website about how narrow the fairways were, how troublesome the rough was, etc . . So I had a case of serious nerves going into the round. Those nerves were quickly put to rest. We were paired up with two guys from SoCal and their caddy Dave. The landing areas are plenty wide, it is the approaches to the greens that can get you into trouble here. RTJ uses the environment nature provided, view, ocean, canyons, and trees to give you a stern test. The greens were faster than any I had ever putted, but they rolled true and smooth. The course makes you think, but it rewards good shots, and penalizes (sometimes severely) poor shots. That's in my mind, what a remarkable course should do. From the moment we pulled up, to the deer on the driving range, the final putt on 18, until we pulled out of the parking lot, this could not have been a more enjoyable round of golf. It was about 4.5 hours of drama, excitement, laughter, and tears that it seemed to end too soon. Would I play this course again? . . In a heartbeat!!!!
