Played last weekend and as most courses in the Northern California area this year, the fairways are firm and tight. This is mainly due to the lack of rain and is not typical for this time of year. All in all the course was in decent shape. Greens were nice and runnning at a medium pace. Bunkers had plenty of sand although it's a little heavy. If you haven't played the course it's pretty flat and winds through mature oaks and pines - lots of them!! Keep it between the trees and you're fine here. If not expect to be hitting punch shots. As mentioned in other reviews there is a lot of wildlife and the surroundings are quite pleasant. The signature hole has to be #16. It's along par 4 with a huge oak right in the middle of the fairway, which makes for a tight drivingt window. Good luck making par on this hole. Let me give you one piece of advice. If you have food in your cart, guard it with your life. Squirles and birds are very used to humans and have no qualms about stealing your stuff. Last week my zipper was open (on my golf bag) exposing a bag of sunflower seeds. Standing on the 11 green I noticed a squirl going to town. I've seen them grab Rees's, muffins, you name it. One time (on the 10th tee box) a squirl grabbed my buddies lighter and ran up the tree with it. He eventualy dropped it. It's a good track with plenty of challenges in a pleasant setting. Conditions have been better, but it's definetly a fun round.

Played Monday 2/27, called in the AM to get a 10:30 tee time for 2; beautiful sunny 50 degree day with a bit of a breeze. The pro shop and starter were very nice. teed off on time, 3:45 round riding; pace very nice in front of me; i know it got busier after me, as i completely lost the foursome behind me and saw an hour worth of foursomes behind them.

Course in good shape. Greens are fast and smooth; tee boxes and fairways are in typical muni shape; alot of unfilled divots and growth is spotty due to them being unfilled. Bunkers are really nice.

There are a ton of geese, a few turkeys, and some other fowl; as a result, there is tons of goose dropping all over the course. If you can't handle goose droppings, this course is not for you. As for the course itself: the layout is very interesting; a tree lined classic course with some slight and not so slight elevation changes, as well as strategic placing of some very big trees. The greens are not easy, as they are very undulating, with a mixture of small and big greens.

A very interesting course; have to keep it out of the trees and putt well.

Nice course, in a nice section of town. Very peacful and quiet; lots of wildlife from the nearby American River frequent the course; you'll see ducks, geese, squirrels, deer and the occasional bobcat as you walk along. It's either the 16th or 17th tee, that has a big oak tree, smack dab in the middle of the fairway; makes for a challenging first couple of shots. The refreshment cart and clubhouse are always staffed with gorgeous young ladies, but somehow this place maintains a fairly wholesome, family-oriented atmosphere. Overall, a great experience, especially if you can schedule a twilight round.

I played this course on Sunday June 27, 2010. The course is challenging with some very tight fairways lined with redwood trees. It has just enough bunkers to make you place your approach shots, and the greens are fairly fast. Lots of trees, but they cut the grass under them short enough so you can make shots. The course was in great shape even on a 100 degree day. The staff was very courteous and I teed off right on time. I had a great time and Ancil Hoffman was well worth the green fee.

Played mid-morning Jun 15. I've had the privilege of playing a lot of great courses, but this one definitely makes my Top 10. Today, the conditions were absolutely perfect. Greens ran about 10, and every aspect of the course was well-tended. But what I really like about this course is how management pays attention to the details. For example, the Starter was on the ball, there is a sign on the 1st tee box spelling out the day's course condition, the beverage cart was everywhere, the marshal was firm but friendly, and when you leave the course in your car, there is a sign that thanks you for coming. The wildlife there is pretty incredible too. The course is located inside a park, so you'll see geese, wild turkeys, and people taking their horses out for ride. But the very best thing about this course is the design. It is pure genius. I really think this is one of the best Billy Bell designs out there. You will play every club in your bag and you'll be thinking off every tee box. Billy brought his A game to this design. Elevated greens, doglegs, sloping terrain, small greens, blind approaches, deep faced bunkers, false fronts. It's a great and subtle ride that Billy takes you on. If the conditioning today is the norm, then Sac golfers should really thank the golf gods for this course. One of Billy Bell's best efforts.

Played Ancil Hoffmand for the first time today and really enjoyed it. Will play it better the next time around as there are some nuances you can store in your memory bank for the next time. Beautiful day, 4.5 hour round. There are some doglegs but most holes are straight. Trees line each side of virtually every fairway so bring your straight game with you. Greens were slick and with the exception of the uphill par three; all other threes are long (from blues). Price was fair ($30 with cart on golfnow); teed off at 11.15am. Entertainment book has a buy one get one free offer. Play this course if you like your holes long and strsight.

This course certainly isn't my favorite, but at the same time is a good course for the money. I found the layout, with the exceptions of some very neat Par 3s, to be rather dull. Tons of established trees, which is both a good and bad thing, serve as the only hazards on the course.

However, the prices are very affordable especially if you use golfnow. Otherwise, customer service is decent but the marshals are a group of rude and uninformed wal-mart style workers.

Played this course several times in the past and have always enjoyed the experience. Went for a quicky back 9 this morning and liked the conditions and it seemed freshly mowed. The par 3 #14 elevated green requires the right distance on your stoke because there is no visual of the green from tee. The fairway tree on #16 requires an accurate drive, I hit this tree more than the fairway from the tee box. Very good experience and environment.
