Played sun 9/13, 1pm tee time scramble, 4:45 round. course in surprisingly good shape, considering drought conditions. Fairways all maintained, hard, and playable. rough cut down low throughout. greens soft, but not slow.. maybe a slow 10. Not a spot of bad conditions through the course. Very good time of golf. Looks like they are punching though, but also looks like cooler weather with tiny chance of rain... so should bounce back.

This is definitely one of my favorite courses in Sacramento. My best ever score there was 89, but typically I'd be in the low to mid 90's. Course is easier than many due to less rough, and fewer sand traps. This course is in far better shape than its sister course, Bing Maloney. The only downside of Bartley Cavanaugh is that there is no driving range at Bartley Cavanaugh, but that is easily overcome because there IS a driving range at the sister course, Bing Maloney, just 3 miles up the road. Most unique hole at Bartley is their 70-yard island hole... water on all sides, meaning that you'll need to drop your ball at about 60 yards, and let it roll.

Just played it today; it's in pretty rough shape during the last week of September! I generally like this course, because while it's pretty flat, it has some mentally challenging fairways and water features. Like the #2 tee, a fairly skinny fairway, which lies just right of the 5 freeway. Shank far enough to the left, and you may kill someone. Or the #4 tee, which borders a fenced open field. I want to climb over that fence with a shopping cart, and stock up with a lifetime supply of balls. Or my favorite, #17. It's 86 yards from the blue box, but surrounded by a lake on 3 sides. Today, with my pitching wedge, I sailed over the entire island (okay, it's actually a peninsula), and landed on a steep decline just short of the water. I needed 3 strokes to get to the green; I kept falling short or going long into the water. I'll be having nightmares about it until I play there again. Like I said, today the course was in pretty bad shape; saturated and muddy in many, many spots. Which is interesting, considering the extreme heat we've had the last couple weeks.

Played monday 3/21, twilight teed off at 2:45, played 10 holes (1-4 and 13-18) in 2 hrs by myself. Been raining the last 7 days, and hadn't rained in the last 24-36 hours. cart path only, so i walked. Course drained pretty good... there were some soggy areas in the fairway, but just spots. Most of the rough was at least 50% dry. There were a few new lakes in some lowlying areas, but mostly out of play (if you hit it straight). Green slow, due to rain. Overall, decent draining course. Wet areas did not affect me too badly. Course is generally linksy with big greens, can get windy. short and wideopen. main defense is the big greens and some lakes in play on 4 or 5 holes.

A number of the tee boxes need work though, but for the price, this facility is a fun place to play a nice, casual round.

Played twilight on Oct 17. I had a fun time playing this course; the weekday twilight fee was $19 to walk. For $19, the course was well worth the price. The layout was somewhat interesting; basically, the designer was given a very flat piece of land and had to do something with it. The result is a lot of artificial mounding. Nevertheless, the routing was fun, and the greens rolled smoothly. Even from the tips, the course is very short. I think I used driver maybe twice. The course conditions were B-. There were a lot of dry patches, and the fairways and bunkers were below average - but that's to be expected for a muni that is economically accessible to all players. The vibe here is very laid back and friendly. If you want to work on your irons, this is a fun place to do that. Lots of doglegs, water, and course management for your iron game.

Nice short course. You can reach all par 4's with a short iron, if you can drive the ball long, you can reach some greens off the tees.

Greens are very lush, no bare spots, BUT, they are very, very slow.

Played sunday 9/16, walked on as a single 6:45 am, got out right away. ended up being second one out, passed the 2some in front of me, ran into the back 9 people on #14. 3hr round. course in decent shape. greens are not very fast, but true. fog rolled in about 8:30, from the lakes on the course. lasted about 45 minutes. they put in a hitting cage recently.
